Gaviota Campground — Gaviota State Park

Wind and waves define the camping experience at Gaviota Campground, where the Pacific Ocean sits less than a five-minute walk from most sites. This state park campground operates more like a paved parking lot with designated spaces than a traditional wooded retreat, accommodating RVs up to 24 feet alongside tent campers in an open, largely treeless setting.

The constant coastal breeze creates dusty conditions throughout the campground, particularly in the central dirt area where many activities take place. Ariya B. notes the facilities are "always pretty clean and there are fire pits," while multiple campers mention the intensity of the wind requires preparation with extra stakes and shade structures. Train traffic on the trestle above adds periodic noise to the ocean sounds.

Direct beach access leads to a sandy shoreline with a fishing pier and small general store on-site. The beach extends in both directions, offering spots away from the main camping area for those seeking solitude. Hill hiking trails provide elevated views of the coastline, though several reviewers rate the beach walk as the primary draw. Campfires are permitted in designated fire rings, and standard restroom and shower facilities serve the campground.

The $45 nightly rate requires reservations during peak periods, and sites fill quickly due to the limited number available. Verizon cell service reaches the campground despite its somewhat remote coastal location. Full sun exposure means shade structures are essential during warmer months, and the wind can make setup challenging for larger tents or awnings.

For those wanting more sheltered camping with tree cover, Arroyo Hondo Vista Point Rest / Camp area provides an alternative five miles east with different terrain and wind patterns.

Many campers appreciated the direct beach access and pier, though several noted the parking lot-like layout with minimal shade. Recurring comments addressed strong winds and train noise, while facilities received consistent praise.

Favorite spot

This campsite has been my favorite place to go camping ever since I was a little girl. I love that the campsite is right next to the beach, less than 5 minute walk. There is a pier and a gift shop and when walking along the beach you can find some cool little spots to chill at away from all other campers and beach goers. Always pretty clean and there are fire pits. This was always my favorite camping spot and still is to this day.

Ok campsite

We stopped here at random and got the last spot. It is more or less a parking lot campsite with a dirt lot in the center. It was very windy and dusty. A plus is you were able to walk down to the ocean. Probably wouldn’t stop here again unless we needed to.

Quaint, and easy to get to.

Gaviotas is one of the smaller camp grounds in the area. It has facilities and a small general store. The spaces are small and the parking lot is paved. The beach is right there and has lots of sand. You have to not mind trains if you want to stay here, as there is a train trestle above the camp grounds. Great for a couple days on the way to another destination. It gets WINDY too.

Couldn't even stay here.

We drove by looking for a campsite close to the beach. It is close, and there is mountains to look at. It is a field with a parking lot that you can pitch a tent or park your rv. It's also expensive. There is no shade, there is nothing appealing about it. Right off the highway as well.

one night stay

We stayed here in a campervan while driving Hwy 1. It is a nice enough camping area, but I wouldn't say you are 'camping in nature' as much as camping around a parking lot. The facilities were good. There was a neat pier and ocean access. I would stay here again.

What are visitors saying in reviews about Gaviota State Park Beach & Campground?

Gaviota State Park Campground offers a unique coastal camping experience with direct beach access that many campers appreciate. The location features a pier and beautiful ocean access that draws visitors. While the campground itself is described as more of a parking lot style setup with limited shade and trees, the stunning sunsets and peaceful beach atmosphere are frequently highlighted as standout features.
