Traffic noise from Highway 24 provides a constant backdrop at this roadside campground, where large sites accommodate RVs up to 30 feet among scattered aspen groves. The US Forest Service maintains clean vault toilets and provides bear boxes at each site, though reviewers consistently note the steady stream of vehicles passing just yards away.
Sites spread across relatively flat terrain, with some positioned deeper into the aspens for modest screening from the road. "Good size sites" and fire pits anchor each spot, while a communal bear-proof trash receptacle serves the small campground. One reviewer found places to camp around Red Cliff when primitive options filled by early afternoon during summer peak season.
Access to nearby creek requires bushwhacking through vegetation, though the effort rewards campers with water access. The campground sits roughly halfway between Minturn and Leadville, making it a practical overnight stop for travelers on Highway 24. At $19 per night, the first-come, first-served sites sometimes remain available even during busy holiday weekends.
"For a night outside it was great! just be aware that it's bear country," notes one camper who appreciated the sunset views toward surrounding cliffs. The combination of road access and bear safety measures suits RV travelers needing a convenient base camp, though light sleepers may struggle with truck traffic throughout the night.
Description
**Bear activity has been increasing. For this reason a food storage order is in effect at all developed campgrounds on the Eagle/Holy Cross Ranger District, and the Piney Guard Station, Tigiwon Lodge, Mount of the Holy Cross Overlook, Homestake Road FSR 703, and Nolan Creek Road. This order requires all food and refuse to be stored in hard-sided vehicles, approved bear-resistant containers, or supended at least 10 feet clear of the ground at all points and four feet horizontally from any supporting tree or pole. This order has been issued to provide for public safety and wildlife conservation. Hopefully it will reduce wildlife habituation problems. ** The Hornsilver Campground is located right off Highway 24 about 10 miles south of the town of Minturn, CO. It is directly across Hwy 24 from the Homestake Creek, which offers fishing opportunities. There are several trailheads off Homestake Road #703, which is about 1 mile south of the campground on Hwy.24. There is a printable Recreation Quicksheet for this campground which is complete with directions, details, and other information about this campground.
