Middle Mountain

Tall pines surround this Forest Service campground on Vallecito Reservoir, where most sites sit within walking distance of the lake. The open terrain allows big rigs to navigate the grounds, though Doug W. notes "most sites are best for small rigs" and finding level spots requires some maneuvering. Sites feature fire rings and picnic tables, with vault toilets and water stations distributed throughout the campground.

The reservoir provides direct access for paddleboarding and kayaking, with some sites positioned right on the water. Summer months bring crowds, particularly on weekends, though early fall sees significantly fewer visitors. Camp hosts maintain the facilities consistently, with multiple reviewers highlighting the cleanliness of restrooms and overall grounds. Cell service reaches two bars for Verizon users, making it workable for those needing connectivity.

The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted, enforcing a 14-day stay limit during the May through September season. Nearby hiking trails provide additional recreation opportunities beyond water activities. For those preferring hookups, Pine Point Campground offers a different setup just over half a mile south.

Many campers appreciated the shaded lakeside sites and consistently clean facilities maintained by a helpful host. Several reviews noted it's first-come, first-served with no hookups but good access to water activities. Most found it ideal for smaller rigs and summer recreation.

Nice spot with good views of lake

This campground is busy in summer, it was almost empty in early September. Most sites are best for small rigs, we did find a sort of level spot for our small 5th wheel.

We scored a site right on the lake and with a bit of wiggling we got it level. We had 2 bars of Verizon so internet was decent.

There is plenty of good hiking nearby.

Some of the best views of the lake

We stopped by and spoke with the camp host and took a tour of the campground. Was told that this campground is 1st come 1st available spots, no reservations taken. We had also visited the other near by campgrounds managed by the forest service and felt this campground had the nicest views of the lake was Middle Mountain campground and next time up this way would definitely try and stay here. Almost all the spots and no services but did see location to get fresh water and saw a couple of restrooms. Tall pines all abound. 14 day limit.

Middle mountain magic

One of our favorites, it's an easy drive and quite lovely all summer. It can get crowded so plan accordingly. We did not have easy water access but it can be done down a relatively steep but quick jaunt down the hill to the beach.

One of our favorites!

Our campsite was very close to the beach and the lake was ideal for paddleboardIng. Out site had a fire ring and a picnic table, it was surrounded by trees and allowed us to hang our hammocks to sleep, the bathroom was a few steps away and was very clean. There is a store a few miles away in case you need to buy some last minute things. The host was very nice and kept the place nice and neat.

Beautiful lakside camping

This campground is our #1 spot. Walking distance to the lake for kayaking, paddleboarding, etc. The camp sites are mostly shady. There's no hookups but there's water stations and vault toilets. The camp host is wonderful as well!
