Accessible only by foot from a gravel parking area, this dispersed camping spot requires a short walk to reach tent sites along the Smith River. The Forest Service maintains a pit toilet in the parking lot, though campers must carry their gear roughly 100 yards down a path to the actual camping areas.
Multiple sites spread along the forest road provide options for different group sizes. Braxton C. notes "probably five different spots along the forest road up the river to choose from." The Smith River runs clear alongside the camping areas, offering direct water access for those who make the walk down from the parking lot. Most visitors report finding the area quiet despite its location near a road, as traffic remains minimal in this remote section of forest.
The pit toilet stays relatively clean according to multiple reviews, and the parking area accommodates various vehicle sizes including larger vans. Signs prohibit overnight parking in the lot itself, requiring all campers to use the designated walk-in sites. Other camping near Six Rivers National Forest includes developed campgrounds like Big Flat Campground for those preferring drive-up access.
Pack light since you'll carry everything to your site, and bring a headlamp for navigating the path after dark.
