Crystal Forest Campground

Visitors to Petrified Forest National Park find overnight camping just outside the south entrance at Crystal Forest Campground, where sites are outlined with sections of ancient petrified wood. This privately-owned facility operates on both sides of Highway 180, offering paid electric sites on one side and free boondocking on the other.

The campground features approximately 10 sites with 30-amp electrical hookups priced at $25 per night, while dry camping remains free for those not needing power. Jim M. notes the "campground is ringed with petrified sections of ancient trees," creating a distinctive border around the camping area. Sites include concrete pads and picnic tables, with pull-through and back-in options available. The facility can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet.

Staff operates an on-site gift shop and museum featuring rock and mineral collections, with the business opening at 8am daily. The location provides direct access for early morning national park visits, eliminating the need for additional driving. Several reviewers mention the sunrise views from camp, though the gift shop lighting can interfere with stargazing unless campers position their rigs strategically.

Road access requires navigating the main highway, and the campground lacks restroom facilities or water hookups. No campfires are permitted at either the paid or free sections. The Crystal Forest Museum and Gifts operates additional free camping across the highway with similar amenities. Cell service remains available throughout the area.

Campers planning extended stays in the region can explore additional camping near Woodruff for variety. The location serves as an efficient base camp for park exploration, particularly for those prioritizing convenience over extensive amenities.

It is a great place to stay

On the east side of the highway heading into the petrified Forest is the free side first come first serve, and it is a pretty good place to stay. We stayed there the first night we was here before we went into the petrified Forest, which is pretty cool. It was pretty hot so the second night we was here we moved over to the paid place. It cost $25 a night for 30 amp hookup $35 a night for 50 amp hookup. The staff is very friendly they have a gift store on both sides of the highway selling mostly rocks and and souvenirs.

Lots of options for hook ups or self sustained

This is a great place and very friendly. Especially if you want to tour the national park. They let you stay for free if you don’t need power. Power is available. And there’s another similar camping spot across the street. It’s right at the entrance of the national park

Sitewe stayed in Site too, but no power so no charge

Close to Petrified Forest

We camped on the north side of the road. I believe there are four campsites that are pull through and maybe five or six campsites back in . $25 per night for electric. Only 30 amp. Sites were nice & level. Mary, the lady who runs the place, was very nice and accommodating. Only about 2 miles from the entrance to the national park.

Quiet stary night

Great overnight stop after a visit through The Petrified Forest. Location awesome. We went to the area through the gate past the sheltered electric camp spots. There were cement pads as well in the fenced area. We positioned our trailer to block the light from the Crystal shop so we could photograph the milky way. Felt very safe.

The Crystal shop opens at 8am. Bought a few affordable crystals, friendly and knowledgable staff. A few photo opps with old cars weighed down with petrified rocks.

Interesting, Easy In and Out

This is a unique experience. The campsites are outlined in petrified wood and the gift shops have fascinating pieces. We had a site with electricity, $27 a night but you can boondock for free; no amenities. It is just outside the south entrance to Petrified Forest National Park.

Cheap, electric only, near NP gate

This is a small campground next to a gift shop. 10 sites, all with 30amp electric and a picnic table. Nothing special, but it is next to the Petrified Forest National Park. The owner just bought the Crystal Forest Museum across the street. Free camping there with a picnic table and nothing else. No fires are allowed in either campground.
