Navajo National Monument Canyon View Campground

Hikers exploring ancient Ancestral Puebloan ruins find a base camp at Navajo National Monument Canyon View Campground, where gravel sites overlook Tsegi Canyon at 7,300 feet elevation. This National Park Service facility operates seasonally from April through September, offering free camping on a first-come, first-serve basis within the monument boundaries.

The campground sits along the canyon rim with juniper and piñon pine providing natural spacing between sites. Roger W. notes "There are some great sites, large and w great views," though several reviewers mention size restrictions limit rigs to 27-foot trailers or 28-foot motorhomes maximum. Sites feature picnic tables and charcoal grills, though fire rings are not provided and campfires are prohibited.

Campers access three interpretive trails leading to cliff dwelling viewpoints directly from the campground area. The visitor center, located adjacent to the camping area, provides exhibits on Navajo history and culture plus trail maps for the monument's archaeological sites. Cell service varies by carrier, with some reviewers reporting 1-3 bars coverage depending on location within the campground.

The nine-mile drive from Highway 160 climbs steadily through changing terrain, transitioning from desert to higher elevation forest. SpentBrassOffroad B. warns that "the road up to the grounds is a climb, so larger rigs will need to be prepared for that." Running water availability fluctuates seasonally, with pit toilets providing the primary facilities year-round.

Three other camping areas operate within the monument complex, including Navajo National Monument Sunset View Campground, offering additional site options when Canyon View reaches capacity. The campground's elevation provides cooler temperatures than surrounding desert areas, making it particularly appealing during Arizona's warmer months.

Wow! This is free?!

Canyon View and Sunset View campgrounds are both free in the Navajo National Monument. Sunset view is below and open year round. Canyon View is closed in the winter.

I camped in Sunset view and took the short walk up the road to check Canyon view out. The gate was closed. There's a gravel road that runs through the campground and although the sites are gravel, they appear to be more level than the paved sites in Sunset View.

Most of the sites looked like they were pull-through. While the site limit is 28 feet, it does look like they could accommodate a longer rig. A few of the sites are set right up to the edge of the canyon with amazing views.

No running water. Pit toilets. Picnic tables at each site. No fires allowed at all here.

Not sure when they open. I'm here at the end of March, but this is an amazing free find.

Great spot for an overnight

Nice campground with a clean bathroom. Small spaces best for vans, tents and small campers under 22'. Best part is it's FREE! Nice sunset views and nearby short hikes to see the canyon and ruins.

Beautiful and quiet

Nice large flat sites overlooking the canyon along a gravel road. No crowding. There are three pit toilets in the campground and picnic tables and a grill at each site. Very nice. We were delighted to visit the national monument and so glad we could stay here overnight.

Sunset View Campground

What a gem of a campground. Arrived around 5pm and there were several sites to choose from. I went with Site 2 as no one was in Site 1 and it was close to the bathrooms. It also was tucked away from Site 3.

2-3 bars of reliable T-Mobile 3G/LTE. Faucet (Running Water) is still OFF. Enjoyed a very quiet night under the stars.

No Frills Camping

Staff was extremely friendly at the welcome center. They do not charge for camping spots, and they are first come, first serve. There are also different campgrounds. The lower camp has more to offer, but the sites are closer together. I camped in the upper camp, and the spots each had a picnic table and grill. Also, 2 toilets located in that section. Beware, the first campsite I tried to camp at, was the last one in the row and was full of rattle snakes. So I agreed they owned that spot and moved on to another spot. Views were great and trails well maintained. The road up to the grounds is a climb, so larger rigs will need to be prepared for that.

Wonderful place

Very helpful staff with so much knowledge about the area. We chose the perfect time to visit, no crowds, easy access to camping, wild asses all over the place. Watch out for them in the early morning. The hiking trails were top notch! People were harvesting piñon nuts while we were here. We have been here several different times in our teardrop camper.

Beautiful, serene, perfect

We weren't sure what to expect traveling through mostly desert but after turning off 160 on to the road in it was clear the landscape was changing. By the time we arrived at the campground we were so hoping there was space available as the views and surroundings were incredible. The visitor center is very cool with information about the Navajo history and culture, and trails are remarkable if a bit challenging. We are so grateful to the Navajo Nation for sharing this with us, we will be back!

Excellent! There is a but. . .

We chose this CG off of TheDyrt and gave it a try. Rolled in around 2PM, it was nearly empty. Great CG. Staff at the Visitor Center was very friendly. Spot 14, as you can see had a great view and the sunset on this mid fall cold evening was outstanding.

The “but” part. It is a tight fit. I’d estimate that half the sites are single parking and will only accommodate a van or small Class C motorhome. At least three that I saw have a pretty steep slope front to back. Tents no problem. The pull through spaces will not permit a slide to be out due to blocking the road. We have a 26 ft trailer and a 3/4 ton truck. I wouldn’t try anything larger than this. Heed the warning sign at the entrance, 27’ trailer, 28’ motorhome, nothing larger. Essentially if it were busy and your equipment is on the larger end, your space choices will be limited.

I’ll close on a positive note. It’s still FREE! The cave dwellings and history are not to be missed. ✌️Out!

Beautiful place, Horrible damage to my car

That dirt road had a washout that caught me by surprise. Went nose first into it, finding more and more damage as I try to get it to a big city to repair. Kept going up the mountain. Gorgeous views, so much history. Place felt sacred. Couldn’t even camp, chased out by weather. 25 degrees and snowfall is no place for a damaged car.

Sunset View Campground

Camp site (Teardrop camping)

We stayed at the Sunset View CG since the Canyon View CG was closed when we got there. Both campgrounds are very close to each other. We took the unpaved road to get to the top of the hill where the CG was and it was a slow & shaky drive..... There is a paved road so don't be fooled by Waze :)

CG is very quiet and has scenic sites that are well spaced out. The sites were big enough and paved well to easily park teardrop trailers and RVs. It felt very private with not many people on the campground. The wind in October was pretty strong so be prepared.

Hidden Gem - FREE!

A must stop - we cannot believe this campground is free and so unpopular. There are full service restrooms with a camp sink outside, charcoal grills and picnic tables at each site. Note that fires are not permitted and sites do not have fire rings. We arrived around 5pm on a Monday on our way from North Rim Grand Canton to Monument Vally and Arches. There were only 4 or 5 others here and about 30 sites. The sites are spread out and have great privacy between them thanks to vegetation. The temperature is mild and we’re in for a fantastic sunset view from our site tonight (#4)!
