Dispersed Camping CR 48

Off County Road 48 in the San Isabel National Forest, this dispersed camping area sits roughly four miles from camp sites outside Leadville. The access road features bumps and rocks, though campers report SUVs and vans handle it fine. Multiple pull-offs line the left side of the road, with the first area offering two large sites equipped with stone fire rings positioned close together.

Sites farther down the road provide better mountain views, according to reviewers, though the first pull-off remains popular for its easier access. The farthest camping spots require about a 2.5-mile round-trip walk to reach Turquoise Lake. Tyler A. notes "there are tons of hummingbirds" in the area and mentions the Bodfish Trail toward Molly Brown Campground as a nearby hiking option.

Expect company during busy periods, as this free camping draws steady traffic from RVs of all sizes to smaller rigs. Verizon provides two bars of cell service, and the area allows both pets and alcohol. Some sites show signs of heavy use, with scattered trash reported in certain spots. Temperatures drop significantly at night even in late summer, making this location suitable for those prepared for mountain conditions.

This dispersed camping area offers numerous sites with mountain views near Turquoise Lake but faces significant challenges. Crowding and lack of privacy are common complaints, while site conditions vary widely from beautiful spots to areas with trash and debris.

Right off the road

This is the first area when you turn left at the road. The Google maps takes you to a green gate on the right but this is actually the little road to the left. It opens up and there are two big spots with stone fire rings pretty close to each other. Dont expect privacy. Some decent views from one of the spots. No bathrooms and 2 bars verizon signal if you keep going down the road yoy will get to more dispersed camping areas. The road is a little bumpy with rocks but any suv or van ia fine

Beautiful views but busy

Spectacular scenery!!

It was 100+ at home in Denver and 77 degrees at the site.

Relatively easy to find a spot because you can camp pretty much anywhere. You do have to know going in that you’ll be sharing it with lots of folks and most likely a bunch of 4 wheelers.

There’s a few really neat hikes too. One in particular is the Bodfish Trail over toward Molly Brown CG.

Also, there are tons of hummingbirds.

We’ll come back.

Way too busy

While there are tons of spaces where one could camp out here, most spaces are taken. While there were a few spots where I could technically post up, there’d have been no privacy. Certainly, it looks like there are a few spots where one might maximize privacy, but folks look pretty settled in those spots.

Beautiful free camping near Turquoise Lake

There are three camping pull offs on the left of CR 48. The first of which is where camped. We later walked down the road toward Turqouise Lake and realized there were more spots, the furthest having the best mountain views. The roads to the dispersed camping spots was a bit bumpy but we saw rigs of all types and sizes here so it's definitely do able. About a 2.5 mile round trip walk/hike to turqouise lake from the farthest campground (the 1st pull off). This place was pretty busy but people kept their distance. We were there in late August and temps got cold at night. But it's a beautiful and quiet spot in the woods.
