Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Hayden, AL

Rickwood Caverns State Park Campground accommodates pets at all 13 RV and 5 primitive campsites. The campground features clean bathroom facilities and a well-maintained camping area where dogs can join their owners in exploring the surrounding wooded areas. Smith Lake Park provides similar pet-friendly options with numerous tent and RV sites, plus cabins where pets are permitted. The primitive camping loop at Rickwood Caverns offers spacious sites bordered by woods and hills, giving pets plenty of room to explore while remaining on leash. Bathhouses remain clean and accessible from most pet-friendly sites, though some campers note the facilities could use additional hooks for hanging shower supplies when camping with pets.

Trails near the pet-friendly campgrounds provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with the Fossil Mountain trail at Rickwood Caverns offering a rocky but manageable terrain for leashed pets. Dogs must remain supervised throughout the camping areas, particularly at Smith Lake Park where the campground can become crowded during peak summer months. The cave tour at Rickwood Caverns does not permit pets, requiring owners to leave animals properly secured at their campsite during these excursions. Summer temperatures in Alabama can reach uncomfortable levels for pets, making the shaded primitive sites particularly valuable for dog owners. Cullman Campground and The Ridge Outdoor Resort also welcome pets with specific designated areas. Most campsites include water access, fire rings and picnic tables where campers can relax with their dogs after exploring the parks' natural features.

    Time Away RV Resort

    Very nice campground

This is a really nice RV park that provides close access to the racetrack. It is wonderfully taken care of and has recently been renovated. They have a playground and several covered areas for picnics and group gatherings. A key bonus to this site is the pool which is very necessary when camping in Alabama in the summer. Overall, I would definitely suggest checking this campground out as an option if you are headed to a race and coming for the weekend.

    Point Mallard City Campground

Only a small area is for short term , no wifi

No wifi per office with no known date of repair. Relatively quiet, lots of vehicle traffic and golf carts. Office staff is very helpful and friendly. Majority of park is longterm. Dog friendly, no dog park at location. Close to shopping but far enough away for quiet.

    Bama Campground & RV Park

Great campground to hike Bankhead National Forest

This is a great little campground tucked away on the edge of Bankhead National Forest. The location of the campground makes it an excellent location to enjoy the numerous waterfall hikes in the area. The campground was laid out well with spacious gravel sites and full hookups. Sites 2-4 had good views of the pond/field, sites 10-15 backed up to the tree line to provide a little shade all other sites had full sun. The camp host was super friendly and helpful. They have a general store, laundry, bathhouse, and small dog park. The campground has hiking trails on the property if you don’t have time to visit Bankhead NF. If you’re in the area or wanting to spend time in Bankhead NF I’d recommend checking this campground out.

    Thousand Trails Hidden Cove

    Very nice, quiet campground

Great campground & people! Only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the lack of things to do. No fenced in dog park but plenty of space to have one. Right on the lake but unaware of any kind of rentals available nearby— closest rentals are 40 mins away on the opposite side of the lake. Nearest Walmart is Cullman which is 45 mins away. Wouldn’t recommend staying here if you prefer to be closer to the city but perfect if you want to be in the middle of the woods and have no reason to leave. Very hot, humid and rainy time of year! Would be back in the fall perhaps.

    Lake Guntersville State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park, something for everyone!

Visited Lake Guntersville State Park, for the day. After taking our granddaughter to Screaming Eagle Zip-line Adventures, located at the gorgeous Lodge, we visited the Campground…and it’s amazing! At the office, we were helped by Rocky, who was friendly and knowledgeable! We received CG info and a map, as well as rates. We are already planning our next trip to visit! The general store was stocked with necessities, as well as souvenirs. Of course we had to get some ice cream! There are several types of sites, monthly, cabins and tent camping. There are boat slips (local rentals) and a Pavilion on the water, basketball and tennis courts, playground, shady dog park, splash pad, and clean bathhouses. Firewood and ice can be purchased at the store. There are also many trails to hike and bike . It is easy to see that this SP is well maintained! The SP Lodge is worth visiting, which has a nice restaurant. LGSP has a golf course, and the quaint town is close by and has shopping and several restaurants.

What to do

Very spacious with a huge fire pit. Easy walking distance to bathhouse. Great hiking as well," reports a visitor to the Clear Creek Recreation Area.

Explore local attractions: The region offers several unique sites within short driving distance. "We were stopping in Cullman County to be with family. Since we were driving through with our RV, we stayed at Smith Lake for the evening. It was ok. The pool was nice. The lake is always nice," reports one visitor describing amenities at Smith Lake Park.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Many campgrounds offer generous space between sites. "Large spacious sites, quite, and clean. You can find a site to satisfy almost anyone. Lots of sites on the water. If you prefer seclusion, try the upper grounds," writes a visitor to Clear Creek.

Wildlife viewing: Early morning and evening hours provide opportunities to spot local wildlife. "You will see deer in the morning and are likely to have a visitor, raccoons, during the night," mentions a Clear Creek camper about their experience at this dog-friendly campground near Hayden.

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept bathroom facilities. "The bathrooms are really clean but also not the dirtiest. There's general supplies provided," notes a camper at Smith Lake Park, adding "Bath house shower had great hot water with good pressure."

What you should know

Seasonal availability: Some facilities close during winter months or have limited operations. "The pool was closed when we were there in April, but I believe they said it was closed indefinitely," reports a Rickwood Caverns visitor.

Campground layouts: Site arrangements vary significantly between different camping areas. "We were able to stay in the primitive camping 'loop' and had SO much space and woods to run in, hills to climb, and space to explore. It was absolutely perfect for kids," details one camper at Rickwood Caverns.

Cell service limitations: Coverage varies throughout the region. "I had no reception with Verizon but my AT&T hotspot had good reception," notes a camper at Thousand Trails Hidden Cove, which offers pet-friendly camping options near Hayden.

Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-friendly amenities: Several campgrounds have dedicated facilities for children. "We absolutely love camping here. The campground is small but it's nice and clean! Very peaceful and relaxing! The pool is a major hit in the summer," shares a family staying at Rickwood Caverns.

Consider hiking difficulty: Trails vary in challenge level for different ages. "We hiked the Fossil Mountain trail, which is very rocky," reports one camper at Rickwood Caverns, providing helpful information for families with pets or small children.

Check beach conditions: Swimming areas may have varying terrain. "The beach area had a lot of rocks! Probably due to water level low had to go buy some water shoes, but then it was all good," advises a visitor to Corinth Recreation Area.

Tips from RVers

Site selection matters: Some campgrounds have significant variation between sites. "We stayed on site #17 on the Fox loop. It's right on the water and couldn't have been more perfect!!" recommends a visitor at Clear Creek Recreation Area.

Hookup availability: Utilities vary between campgrounds and specific sites. "Our site was cleaned before we arrived; no coals in the grill or ash in the pit," notes a visitor to Clear Creek who appreciated the attention to detail.

Parking considerations: Some layouts create challenges for larger vehicles. "The pull thrus are not a true pull thru. Just a big gravel lot!!" warns one RVer about Smith Lake Park, highlighting the importance of researching specific site configurations for pet-friendly campgrounds near the Hayden area.
