Within Rio Grande National Forest, Highway Springs Campground provides a riverside setting along State Highway 160 just outside South Fork. This Forest Service facility operates Memorial Day through Labor Day and accommodates RVs up to 35 feet with standard amenities including fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets.
The campground features approximately a dozen sites arranged in two loops, with the lower loop positioned closer to the river. Sites include bear-proof food lockers and allow pets. Despite highway proximity, the sound of flowing water helps mask traffic noise. The high elevation location brings cool summer temperatures and potential for early fall frost, even in September. Campers seeking pet-friendly options near Rio Grande National Forest will find this a convenient base for forest exploration.
