Six miles southeast of Apache Junction, Usery Mountain Regional Park operates as a Maricopa County facility with gravel sites spread across the Sonoran Desert landscape. The campground sits beneath the Usery and Superstition Mountains, where saguaro cacti dot the terrain and archery range activity begins at 7am daily.
Campers find numbered sites with concrete picnic tables, metal fire rings, and electrical and water hookups at each location. "Sites are spaced out and the restrooms/showers were super clean," reports Janet B.. The facilities include individual shower and restroom stalls, though some lack hooks for personal items. Light pollution from nearby Phoenix creates silhouetted views of desert plants at night rather than dark skies.
The park connects to an extensive trail network extending into Tonto National Forest. Wind Cave Trail draws frequent visitors, while mountain biking trails and the Hawes trail system provide additional recreation options. An on-site archery range charges a small usage fee beyond park entry costs. Bird watching opportunities abound throughout the desert environment.
Reservations are recommended, particularly during peak season when the campground reaches capacity. Booking a site eliminates the $7 vehicle entry fee that day-use visitors pay. Sites offer minimal shade, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons. Nearby alternatives include buckhorn campground @ Usery regional mountain park for a different section of the same park system.
