Forest Service #247 Road Dispersed Camping

Within Kaibab National Forest, Forest Service #247 Road Dispersed Camping provides free camping along a gravel forest road accessible to large RVs. The sites sit just off Highway 89A, making this a convenient base for exploring northern Arizona's high country. Multiple camping spots spread along the first mile of the forest road, with the initial pull-through loop accommodating rigs up to 27 feet without difficulty.

The road surface remains manageable for most vehicles, though conditions can become muddy during wet periods. Kevin S. notes the "space is very open with trees surrounding the area," with established fire rings from previous campers scattered throughout the sites. Cell service works well for most carriers due to proximity to towers near Jacob Lake, and Starlink users report reliable connectivity with occasional reboots.

Wildlife sightings include deer and wild turkeys, particularly during early morning and evening hours. The area experiences significant temperature drops at night, with below-freezing conditions common from late October through early spring. Several nearby forest roads offer additional dispersed camping options, including Forest Service Road #205 Lower Dispersed Camping and FS Road #257 Dispersed Camping.

Check current fire restrictions with North Kaibab Rangers before arrival, as conditions change seasonally.

Guests frequently mentioned spacious, accessible sites suitable for larger RVs with surprisingly good cell service. Several visitors noted the lack of facilities typical of dispersed camping, but many appreciated the quiet setting despite highway proximity.

Perfect Spot

Such a solid boondocking find. It felt really private overall—just the occasional car passing on the nearby off-road maybe once a day, but otherwise super quiet. There were established fire spots already set up (didn’t use them, but nice to have), and the whole area was peaceful and really beautiful. Bonus: Starlink worked great out here, which made it even better. Definitely a spot I’d come back to.

On our way to Zion

Road is rough but drove a 27’ rv just fine, we just went slow. First spot was open but we checked 8 others that were full before we turned around. We heard loud vehicles outside from road but nothing in the rv. Deer and turkeys nearby. No fire due to restrictions.

Spacious Camping Spot

The drive up the mountain to this spot was curvy and about 30 mph so takes about 10 mins. There is a toilet a little pass the road by the trails area about 3 mins from destination. No one was out here so it was quiet with lots of wood and such to make a fire as well as coverage from rain. Since it's in the mountains it gets very cold at night so keep that in mind for camping.

First spot!

Stayed for 3 nights, right in the first spot. I chose this because I have Starlink and needed a view of the sky.

My Starlink worked well but it would reboot, which got annoying.

But cell signal works great, quiet (even if it was close to the highway), no one bothered me.

Good Spot

We spent a night here after visiting the north rim of the Grand Canyon. You can continue on 89A east to get to Vermillion Cliffs, which is very close.

Deer hunting must occur in this area, though we didn't hear any gunfire, but rather saw 4 deer legs chopped off and tossed on the side of the road.

This particular spot where we stayed (36.7420000, -112.1884440) was very easy to access in our 26ft class c. It's basically a pull through loop so you don't even need to turn around. It's a huge spot, good for a big group and would fit several campers. Spot was flat enough and we managed to scoot around enough and find a flat spot without getting out our levels.

Good cell service for att and Verizon. We would have stayed longer but it was too cold for us when we stayed at the end of October (below freezing overnight).

Beautiful, spacious area right off the 89A

We decided to disperse camp for the weekend of Halloween. Weather was beautiful, but cold during the evening due to the moisture in the air. The location is literally a few minutes off the 89A, not too hard to miss the service road turn off. We checked out the other sites about a mile in and everything was a little wet/muddy, so we decided to set camp at this location. According to Kaibab NF MVUM, dispersed camping is allowed along open FS roads (https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/kaibab/maps-pubs/?cid=fseprd490027)..)

Space is very open with trees surrounding the area. This spot has a trail nearby, so we had seen a few hikers throughout the weekend. Previous campers created a firepit, but make sure to check with the North Kaibab rangers on fire restrictions (https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/kaibab/alerts-notices)..). Surprisingly decent cell service(Tmobile/AT&T).

About an hour and half to Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. Along our trip there, we also went to Vermillion Cliffs/Marble Canyon. Very beautiful, must see places.

Short Dispersed area but nice

The FS road #247 is a nice gravel road in for about a mile, after that it narrows just past an open area with gravel piles...would not go much past with a TT without a recon first. 3-4 nice sites on the flats along the road...no toilets, water, trash dumpsters or metal fire rings. Cell signal was surprising ok due to close proximity to the towers just north of Jacob Lake. Dispersed Camping is allowed along open FS roads per the Kaibab NF MVUM (https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/kaibab/maps-pubs/?cid=fseprd490027).
