Sugar Pine Point Campground

Tucked within the pine forests of Eldorado National Forest, Sugar Pine Point Campground operates from May through November with multiple access options including drive-in, boat-in, and walk-in sites. The US Forest Service facility sits among large pines that provide natural shade and hammock-hanging opportunities, with spacious sites that don't crowd neighboring campers.

The campground maintains clean restrooms with running water and offers amenities like a dump station, firewood sales, and trash service. Bear activity requires proper food storage in the provided bear boxes at each site, with fines issued for violations. Several reviewers spotted bears near their campsites during visits. A creek runs behind the camping area, adding natural sound to the forested setting.

Lake Tahoe access sits within walking distance or a short drive from the sites. Families find the location convenient for biking and hiking trails that branch out from the campground. "Really nice campground for families - bike trails, hiking trails, and access to the lake," notes David N.. Nearby Tahoma Market provides last-minute supplies and ice. The facility accommodates big rigs and allows alcohol, though pets are prohibited.

Winter operations remain limited, with only select sites open and snow covering most camping areas through March.

Campers consistently praised the spacious, well-arranged sites among tall pines and clean facilities with helpful staff. The family-friendly location offers easy lake access and trail systems, though some noted noise can carry between sites.

Cute Campground near creek

Loved the big beautiful trees. Enjoyed the creek behind. Lovely campground. Nice, clean facilities. Has bear lockers, pinicic tables and fire rings.

A rare winter camping option in Tahoe.

Most campgrounds close over the winter in Tahoe but we were delighted to stumble across Sugar Pine Point in mid March when there is still a good bit of snow around. Only a handful of sites are open, but the bathrooms are open and there is running water at the sites. We were in a rootfop tent so it didn't impact us, but the sites themselves are generally covered in snow. Only a handful of campers were braving the cold/snow. There was a good bit of snow overnight, but they were really on the ball plowing first thing in the morning.

Well-spaced shady campsite

Pros: If you’re tired of fighting crowds around Lake Tahoe in peak season, head to the north west side of the lake to Sugar Pine where you’ll find lots of open sites amongst shady pines. Location is great and close to some of the less crowded beaches and is surrounded by easy trails. With so many large pines, you’ll have lots of options for hanging your hammock. Not too crowded and sites are spacious. Bathrooms are clean.

Con: Noise carried easily and heard lots of campers

Tips: Saw 2 bears, so appropriate food storage is a must (and you’ll get fined). Bring single (one) dollar bills for the showers.

Absolutely stunning

There were 20 of us on a camping trip and this group site was amazing. We were all able to claim tent space and have extra places to hang out or cook meals. The bear bins were located great and even got to see a couple of them by our tents. The location of the campground is great and just a short drive or walk to Lake Tahoe. Over all best sleep on a picnic table I've had (it's a preference to tents)!

Great for families!

Really nice campground for families - bike trails, hiking trails, and access to the lake! Nearby showers are nice, too! Campground is near Tahoma Market if you need ice or last minute goodies.

Peaceful piney heaven

Went with a group from a local environmental organization. It is nestled in a lovely area of tall pines, the sites are arranged nicely and is a part of a very nice state park.
