Bloomfield Campground

Within Stanislaus National Forest, Bloomfield Campground operates as a first-come, first-served site along a dirt access road near Ebbets Pass. The US Forest Service manages this drive-in campground at elevation, where sites accommodate RVs up to 25 feet and include fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets.

The campground spreads along a creek that flows through the property. Multiple campers note the constant sound of running water from their sites. Mollie M. observed "deep enough spots to swim on the creek and shallow enough places to cross and explore," though another reviewer found the water too cold for swimming even in summer. Sites sit far enough back from the dirt road to minimize vehicle noise, with spacing that provides privacy between camping areas.

Weather patterns shift quickly at this elevation. Mid-afternoon thunderstorms can develop during summer months, sometimes bringing hail and cooler temperatures. The campground fills on weekends, particularly Friday evenings, but maintains availability on weekdays. Several sites may close temporarily due to fallen trees blocking access.

The rough dirt access road requires careful driving but doesn't demand four-wheel drive. Campers should pack toilet paper as restroom supplies sometimes run low during busy periods. For pet owners exploring pet-friendly camping spots around Stanislaus National Forest, this campground welcomes dogs and provides ample space for walking along the creek corridor.

Campers regularly cited the spacious, private creek-side sites with peaceful atmosphere as major draws. However, multiple reviews noted minimal facilities and rough road access, making it best suited for self-sufficient campers seeking seclusion.

Peaceful

My husband and I stayed here with our 2 dogs, and it was such a peaceful spot.  The drive through Ebbets pass is gorgeous, and this campground is pretty much at the top of the pass.

Our site was right on the river, so we had a gorgeous view and sounds of the river to fall asleep to.  It is not deep enough for swimming, and also very cold, but nice to put your feet in.

Although middle of summer,  we did get caught in some mid-afternoon thunderstorms 2 days in a row.  There was even hail.  It was pretty chilly at night too.

A few campsites were closed off because of a fallen tree.

This is a first come first serve campground, and it did fill up pretty quickly for the weekend.  We got there late morning on a Friday, and were able to get a spot, but it filled up by Friday evening.

Bring TP for the bathroom!!  It ran out on Saturday but I think got replenished at some point during the weekend.

Amazing primitive campsites

Down the dirt road from the maintained Bloomfield campsite you'll find several camping areas that vary in size and distance from the road/other sites. None of the sites that I saw had anything other than a fire ring built from rocks. No bear box, picnic table, or grill, and the toilets are down the road at Bloomfield 1. If you're looking for something secluded without having to backpack in, this spot is perfect.

Quiet and peaceful

The road in turns to dirt and becomes farely rough, but 4wd is not required. The spaces are along the dirt road but most are far enough back to not even notice the road as on the other side of the sites is a beautiful large creek. You can hear the creek all night as you sleep, there were deep enough spots to swim on the creek and shallow enough places to cross and explore. The sites are very spread out and private. We saw several people on our way in but our site was still several sites away from the next person and there were tons of sites available even in the summer. Highland lakes is at the very end of the road but it is a long drive on the rough road, it is beautiful and even more remote.  But we preferred to explore the creek and stay in a spot that was super private and had a great place to sit right on the creek. I would go back.
