Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Yarnell, AZ

Ghost Town Road BLM Camping and Ghost Town Road Camp provide free dispersed camping options for pet owners near Yarnell, Arizona. Both areas feature primitive sites with no amenities but allow pets throughout the camping areas. The sandy terrain with winding roads creates fairly secluded spots for camping with dogs, though some sites have scattered broken glass that pet owners should watch for. Fire rings are available at both locations, but visitors must bring their own water, as no drinking water is provided. Many campers note good cell service with Verizon showing 2-3 bars in most areas, allowing pet owners to access emergency veterinary information if needed. Coyotes are active in the area, requiring extra vigilance when camping with smaller pets.

North Ranch and White Spar Campground offer more developed options for pet owners seeking amenities while camping with dogs. These established campgrounds provide drinking water, trash service, and toilet facilities, with North Ranch additionally offering electric hookups and shower facilities. The camping terrain consists primarily of gravel lots with relatively close spacing between sites. Both locations have nearby trails suitable for dog walking, though leashes are required throughout the camping areas. Sophie's Flat Trailhead provides an alternative dispersed camping option with vault toilets and direct access to trail systems where dogs can explore the desert landscape. Most camping areas remain accessible year-round, with many sites accommodating both tents and RVs of various sizes.

    North Ranch

    Good for One Night

North Ranch is an Escapees RV park with large gravel lot and closely spaced sites. Full hook up with only 30 amp available. There is also another area for dry camping. This is a good place if just passing through and need to do some laundry and dump and fill and take a nice long shower. The sites are fairly close as most RV parks are, clean flat gravel sites. Nothing special but nothing much to complain about either.

Road noise was constant as was ATV use as many of the campers had them. Covid restrictions in place and a mask is required.

    Amenities:

2 laundry areas with washer dryers for$1.25/each open 24/7

Dog walk and fenced in dog park near the main road

Showers Cactus garden walking area- very beautiful and well care for

    Propane on site

    Recycling bin- mixed recycling accepted

    Garbage dumpster

Dump station(was closed when we were there)

    Exercise room

Back in sites are$23 for escapee members and$28 for non members. Pull through sites are a few dollars more.

Weak Verizon and AT&T with occasional streaming if you don’t mind waiting for buffering.

Old Airstrip Camping & Staging Area

    Cactus Forest!

Free. Wide open space, an abandoned air strip. Really cool cactus variations all around, you can hear coyotes. And there are wild burros in the area you can def hear them and during the week it's likely you will see them! It is popular for ATVs and such, so it can get a bit noisy, and it apparently gets pretty packed over the weekend. But empty during the week. About 30 minutes away from town. Though there are a few paid campsites in the area. Not sure what the stay limit is, probably 14 days. All the cacti so close is a bit hazardous for pets and small children, my dog already got spines in her paws.

    White Tank Mountain Regional Park

    Couple nights while visiting area

We stayed at the Willow Campground for two nights while visiting family and friends in the Surprise area. Hiked the Waterfall and Black Loop Trail for a little exercise as well. Didn’t do any others as our dog had an encounter with a stray cholla ball. This would be the only concern for those traveling with pets. There are quite a few lose even along trails. Other than that the facilities are clean and well kept. Fresh water and showers are available.

    Burro Creek Campground

    Nice Desert Getaway

Located in a canyon next to Burro Creek. The campground is first come first serve with about 30 spots. Multiple clean bathrooms and trash bins through out the camp. Not too far from the creek which you can hear running at night. Be prepared for rocky terrain to get to the creek. Pets allowed. About 12 miles south of the small town Wikieup where we went for dinner one night, but not much to do in town. Overall a nice desert campsite about a mile from the highway.

    Maricopa County Park Lake Pleasant

    Enjoyable time

Camped 5 nights at the desert tortoise campground in my NoBo travel trailer. Semi developed so no hook ups. Bathrooms were clean and the area was well kept. The spot includes a ramada with picnic table. There is also a fire ring pit w/ grill which you’ll need to bring firewood for. I fished off the shoreline which was only a few hundred feet from my spot. The spots are relatively close to each other and tent camping is also allowed. Water is clear and very nice. Wild donkeys from old miners back in the day still roam around. They are very accustomed to humans so won’t hesitate to steal food. Definitely something to watch pets around as well.

    Pioneer RV Resort 55+

Out ran a winter storm and stumbled upon this gem!

Great place for some R&R! While out-running a winter storm in Northern Arizona we headed South. Traveling through the Phoenix area we thought it would be hard to find a GOOD, CLEAN and AFFORDABLE place to stay since it was during the winter holidays. We lucked out when we happened upon this gem. The resort was safe, clean, had great amenities, and the staff were great.

-- AND THEY HAD GREAT PRICES! --

It did seem the pull-thru sites were a bit tight. However, we stayed in one of the standard RV spaces. So, we can't confirm that they actually are tight, it just appeared that way.

We did not have a picnic table at our site. (It does not appear that there are tables at any of the sites.) But there was plenty of room between rigs to park a vehicle -and- set up our own tables and chairs.

There is a shooting range near by. People and pets with issues hearing gun/rifle shots during the day should be aware, you -can- hear the shots being fired. It's not deafening, not loud at all, in our humble opinion. You just know there's shots being fired.

At the time of this review you can save even more money because they provide AAA and Good Sam discounts!

If you're looking for a nice, clean, FRIENDLY, resort with amazing prices, Pioneer RV Resort is the place!

-- WE WILL STAY THERE AGAIN. --

(Our apologies for lack of more pictures, it was pouring rain during our stay. However, we will say that the pictures on their website are indeed representative of the resort, amenities, and cleanliness.)

    Alamo Lake State Park Campground

    Hot and isolated

Alamo state park wasn’t all that bad. Due to the virus and our sons upcoming surgery plus several parks and lake being closed this was the only option. The wild burros are a very neat site and great to watch! The lake unfortunately was experiencing a blue green algae bloom 🤢 Park rangers advised to NOT let pets or small children in the water. And fishing was also a bust due to water conditions. Our trip was the end of May so we did experience 110° during our weekend stay. We used the Choilla camp ground (C12) nice pull through spot with water & 30amp and was big enough to accommodate a second vehicle with our Jetskis.

Over all we were happy with our stay and would recommend / plan to visit again in fall or spring when the temps are cooler

Desert Cypress Mobile Home & RV Park

Great Location at a Friendly Park

Desert Cypress is a combination of RVs and permanent mobile homes. It is situated right in Wickenburg and is only a short walk across a bridge to the historic district. The sites are ample sized and should any sized RV. The staff is very helpful and friendly. There are many activities to be found in the area. With direct access to 100s of miles of trails, many who stay in this park are off-road enthusiasts so you will see many ATV vehicles in the park.

Guide to Yarnell

Dispersed camping near Yarnell offers access to high desert terrain at elevations around 4,800 feet, creating moderate temperature variations between seasons. The sandy desert landscape features rocky outcroppings and native vegetation including saguaro cacti, ocotillo, and creosote bush. Road conditions vary significantly among camping areas, with some requiring high-clearance vehicles after rain events.

What to do

Hiking nearby trails: Ghost Town Road BLM Camping provides direct access to multiple hiking routes through the desert landscape. "We walked a dried river bed and found lots of cool rocks and smooth river glass," mentions Toree M. Many sites connect to unmaintained trails suitable for day hikes.

Wildlife observation: Constellation Park offers opportunities to view native desert wildlife in their natural habitat. "We saw a small herd of deer on my run while visiting," notes one camper. Morning and evening hours typically provide the best wildlife viewing chances.

Rock collecting: FDR 373 Thumb Butte Loop contains interesting geological formations where visitors often search for unique rocks. "Great place to escape from the city and get to cooler Temps. We came early May and stayed at site 14," shares Sam P. The area features various mineral deposits and interesting formations.

What campers like

Expansive desert views: Ghost Town Road Camp delivers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. "Great spot plenty of private areas, pretty clean, amazing sunset, great scenery," explains Tracey R. Most elevated sites provide unobstructed horizon views.

Secluded camping spots: Senator Hwy Dispersed Camp Site offers well-separated camping areas for privacy. "The spots are a nice distance away from each other. The signs for each location state a maximum of 7 days for camping," writes Kat. Many sites include natural screening from vegetation or terrain features.

Accessible natural surroundings: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Yarnell provide direct trail access. "We stayed at dispersed camping spot number 8. Very secluded with a hiking trail right off of it," reports Natalie R. about Thumb Butte Loop. Most pet-friendly sites connect to walking paths suitable for exercising dogs.

What you should know

Road conditions vary: Access to many pet-friendly camping areas near Yarnell requires navigating unpaved roads. "The road is bumpy but you can get through with a car just watch for rocks," advises Harlo F. about Thumb Butte Loop. Road conditions typically worsen after rainfall.

Limited facilities: Most dispersed sites offer minimal amenities. "This area is fairly big. We arrived on a Sunday and there were a good amount of campers around who seemed to have been there for a while," notes Sarah I. about Ghost Town Road BLM. Campers should prepare to be self-sufficient.

Seasonal considerations: Sophie's Flat Trailhead and surrounding areas experience significant temperature fluctuations by season. "It was 60s in the daytime and mid 30s at night. Might need an extra blanket if staying in a tent," reports a visitor about nearby camping in early May. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F.

Tips for camping with families

Choose sites with terrain buffers: Thumb Butte Loop offers family-friendly sites with natural boundaries. "Sites 16 and 17 are laid out to accommodate a very large group and could handle a few trailers," mentions Krista Z. These areas provide space for children to explore safely.

Consider proximity to services: White Spar Campground provides more structured camping with nearby facilities. "Nice sites, 3 of which are first come first serve. We got one of those. Wooded area with drinking water pumps scattered about, trash receptacles, and toilets," reports Nancy L. These amenities can make family camping more comfortable.

Seek out educational opportunities: Several pet-welcoming campgrounds near Yarnell offer historical features. "There are two cemeteries to explore. An old one with gravestones from liked 1902 and the other is more modern but it still has many old graves," explains Ann Marie A. These sites provide educational opportunities for children.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger vehicles: Finding level parking proves crucial for RVs. "This area is hard sand, many winding roads with secluded spots to camp and lots of green in between so quite private," notes a Ghost Town Road camper. RV sites typically require advance scouting.

Service access points: North Ranch provides essential RV services. "We pulled to the propane tank and the woman at the counter stated it was only from 11 till 1130 am," warns Wendy L. Most RVers plan service needs carefully as facilities have limited hours.

Turning radius considerations: Larger RVs require careful route planning. "We drove our Chevy 2500 and a 28' camping trailer. On the way in we came from the north from Iron Springs Rd. That was very tight but if you come from town on Thumb Butte Rd it's a much easier drive in," advises Cody P. Many roads narrow significantly at certain points.
