Within the Ozark National Forest, Haw Creek Falls Camping operates as a free US Forest Service campground that draws visitors to its creek-side location. The facility sits in a forested setting where Haw Creek flows past campsites, creating natural swimming holes and wading areas that provide relief during hot weather. Most sites include fire rings with views of the nearby waterfall.
This primitive campground features about 10 first-come, first-serve sites spread along a loop road. Vault toilets serve the area, though campers must bring their own drinking water since no potable water sources exist on-site. The sites offer reasonable spacing between neighbors, and the creek provides a constant water soundtrack. Day visitors frequently arrive to use the swimming areas, particularly on weekends, though overnight camping typically remains light except during peak seasons.
Lacee G. notes that campers should "enjoy the nearby trails while you are here," with the Pam's Grotto trailhead located directly across the road from the campground. The trail system connects to other Ozark hiking destinations, and Samantha W. describes the "swimming area is fantastic, a much needed relief after a hot day of hiking."
Access requires careful timing since the creek can flood the entrance road during heavy rain periods, temporarily closing the campground. The road conditions and seasonal flooding make this location best suited for standard vehicles rather than large RVs. Campers should pack out all trash and come prepared for primitive conditions. For additional forest camping, Long Pool Recreation Area provides another option with different amenities about 10 miles southeast.
Cell service remains spotty throughout the area, making this campground appealing for those seeking a digital break alongside creek access and waterfall views.
Description
As of Oct 2021 -
Haw Creek Falls—Located on Hwy 123, this newly designated Point of Interest will be accessible year-round. Removal of the gate across the low-water bridge and suspension of fees will be immediately implemented, and camping will still be allowed in designated campsites. A slow transition of amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern posts will be removed over time as they become unusable or unsafe. Trash services will be managed by the user as “pack it in, pack it out.” Active partner groups and volunteers are helping extend the life of current amenities, excluding trash services. Several volunteer workdays have been hosted at this site in the last several months, which have proven to be immensely beneficial to keeping this primitive area operational. Please note, this area is subject to flash flooding and visitors are responsible for monitoring conditions and taking precautionary measures. Removal of the gate does not indicate the area is always safe during changing weather conditions.
Surrounded by a beautiful mature hardwood forest, this campground is located on a small mountain stream with picturesque falls, rocks, and a bluff. Big Piney Wild and Scenic River are nearby. There is an accessible trail to the Haw Creek Falls. Camping - 9 family units. Camping trailers are allowed but no special facilities are available. Access to the Ozark Highlands Trail. The recreation area is closed following the 3rd week of December and reopens the 3rd week of March. Please note that the campground is closed when heavy rain is forecast.
