Easy camping, but road noise

Sites are nice and maybe the nicest (ok, cleanest) vault toilet I’ve seen. Road noise is an issue on sites closest to the highway. Pretty spot and the creek was raging when we visited.

WOW!

I’m not from here, so the scenery around every turn was AWESOME! There are so many roadside campgrounds all through this area and several of, not all are first come sites. Which can be frustrating during the busy season. If you like tent camping and know how to camp in wildlife areas YOU WILL LOVE this area. So many trails and things to see. Find a spot, take care of your fee and then go explore. Check out Manzana down the road. Stores , food and trailhead.

Lone Fir Campground

This campground is located directly off Highway 20. As in, close enough that you will hear road noise anytime a car goes by. But aside from that one downside, this campground is pretty great. Lone Fir campground does not take reservations, and as a last minute adventurer, I really appreciate that. There were a few sites open when we came on a Thursday and we chose the last site on the loop. But by Friday night, it was full. I was very pleased with the size of each site. There was a place dedicated to parking our car, a space for fires/ picnic table and a separate space down a little hill, surrounded by trees, for our tent and our hammock. For an off the highway site, we also had a fair amount of distance between sites. Our site had the water spigot for a few sites, so we had visitors on the edge of our site. The campground has toilets and dumpsters, but no showers. There is an interpretive trail right off the campground, and while advertised as wheelchair accessible, the trail had been washed out, bridges were down and many logs were on the trail. It was still very pretty. We were able to gather lots of firewood in the surrounding woods, so had a nice fire. This campground is close(driving) to Mazama, and several beautiful hikes– Blue Lake, Maple Pass, Cutthroat Pass, and Cutthroat Lake– and more. We also got beautiful sunsets. All in all, a good campground. I would definitely stay there again.

Smaller campground with mt view

Right off of hwy 20 on the east side of the pass, this campground see less rain and snow than the other side of the pass. Some hey noise here but has a great Mt view. Smaller sites that are closer together with fire rings and tables.

Forested Campground

The campground is surrounded by mountains and is located along Early Winters Creek. It’s a great home base to hike the many trails throughout the North Cascades National Park. After a long day, cool off in the creek. There are tent only and RV sites, dirt pads, paved roads, and plenty of shade.

Lone Fir

Super simple campground deep in the Cascades. This is a great choice if you can’t (or don’t want to) do much hiking since you get to see so much of the area’s beauty. This is open in the summer only since the road is literally closed down for much of the year. Some sites are very close to a creek. All seem to have excellent privacy. Pretty good mountain views with exceptional hiking nearby (even leaving from the campground). We met some people doing a bikepacking trip who stayed here, add that to your bucket list!

Beautiful National Forest Campground

Spent 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery of this quaint campground. Easy access to trails, river, and the towns of Mazama and Winthrop which are known for great hiking, climbing, mountain biking, etc. Very quiet, family oriented campground with clean, well-kept facilities. Not fancy, but had plenty of privacy, ADA accessible pit toilets, and drinking water. Campsite #19 is the best! Awesome for the price of $12 per night!

Great little campground

Lone Fir is the first campground you come to after going through the pass when heading east on HWY 20. Most of the sites have good privacy and there are vault toilets, water, garbage cans, etc. The trail head for Lone Fir Loop trail is at the campground which is a nice little hike. WTA was actually there doing trail maintenance not too long ago. There is a river behind the sites you can walk to too. My only beef with this campground is that it is at a higher elevation so it gets pretty chilly. It is literally about 10 degrees warmer if you keep heading east about 10 miles to Klipchuck. Not as busy though.
