Shultz Creek Trailhead Dispersed

This free dispersed camping area sits at a trailhead parking lot approximately 5 miles northwest of Flagstaff, accessible via dirt roads through forested terrain. However, recent regulatory changes have significantly impacted camping availability here.

As of May 2023, dispersed camping is no longer permitted within 20 miles of Flagstaff, effectively eliminating overnight stays at this location. Multiple visitors have reported being informed of this restriction by local authorities after setting up camp. The area now functions primarily as a day-use trailhead rather than an overnight destination.

The site consists of a large, flat gravel parking lot that previously accommodated RVs and tent campers. A clean portable toilet remains available for trail users. Cell service works well in the area, and the location provides access to hiking trails through the surrounding forest. "Dirt parking lot at the trailhead for overnight parking," Spiritwalker S. noted from an earlier visit.

Campers seeking overnight options should consider Fort Valley Dispersed Camping or explore other camping destinations around Flagstaff that remain outside the restricted zone. The trailhead continues to serve day hikers and those accessing the area's trail system.

NO LONGER LEGAL TO CAMP HERE!

So sorry tobbe the bearer of bad news. As of May 2023, dispersed camping is not allowed within 20 miles of Flagstaff. We were not aware of this new regulation and so set up camp at the Schultz TH parking lot. Local police officer filled us in and was very nice about it. Bummer!

You might get away with 1 overnight if you're in a pinch. Parking lot is large, flat and gravel. There is a nice portapotty.

Good for a quickie

Dirt parking lot at the trailhead for overnight parking. Not for long-term camping. Frequented by the locals for the walk.
