Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Spanish Fort, AL

Blakeley State Park Campground and Meaher State Park Campground welcome pets throughout their grounds with designated pet-friendly accommodations for tent, RV, and cabin camping. Both parks maintain clean, accessible areas where dogs can exercise while on leash. Meaher State Park's waterfront location provides scenic walking paths for pet owners, though alligator warnings are posted in certain areas. Harper Campground at Blakeley State Park offers more secluded sites with ample space between neighbors, making it ideal for campers with reactive dogs. The Retreat RV & Campground on Styx River features a separate pet beach where dogs can enjoy water access. Most campgrounds require pets to remain on leash at all times outside designated off-leash areas, with typical leash length restrictions of 6 feet. Sites are generally equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, allowing pet owners to keep their companions nearby during meals and evening relaxation.

Gulf State Park Campground's dog park sits adjacent to a lake where dogs can swim and run freely, though local campers note alligator warning signs are present despite rarely seeing the reptiles. The park's extensive trail system connects to over 28 miles of paved paths suitable for dog walking, though pets are not permitted on the Gulf beaches. Chickasabogue Park offers several short, easy hiking paths ideal for exercising dogs in a natural setting. Campgrounds typically provide waste disposal stations with complimentary bags throughout the grounds. Veterinary services are available within 15 minutes of most Spanish Fort campgrounds, with emergency clinics in Mobile approximately 20 minutes away. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F, requiring extra water provisions and shade considerations for pets, while winter camping offers more comfortable conditions for furry companions with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing.

    Pensacola RV Park

    Very clean park!

We enjoyed the appreciation that the parks shows to the military. And the park is great for pets, because it has multiple dog parks. Beautiful Oak trees surround the property. The staff was very helpful when arriving to help with parking.

Fort Pickens Campground — Gulf Islands National Seashore

    Good but not very private

We went tent camping for two nights with our pups at Fort Pickens and we really did enjoy it. The campground was nice and clean. They had nice showers and potties as well. The showers in the RV section have better shower heads btw. The beaches are gorgeous! A tip for travelers with pets, FL does not allow dogs on their beaches accept in specific "dog park" locations. Our dogs are not.. eh, normal .. so we ended up driving down to a private beach so they could enjoy the ocean. There is a lot of night life but We decided to skip that this trip. We enjoyed the beaches in the park at night and i highly recommend it! All in all we enjoyed our trip but we probably won't be back to Fort Pickens campground. The sites are very close together and we had a very nosey and drunk neighbor who really wanted to chat. We camp to get away from people, just saying. We were also bothered by RV and truck lights shining directly into our tent both nights from people driving through the campground. Not the best but we enjoyed camping at the beach.

    Deer Creek RV Park

Highly Recommend and will stay here again

We stayed at Deer Creek RV Park after returning from Florida headed back out west and this place is awesome. It is very conveniently located off I-65 and the park is very well kept, bathhouses are immaculate and very large. Has a dog park which our dog loved being off leash and owners are very nice, informative and can also recommend great restaurants around. They also have two other RV sites close to Gulf Shores and OWA in Foley. Highly recommend!

    Gulf Shores-Pensacola West KOA

    Enjoyed Our Stay

We stayed for the weekend. First thoughts were that it felt a bit cramped. We had an issue with the electrical that we couldn’t figure out, but one of the campground workers was very nice and tried to help us figure out the issue. We loved walking to the waterfront. My son enjoyed the basketball court. My kids loved the pool. It was quiet at night. The dog park consists of two fenced in areas which was nice because my dog gets bored quickly of the same area, so I alternated between the two. Overall it was a decent stay. The basic pull throughs do not have a fire pit, which sucked because it was chilly at night. The store was nice, as well. There is an entrance and an exit on opposite ends of the park - the exit is a bit tight and my husband was nervous to pull the camper that way. We noticed several people going out the entrance because it’s easier, just a heads up.

    Gulf State Park Campground

Spacious sites, amenities and close to ocean, but no dogs

This was our first visit to Gulf Shores State Park in Alabama.  The check in was as slow as molasses even though they had lots of staff, mostly standing.  Waited in line for 45 minutes with one person ahead of us taking her sweet time to book a future campsite.  Our site was nice, spacious with privacy.  We were worried about the alligators and snakes so kept pups on a short leash.

The beach was beautiful, with sandy white shores and lots of shells.  However, if you have dogs, it's a no-go so they have to stay back at the camp.  They do have a lovely dog park, right on the lake where dogs can run and swim, but the 'do not feed alligators' was a concern.  Locals said they had never seen one in 15 years... so not sure and not sure I want my dog to be the exception.

We enjoyed the friendly, southern hospitality of the town and would definitely return.  I would investigate other dog friendly places in the area.

    Perdido Key RV Resort

    Small and fairly quiet

This RV park is tucked under the overpass and situated across from a golf course and next to a neighborhood. We were able to safely ride our bikes on the sidewalk to the public beach that wasn’t far at all. There’s also a public dog park/beach not far from the RV park. The little beach at the RV park is right where the house boats anchor and so it’s a little awkward to sit for a while as you feel you’re looking into their living room windows. The pool is nice - there’s a shaded canopy area on the side of the pool. Perdido Key is a very quiet town with not a lot to do and shuts down pretty early.
The public beach at the end of the road was hard to find a parking spot - very small parking lot with limited parking.

Guide to Spanish Fort

Camping near Spanish Fort, Alabama offers access to diverse ecosystems within the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, where freshwater rivers meet the saltwater of Mobile Bay. Most campgrounds in this area sit at elevations between 10-50 feet above sea level with warm, humid summers reaching 90°F and mild winters rarely dropping below freezing. Seasonal rainfall patterns create lush vegetation throughout the delta's wetlands, making spring and fall the most comfortable seasons for tent campers.

What to do

Hiking history trails: Blakeley State Park covers over 2,000 acres with 26 miles of trails through historic sites. "You will walk through historic civil war sites, trails that were once the streets of the town of Blakeley. A beautiful hike on boardwalks along the Blakeley River then through a swamp on deep into woods amongst ancient oaks," reports Julie D.

Mountain biking: Harper Campground at Blakeley State Park offers access to trails suitable for bikes. "Friendly staff. Mountain biking. Campsites with them without electricity and water. Great place to stay," notes Robert N. The trails connect to wider park areas with varying difficulty levels.

Water recreation: The Retreat RV & Campground provides access to the Styx River. "The river bank is gorgeous and we even spent a dinner out next to the river," shares Chloe F. The campground offers tubing experiences, though at $30 per person, some campers find it expensive.

Disc golf: Mobile County Park features a disc golf course available for a small fee. The course has multiple holes through wooded areas and open fields, making it suitable for various skill levels.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Blakeley State Park Campground gets high marks for site size. "HUGE sites, very secluded. If I look really hard through the woods I can see a neighbor," says Laurie A. Sites include fire rings and picnic tables with ample distance between neighbors.

Access to wildlife viewing: Waterfront sites provide opportunities to spot local fauna. "Kayaking trails all around in the park and local. Close by to big city life but camping in the wild yonder," Christie M. mentions about Apalachee RV Campground. Morning and evening hours are best for wildlife sightings.

Historical attractions: Civil War history features prominently at several sites. "2000 acres walking auto cell phone tours of civil war, boat tours, big pull through rv spots and a tent campground. Awesome," Kevin L. notes about Blakeley State Park. Self-guided historical tours are available year-round.

Fishing opportunities: Live Oak Landing provides access to the Tensaw River system. "We enjoyed 2 nights here along the tensaw river. There is a big boat ramp to explore the delta," Steven B. reports. Fishing licenses are required and can be purchased online or at local stores.

What you should know

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds require additional equipment. "Be carefull. Some of the sites are so unlevel. But the historical tour of the park is amazing," warns Michael about Blakeley State Park. Bringing extra leveling blocks is recommended, especially for larger RVs.

Seasonal considerations: Summer heat affects camping comfort. "Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity from June through September. The ground can become saturated quickly after rain, particularly at sites near water.

Insects and wildlife: Meaher State Park Campground requires preparation for insects. "I had read reviews about the ants prior so I came prepared," Karen L. notes. Bringing ant barriers and insect repellent is essential from March through October.

Road access limitations: "This is a neat little campground that kinda sits between 8 mile and Saraland,AL. Not a very big area for you to camp if you have a pull behind or big RV. But people do manage to get the bigger camper and RV's in and parked," Shannon W. advises about Chickasabogue Park.

Tips for camping with families

Junior ranger programs: "We woke up to begin the junior ranger packet for our kiddos (provided at checkout) and hiked and explored all day," Nicole G. shares about her Blakeley State Park experience. These educational packets are available year-round at no additional cost.

Family-friendly water access: Mobile County Park Chickasabogue Park offers swimming areas. "There is a river with a beach and a swimming area. You can rent canoes," reports Jerimmey M. The swimming area includes a roped-off section designated for children.

Playground access: "Nice covered patios with tables near swimming area," Jennifer G. notes about Chickasabogue Park. Several campgrounds maintain playgrounds with equipment suitable for various age groups.

Multiple accommodation options: Family camping flexibility exists at several parks. "There's a boat launch if you want to bring your own. Food truck on Saturday for lunch was a nice surprise," MomSolo writes about Blakeley State Park.

Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: "Sites are level but mostly dirt. Fire rings and they deliver your firewood to your site," Clay M. says about Chickasabogue Park. Full hookup sites cost approximately $28 for water, electric, and sewer connections.

Proximity to services: Shady Acres Campground offers convenience to major highways. "Just 5 minutes from Interstate 10, but no traffic noise! We stayed in site 25. Slightly unlevel gravel, drive through spot, not enough to worry about blocking," Cat R. mentions. The location provides easy access to grocery stores and fuel stations.

Cell service considerations: "ATT and Verizon were excellent for working from camper," reports Heather C. about Shady Acres, making it suitable for digital nomads needing connectivity while camping.

Dump station conditions: "Their dump station was terribly unlevel and we had many issues dumping our tanks," cautions Chloe F. about The Retreat on Styx River. Checking dump station access beforehand saves time when departing.
