Lower Chatanika State Recreation Area operates year-round at $45 per night with drive-in access and electronic payment options available. The campground surrounds Olnes Pond, with sites arranged around the water's perimeter and varying spacing between them. Some sites include picnic tables and fire pits while others do not, and several spots sit directly on the pond's edge.
The stocked pond draws anglers targeting rainbow trout, though fishing success depends on seasonal timing. Day visitors often bring kayaks and paddle boards to use the water, and a boat launch provides access to the adjacent Chatanika River. Samantha M. noted the campground "seemed more as a party spot sort of camping oppose to enjoy the view and relax so be ready to hear ATVs and friendly conversations late at night."
The facility includes restrooms, trash collection, and grassy areas for day use, though bathrooms lock after Labor Day. ATV traffic on surrounding roads creates noise, and the pond carries a risk of swimmer's itch. Whitefish Campground sits just down the road as an alternative option. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis for camping sites, with one reservable cabin available through online booking only.
