Miranda Pine Campground

Three sites perched at 3,800 feet elevation make Miranda Pine Campground a mountaintop destination for campers willing to tackle the challenging access road. The 10-mile dirt route up Sierra Madre Road requires high clearance vehicles, with the final stretch to the ridgetop particularly rough and rocky. Reviewers consistently note that passenger cars should avoid this route entirely.

Each site includes a picnic table and offers expansive views stretching to the Pacific Ocean on clear days. The campground takes its name from a large pine tree at the summit. Wind exposure proves significant at this elevation, with multiple visitors reporting strong gusts that can make cooking and relaxing difficult, particularly during spring months. A pit toilet serves the three sites, though cell service remains spotty throughout the area.

The remote location means campers often have the entire campground to themselves, especially on weekday visits. Antonio C. found that "all sites are great and offer great views" during his July visit. The elevation and exposure create ideal conditions for stargazing when winds calm down.

Campers seeking lower elevation alternatives with easier access can explore Old Sierra Madre along the same road system.

Many campers appreciated the stunning mountaintop views and well-maintained sites at this free campground. Several guests reported strong winds due to the exposed location, and the 10-mile dirt road requires high-clearance vehicles.

Beautiful views, windy af

I drive up on Old Sierra Madre Road from hwy 166, and it took about an hour. The road gets increasingly rocky/washed out, with the top of the ridge the roughest going but I made it fine in a high clearance 2wd. Went on a Saturday night in the spring, and it was incredibly windy all day/night. Like... too windy to cook, hang out, relax. Probably picked the worst time of year for wind but the green hillsides were beautiful.

Great campground

You don’t need a 4wd for the whole length of Sierra Madre rd. but would highly recommend it and would not recommend a passenger car. The dirt road to get to camp is about 10 miles. The road is bumpy but In good condition overall, we made it on a stock height 2wd truck. We arrived on Saturday 4th of July and all the sites were taken so we decided to drive another 15 miles up the road to a nice shaded location just right off the road. Didn’t see anybody the whole night. The next morning we drove up even more to McPherson peak where the views are amazing. We drove back down the road back to Miranda pines and everybody had left, we had the whole campground to ourselves. There was a full moon that night that lit up everything beautifully. It did get very windy that night. The campground consist of three sites and does have a pit toilet. All sites are great and offer great views. Cell phone service was on and off so don’t rely on it.

Secluded but difficult to get to campground

Set atop a mountain, Miranda Pine campground gives sweeping views all the way to the ocean. Beware the road is long and unpaved, not suitable for a compact car. I did it with a high clearance 4WD and made it to the top. Only a couple sites at the top, but they are free. Picnic tables at each site. Named for the larged Pine tree at the top of the mountain. Sunset and Sunrise views are incredible. Brought my dogs and they loved it. No real services up here so its especially important to pack out all your trash and follow Leave No Trace ethics.

Top of the world !

So I did not stay at this site but I did stop on my way back into town it's well taken care of and has a 360° view literally at the top of a mountain so that's the good and that also makes it the bad too if winds pickup you will be sandblasted! No cover to break the wind coming from either side of the mountain but one of the better spots in the area for big groups !

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Miranda Pine Campground?

Miranda Pine Campground offers primitive, no-frills camping with limited amenities. Each site features a picnic table for meals and gatherings. The campground is free to use, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious campers. There are no water sources, electricity, or modern restroom facilities available, so you'll need to pack in all necessary supplies including water. The campground's mountaintop location provides spectacular 360-degree views as a natural amenity, but also means you'll be exposed to potential wind with minimal natural shelter.

How do I get to Miranda Pine Campground?

Miranda Pine Campground is accessed via Old Sierra Madre Road, which is a long, unpaved route approximately 10 miles in length. The road becomes increasingly rocky and rough as you approach the campground, with the ridge section being particularly challenging. High-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended, and 4WD is beneficial though not absolutely required in good conditions. The drive from Highway 166 takes about an hour. Passenger cars and compact vehicles are not suitable for this journey due to the rugged terrain.

Are reservations required for Miranda Pine Campground?

No reservations are required for Miranda Pine Campground as it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground is free to use, with no entry or camping fees. Keep in mind there are only a few campsites available at the top of the mountain, so arriving early, especially on weekends or holidays, is advisable to secure a spot. The remote location and challenging access road naturally limit visitation, which can improve your chances of finding an available site.

What activities can I do near Miranda Pine Campground?

Miranda Pine Campground offers exceptional opportunities for scenic photography and stargazing from its mountaintop location with sweeping panoramic views that extend all the way to the ocean on clear days. Hiking along the ridgeline provides stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape. Wildlife observation is popular in this remote setting. The area is also suitable for mountain biking on the surrounding forest roads. For astronomy enthusiasts, the high elevation and distance from city lights create ideal conditions for night sky viewing. Be prepared for potentially windy conditions when planning activities.
