Located along Highway 26, the Hatchet campground offers a great place to stop for the night when travelling the scenic highway between Jackson and Dubois, Wyoming. Opportunities for fishing designated wild and scenic rivers are available nearby. During the fall hunting season, this campground offers a popular staging area. This site is equipped with 9 campsites, accessibility to bear boxes, access to water, a single-unit vault toilet, campfire rings, and a dumpster.

Directions

Starting from Moran, Wyoming (located 27 miles south of Yellowstone National Park’s south entrance and 19 miles north of the Town of Moose, Wyoming), head east on United States Highway 26/287 for approximately 8 miles. Turn right onto Flagstaff Road/Forest Service (FS) Road 30160. Then take the first left onto FS 30217, arriving at the Hatchet Campground. Approximate travel details from Moran: 8 miles, 9 minutes.

Perfect place

Small campground but met our needs. After season there is no fee. Sadly with garbage service ended, dumpsters were locked and we witnessed dog walkers emptying poop baggies in vault toilet. Local RVer frequent this campground and warned of bears venturing through campground. We vigilantly kept things locked up & saw no bears.

Dispersed site behind hatchet

We stayed in a dispersed site on the road behind Hatchet campground. There were 10’pr so sites not really marked and very far apart. The mosquitos were the worst I’ve ever seen in my life and I am from south coast of Texas. It was ok for a night as long as you didn’t get out of your car.

Close to GTNP and YNP

This is a basic forest service campground. Potable water, bear boxes and pit toilets. We have a big rig and stayed in overflow. This is a home base campground to visit the amazing area. There is dispersed camping down the road, but since there was alot of rain in the forecast, we opted for the gravel overflow area. The highway quiets down at night, so it is very peaceful for sleeping. Hatchet Resort is next door for meals and/or fuel if desired. It is 8 miles from the Northern entrance into GTNP near Jackson Lake. We paid Senior Pass rate on overflow fees. The limit is 16 days, so we opted to stay for the full time since potable water was present.

Definitely a sweet deal near Tetons!

The sites were decent, I arrived late and left early so I wasn't able to really what the area looked like. Pit toilets were about average. But eitherway for $12/night this is a deal!

Crowded, just off main road

This campsite is convenient location wise as it is just off the main road very close to the Grand Tetons. However, this makes it very crowded and hard to get a spot as well as decreases the Privacy available at the campsites.

Loved it!

The site was spaced away from others. You have to drive up a pretty steep hill depending on your site. We wish that it had more amenities but it was so gorgeous that you don't really mind.

Small campground, convenient location.

This campground features nine small-ish sites through the center section of the woods with two new larger sites right by the highway. The 2 newer sites have water and electric, but I believe it's only during the active season as they were not available when we stayed. Most are back in however there are a few that are pull through. If you depend on solar you're going to have a lot of shading in this park. It is free in the off-season, we stayed the first week of October with no reservations required. there are two water spigots in the center of the park that are also off during the off season, but there is a vault toilet available year round. In the center of the park are some tent usable sites. During season there's trash service but it is also padlocked shut during the off-season. Each site does feature a bear resistant food enclosure and a nice picnic table. The view of the Stars here is phenomenal. Just another side of the highway is a babbling Creek that you get to listen to. We stayed at a site near the highway but the highway noise really did not bother us. There is overflow parking nearby so if there are no sites available and you just need a place to park for the night there were several people who took advantage of that. Just up the road from this campground are some dispersed camping options which are free year round. The park ranger station is about a quarter mile from the entrance and there's also a gas station within a half mile of the entrance. We found The Virginian RV park in Jackson hole to be a good place to dump and refill for a modest fee of $10. The Shell station on Broadway also has fresh water and propane service but no longer offers a dump service.
