Alpine Divide Campground

Part of the Apache National Forest system, Alpine Divide Campground sits directly along Highway 191 at an elevation that puts campers among ponderosa pines. The Forest Service operates this 12-site facility from May through September, though recent reports indicate only half the sites remain accessible due to maintenance issues.

The campground's roadside location brings both convenience and trade-offs. RVs up to 16 feet can navigate the entrance, and sites accommodate larger rigs with careful positioning. Each site includes a fire ring with grill attachment, perforated-style picnic table, and access to potable water spigots. Vault toilets serve the campground, and cell service reaches most areas.

Highway traffic creates a steady background presence, particularly noticeable until evening hours and resuming by early morning. Dee W. notes "road noise until 9pm and as of 7am, but not bad." The forest setting provides some natural screening, and wildlife occasionally appears near camp. Elk bugling has been reported during evening hours.

Access conditions vary seasonally, with some reviewers mentioning rough road surfaces during certain periods. For additional overnight options, campers can explore campgrounds near Alpine or consider Hulsey Lake Fishing Site to the north. The location works well for travelers moving through the high country who need a straightforward overnight stop with basic amenities.

Many campers appreciated the spacious, wooded sites with standard USFS amenities and beautiful mountain views. However, the location directly off busy Highway 191 creates notable road noise that several visitors found disruptive.

If you just need to pull off easy to sleep

Right along the highway on a big climb from both sides. Maybe when the b/w photo was taken it was cool with 10% of the traffic now? The road is crazy busy these days. I would not recommend this location.

Great Setting, Average Site

Alpine Divide is nestled in the Ponderosa Pines just outside of Alpine, AZ. It is pretty typical for a USFS site of its type. Perforated style picnic table, fire ring with grill attachment, vault toilet. The views are amazing, though! It is right off the highway so there is some road noise and half of the 12 sites are currently inaccessible (as of 2021).

Camp amid tall ponderosa pines

Wooded wonderland. Fire rings, picnic tables, potable water access and toilets. Elk were bugling at dusk! Large pull in spots fit our 36' class A with slide out just fine. Downside is that it's just off 191 so road noise until 9pm and as of 7am, but not bad.

Great car/pull behind camping

Had decent sized campsites with water spigots and a fire ring. Flushing toilets. Absolutely beautiful to wake up to, and right off the road.
