Best state park I’ve been to!

Stayed here on a east/west camping trip. Beautiful state park. Sites are shaded and large. Big enough that we were able to tie out 2 large dogs each on 30 ft leads. The park has a bicycle path that walkers can also use that’s along the river. Our site backed up to the bicycle path with the river behind us. Great place to walk. Staff and hosts very friendly and helpful. Don’t be alarmed when you drive by a school and housing area to get to it! The park also has an off leash dog park. I wasn’t able to check that out though but have wished state parks would consider adding. Bathrooms extremely clean with the best state park showers Ive ever used (and I mostly camp at state parks across the US). If I get back to this area I would definitely camp here again.

Quiet, clean SP

We camped here the end of August. When I booked our site the state park website showed it as the only available site for our 4 day stay. So we booked the 4th night at a different site, same park. However, no one ever came into the original site. We also noticed this occurred with some other sites that were vacant during our entire stay. I’m sure not the parks fault. In state folks (we are out of state so paid more) don’t mind the cancellation fee or book way out and then change. Very frustrating when you have to move your camper for one night. Staff very nice. Flush toilets and bathhouse very clean. Showers with hot water and good water pressure. Sites are wooded and good size. Only complaint is the dirt base all around the campsites (very little grass due to the shade). We are from VA and most state parks have gravel pads. Nice walking trails. Didn’t see the picnic/swim area as dogs weren’t allowed anywhere there. They do have one fishing kayak. Not very good for shore fishing. Not thrilled with site #6 but site #22 was great with a nice view of the lake.

Waterfront and in the pines

A pretty little state park in a pine forest. Nearly every campsite in the northern campground has waterfront access. So many lovely kayak routes on a peaceful flowage area. Only complaint is the noise from a nearby state highway - the noise travels out here. Try to book site 42, you’ll thank me later.

A kayakers dream…

Brunet Island is a kayakers paradise, you can literally get your kayak in the water from any site. Most sites are either waterfront or a short trail to the water. Our site was good sized and magnificent views were had. We used the north campground, a hike to flush toilets which are in the south campground. The south campground is basically an RV park, if that isn’t your thing I would go with the north campground.

The prettiest waterfront site

We camped here last weekend and it was a little slice of paradise. We had a waterfront site (most of the nonelectric sites are along the water) and it was perfect for kayaking. My only advice would be to get a site along the main river for fishing/swimming as we were on the inside and the water was very murky. If we go back we’re going to try to book site 42 (along with every one else as it seems that site is always in high demand) as it is a small site, but allows for fishing, swimming and kayaking all from the site itself. Not very shady and no trees at that one though and our site (49) had plenty.

Beautiful quiet campground on island with forest and river surrounding it.

This is one of our favorite Wisconsin state parks. It is quiet and shady, next to the Chippewa River. You can kayak on the river and in-between the islands where the water is very calm and full of lily pads and wildlife. There is a paved bike trail, Old Abe, that connects to the park and is 20 miles long to Chippewa Falls. It's an easy bike ride, a few miles, into Cornell for ice cream at one of 2 shops that have it! One camground loop has electric and bathroom with showers and flush toilets. The other loop has no electric and pit toilets and has many sites next to the water. Campsites are roomy and shaded.

Great place to relax

I camped overnight as part of my hiking of the ice age trail which is very close to this campsite. The complex was very clean and hiking trails in the park were nice as well. I would definitely go back.

Excelent campsites, little privacy

I stayed at the north campsite #47.

Campsites were nice, spacious, level, and had plenty of twigs for fire tinder. You could also see water from both either side of the campgrounds.

Cell service was good, I was able to hotspot Netflix to my laptop as the night winded to an end.

Toilets were pit toilets, but wernt the old gross ones. They were decent and the one I used did not smell like bowels.

The firepits also had grills so you could cook and a picnic table for seating.

All and all campsite was nice. However, I like privacy when I camp and I like feeling remote which I did not get here.

Unique park on an island

The campground is very cramped, but offers great sites right along the water. Perfect for kayaking. Lots of wildlife sightings as well. I'd recommend staying in the North Campground, as pretty much every single site is on the water - although it's more rustic than the south campground. A town with some restaurants/breweries/shops is within hiking distance, as well.

We loved it

We loved brunet island state park and will definitely go back. We went right after Labor Day weekend and it was still half full with campers. We enjoy mid week camping so it’s not so busy. Beware the raccoons are ninjas and will definitely come visit. We kayaked and hiked a couple times and loved both. There were tons of mushrooms in the woods which made hiking even more fun. The beach is huge but it was too chilly to swim when we were there. There was no wood available there that we knew of so we made a short drive into town and found some for sale on the street after the gas station in town. Most of the campsites you can drop right into the water from which is also awesome. It was windy the first day we were there and we were camped on the west side of the campground. It got a little crazy but the views of the sunset made it totally worth it.

Site 44

September/2020 Site was nice. We didn't have anyone next to us (site 46), if we had, it would have felt less private. Not many trees between sites 44-48. Site is set back and right on the waterfront, could launch a canoe/kayak. Definitely one of the better views and water was clear. On the other side water was more Marshy. Site was pretty open to the road, and not too close/far from the restroom. Restrooms were very well maintained (cleaned daily) probably the best vault toilets I've come across ha!

The South campground was mostly larger campers/RVs and is very open. Has has flush toilets and showers.

Do I mention the cabin?

Would definitely come back. Beautiful park. Great for those who enjoy kayaking/being near water.

Awesome Camping Destination

What a great place to visit this time of year (Fall). Falling acorns, frogs and chipmunks chirping, turtles basking in sunlight and more. The owls at night were a treat (sometimes even scary) to listen to.

Clean facilities and nice trails. Next time we’ll bring some kayaks.

Probably my favorite camping spot

I absolutely loved this campground. The area was kept very clean. The spot that I reserved was beautiful. Loved that it was tucked in the back of the camping area and was able to put my canoe in the water at my spot. The site I had was huge. Probably about 3x larger than any site I’ve been to before. And driving through the area was beautiful and lush

Beautiful, large variety of outdoor activities

Beautiful with all sorts of outdoor activities. Great fishing, perfect kayak and Conoe location as well as motorized boats, swimming and also land recreation like serene hiking trails and an extensive bike trail.

Comfortable park in western WI

We camped here in the fall and the colors were lovely. The camping was sort of open but sites are spaced nicely so we didn't feel like we were on top of each other. The nature trail was very nice - the biking was also good. We took advantage of being near Lake Wissota State Pk and explored that too.

good place to kayak

the island is a nice place to visit. we stayed in the north loop on a water front site . great for just putting the kayaks in and going . they are vary dog and family friendly. the camp sites are a little close for my liking but it was a busy labor day weekend and every site was filled . my only big complaint would have to be that they only have one shower house on the other loop(South loop) north loop just have vault toliets . all in all I would recommend this place .

Island Camping

Brunet Island State Park sits at the North West corner of the state of Wisconsin. The state park is actually an island that sits on the Chippewa and Fisher Rivers. It is connected to the mainland via small Bridge. This is very close to the city of Cornell, they have a grocery store for most of your necessities, enough to get to buy for a few days of camping there's also a mom and pop ice cream shop nearby. This park does offer two different Camp Loops the North and South. The North sits along a bay off of the Chippewa River ,many of the campsites overlook this area of water. This may sound nice but there are a lot of a echoes from your neighbors across the way. The campfires that light up the lake create pretty sight of ambiance if you can stay out there and beat the mosquitoes. The south camp is closer to the beach and also offers flush toilets and showers. The park also offers a boat landing, playground and baseball field. It should be noted that there are multiple fishing piers at this location, one at the South Campground and one at the north Campground, and there is a lot of good fishing in the area. There are some hiking trails nothing too challenging or long.This area is beautiful but the campgrounds themselves are not very kept. Other than camping on an island and having a double site as well as the wild life, I cannot say this is one of my favorites.

Water paradise minus mosquitoes

Getting onto this island takes you back to an earlier time in life, the whole island is dedicated to the state park. With so much water I was afraid I would be bathing my kids in big spray but we didn’t have to put any on! We met up with some friends from MN as a half way point and we had a blast. Kids were kept busy and entertained with the natural wonders. Canoe and kayak rentals were reasonable and they dropped it off at your campsite. All mature trees provide wonderful shade in the dead heat of summer. If you love water sports; kayaking, canoeing, fishing or bird watching this place is perfect!! Lake front access at each unit.

Beautiful!

The North Loop has beautiful waterfront sites! The bathrooms are amazingly clean and for some reason the whole place was mosquito free! The only done side was that the “beach” is not real swimmer friendly. No sand at all, lots of rocks. The boat launch was actually better to swim at.

Beautiful setting

You really feels the outside world woes melt away at this island park on the Chippewa River. Large sites, many right on the water to make launching your kayak easy. Lots of slow moving inlets to paddle into and get lost in nature and fishing if you like. Nice hikes to take and part of a great biking trail. The park has a beach and volleyball area. Great for large group get togethers.

Great Park

Good job WI DNR! We stay on the backwaters of the North campground every summer. Easy kayaking in the backwaters, miles of flat bike trail connected to the park. Boat ramp on to the Chippewa for anglers. Nightly raccoon and owl entertainment, when you can walk away from the campfire and it's so dark you can't see your hand in front of your face. Almost all sites are decent. Facilities are good. Lots to do.

Great Variety

There are electric sites close to the beach and picnic areas, but we prefer the more primitive sites which are in a different area. The electric sites are across the camp road, but mostly within eyesight of the Chippewa River. The non-electrics have some sites along the river, and many in some backwater areas. Most of the sites have canoe or kayak access to the water, which can easily be followed out to the river. There's also a great bicycle trail called the Old Abe Trail, which has its northern end at the park entrance. One downside would be the swimming beach, which was very rocky.

Nice park. Great for water fans.

We camped on the north campground loop (non-electrical) which has great water front sites. We are planning another trip up here during the weekday for a little more quiet experience. The trails are great with lots of wildlife spotted and many views of the rivers. The only downside was the crowds and noise. We went there on a Friday night and the sites were packed with campers. It does not appear that this state park adheres to the 6-person per site limit as many sites had about 10 people per site. The campground hosts are on the southern loop so maybe that part is quieter. Overall I would still recommend this, especially if you are a kayaker or canoe camper, as some sites had places to launch from.

My Review

Beautiful Wisconsin state park. Two campgrounds, the north campground is more primitive, the south campground, where we stayed, has electrical hookups. We stayed here in Oct. of 2014, our first night camping in our new RV. Only stayed one night, but we were impressed. Decent bathrooms and showers in the south campground.
