About

National Forest

Campsites will accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs. The 64 camp units are spaced for privacy in a second-growth forested area. Big Creek, a small stream, is adjacent to the campground. Fires in developed campsites only. Three covered picnic shelters are available for group–day use only. Hiking, mountain climbing, fishing, swimming, and exceptional scenery can be enjoyed in the area. Lake Cushman and the Staircase entrance to Olympic National Park are nearby with a public boat ramp available in vicinity. A trailhead within the campground accesses Big Creek Campground Trail - a gentle loop around Big Creek Campground, and Upper Big Creek Loop - a longer loop trail which also links up to the Mt Ellinor Connector Trail north of the campground.

From Hoodsport, WA turn west onto State Route 119 (from Highway 101)and drive 9 miles to the junction with Forest Service Road 24. Turn left and travel 100 yards. The entrance to Big Creek Campground is on the right side of the road.

Perfect weekend

It is both close to Lake Cushman and close to town. It’s clean and easy drive through.

Perfection!

We stayed in site #53 for two nights and nearly had the campground to ourselves. This is dry camping at it’s best. With almost no other campers here, the silence was amazing. Most all sites that were large enough for RVs seemed quite level. There is a great deal of privacy between sites and ample potable water spigots. The bathrooms are a bit spaced out so if you aren’t self contained, be prepared to walk.

There are great hiking opportunities right from camp which was great for getting the dogs some exercise.

Mountains, Rivers, Forests and Lakes!

What more could you ask for in a campground? This one is located just off of lake Cushman, follows along the creek which is super fun to walk along, has a great rainforest feel, and is also within a 30 minute drive of one of the most amazing hikes of my life. Definitely make reservations or get there early, we had a hard time landing a spot but snagged one last minute. Most of the spots we saw were very decently sized, only had a few neighbors, really great spot! Toilets are just pit toilets, so come prepared for that and definitely bring hand soap

Great relaxing location. Really close to lake Cashman. Campgrounds provide plenty of space for groups of 8-10. Very clean and beautiful location for summer camping.

One of the best east side Olympics campground

This was one of the first areas we explored and keep coming back to it. They aren't open all year (typically May to October) but it is well worth it in the summer! We found a nice secluded and quiet spot with larger than average spacing to set up our large tent. The spots have a nice campfire ring and table that sit among the trees. The bathroom was a pit toilet but we have found that they aren't bad up hear. There isn't running water in the privy but they did have water for the campers. The road in is all paved and there is supposed to be a camp host although when we were there, no one showed up. The cost is a bit pricey for us at $20 but still better than the local state parks. As far as hiking there is a nice 4 mile loop and a nice ascent to Mount Eleanor. The 4 mile hike is one of my favorites so far in the region.

Stellar Basecamp for South Olympics Exploration

Near Lake Cushman and not far out of Hoodsport off Highway 101, this easily accessible campground is away from the summer craziness that afflicts so many campgrounds in the Olympics. That said, it's still very close to the big boat-friendly lake (just a few miles to the south) and Staircase, which is an amazing entry point into Olympic National Park.

The surrounding forest is lush and gorgeous, the campsites fairly spread out (there are 23 sites for tents, trailers and RVs, with the usual amenities) and as an entry point to outstanding hiking it's first rate. My crew hit the short trail that circumnavigates the campground and then hooked up to the Upper Big Creek Loop Trail, which climbs into the forest, features some nice bridge crossings and affords views of Mount Ellinor (you can connect to the Mount Ellinor Trail, too, if you're super ambitious and ready to go big!). Big Creek roars steeply down through part of the trail (under a few bridges, that is!) and then skirts its namesake campground.

Big Creek Campground is definitely a stellar basecamp for exploring the south Olympics area, which abounds with trails, climbs and fishing spots, and I'd highly recommend you giving it a shot.

Nice respite from crowds

We camped here on a Thursday night-- got in late and Staircase was full but Big Creek had tons of space available. Great campground, well spaced sites, very clean with new facilities and spacious picnic shelters (the shelter lights don't turn off however, so that was almost a problem). We got a site on our own private loop! Plenty of bathrooms and water spigots around. We had a great time, and experienced no bugs! The only downside was the tent spaces are all in fine gravel beds, so not the softest.

Peaceful wooded campground near Olympic National Park

We stumbled upon this campground by chance and were quite happy to have done so. We came early in the morning and were able to get a tent site (first come first serve $20/night) before setting out to explore the Staircase area of Olympic National Park. The campground hosts were super friendly and gave us great advice on where to go in the area. Our tent site had a fire pit with grill, picnic table, and nice gravel parking pad. The spots here are well dispersed and set back in the woods for the most part so they felt very secluded and peaceful. We didn't spend a ton of time around the campground and this was just a one night exploration base but overall it was clean, offered good basic amenities and was very quiet and tranquil.
