Within the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area, this Arizona Game and Fish Department campground operates as a staging area for one of the Southwest's most significant wildlife viewing opportunities. The camping consists of pullout spots along a dirt road loop where RVs up to 50 feet can park alongside pipe-enclosed picnic tables. Access requires navigating a dirt road that can accumulate loose dust, and the main parking area fills with wildlife watchers during peak viewing times.
From October through March, approximately 20,000 Sandhill Cranes use the area's lake as their nighttime roost. Campers position themselves to witness the morning and evening flights as the birds leave to feed in surrounding agricultural fields and return at dusk. An old pole barn beyond the parking loop houses Barn Owls, and walking toward the lake from there provides optimal crane viewing. The open valley setting offers clear sightlines to distant mountain ranges in all directions.
The campground provides pit toilets and trash service but no potable water, requiring campers to bring their own supply. Cell service reaches the area, and both pets and alcohol are permitted. "Turn to the right of the barn and walk toward the lake," suggests Jamie P., noting the evening spectacle of cranes returning to roost.
An overflow camping area offers additional flat sites when the main loop reaches capacity. Campers exploring camping near Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area will find this location works best during winter months when crane populations peak.
