Sand Hollow State Park Campground

About

State Park

With its warm, blue waters and red sandstone landscape, Sand Hollow camping is Utah's newest state park is also one of its most popular. Boat and fish on Sand Hollow Reservoir, explore and ride the dunes of Sand Mountain with an off-highway vehicle, then camp in either the full hookup westside campground, or stay close to the action and ride your OHV from your site to the dunes in the new sandpit campground. Geography: A favorite destination for local off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts, Sand Mountain provides 15,000 acres of perfectly sculpted dunes. The red sand is an incredible backdrop for Sand Hollow reservoir. At nearly twice the size of nearby Quail Creek Reservoir, Sand Hollow offers boating and other water recreation in a spectacular setting.

Recreation: Sand Hollow already one of the most visited destinations in the Utah State Park system, with recreation opportunities for nearly every user from boaters to bikers, and OHV riders to equestrians.

Facilities: Three campground areas ranging from full hookups to standard camping.

Nice staff

Smelly bathrooms, loud dune buggies all day and evening all around. Because of a lot of rain we had to change from the primitive to Sandpit campground because Primitive had become just mud, and without a 4WD it would have been impossible to park. Staff was super flexible and helpful

Space WS29

This is our second time here, It’s a beautiful spot. The campground is on a hill, the spaces at the top have the best view, the lower spaces are below the level of the reservoir so don’t have a water view. Space WS29 is in the west side campground which has full hookups and paved spaces with picnic shelters. The other campgrounds are dry but are closer to the water. This space had a great view but had stairs down to the covered Ramada.

Always beautiful

You really can beat the red sand and blue water. Stayed in the lake view campground and they were the nicest showers I’ve ever been to at a state park! Perfect time of year, was here during an atv gathering, it was fun watching them zip around.

Absolute waste of time

Tried to make a reservation over the phone only to find the office was closed. Finally was able to get ahold of an actual person at the office who told us there was availability and to pay when we arrived. We showed up and we’re turned away as the campground was full. Asked for reccomendations and she gave us one other state park in the area, or a highway pull off. Showed up to the other park and it was completely closed with no attendant in sight.

Spacious with wide open skies!

The thing we like most about Sand Hollow is the space between each site! Far from feeling on top of each other. During the time we spent there thankfully it wasn’t too hot because the lake had the swimmer’s itch going on. So we enjoyed our campsite during this visit! But we have stayed previously and enjoyed the water. Our first night had a lot of beautiful lightening in the far distance and was awesome to kick back and watch! The campground is very nicely kept and the facilities feel clean and well maintained and each of our sites has had its own dump station. The campground is close enough to town you can grab a meal if needed and close enough to Zion to drive over to for a hike!

Out of this world scenery

The scenery is something out of an outer space movie, making you feel more like your on a distant planet of bright red sand, black mountains, and crystal blue water.

This is a great place if you are looking to combine fun in the water with 4x4ing in the sand. This is not the place for quiet solitude, there are a lot of camping groups out here, looking to have a loud and rowdy time.

I stayed in the dispersed primitive camping. I thought I had found a quieter place away from most of the big groups. However, out here people are used to camping right next to their neighbors, so within a few hours a caravan of huge diesel motor homes with super long trailers pulled in within 5 feet of the bumper of my truck. Walking the area, this happens a lot. But, the people are super friendly and made sure I had a clear exit for my vehicle.

I drove through the camp grounds. One is close to the entrance with full hookups and level hard packed parking areas. The other is directly across from a pedestrian only beach. Both are nicely laid out, with typical spacing for a state park.

Put toilets re abundant, as are fire rings and picnic tables. There is a cute beach side store for any odds and ends you might need, a quick bite, or to rent off road and on the water toys. This is truly a wonderful family get away!

Make sure to mind the signs about staying on the road. There are designated trails you must take until you are out in the sand dunes. I saw two different groups trying to get vehicles unstuck that had dug in to the sand up to their frames by going in undesignated areas. The sand is super deep and very soft.

The vegetation is mostly low, with very little protection from the wind. There are larger trees right on the waters edge. If the wind picks up, you will find out if your rig is air tight. I had a pretty thick layer of red dust everywhere in my pop-up A-Frame. But, it’s light and soft, so nothing felt gritty… again another example of how this place is out of this world.

Campground on reservoir, lots of ATV uses come here.

We stayed here for a few nights in the Sandpit campground loop.  Most of the campers there had ATV's.

The bathrooms and showers were good.  Clean and plenty of hot water.

There is also a West campground loop that caters to RV use more but it gets filled up fast.

It is a decent location for visiting Zion and other national parks and St George.

Overall, we were not excited about this campground, but it was adequate.  We had water and electricty hookup.  Many sites do not have electricity and people used their generators.

Nice. Bathrooms were clean and smelled ok. The individual showers had great water pressure.

The downfall was on our 2nd night we went to town and when we came back at 9:30pm the gate was closed. We had to park at the gate and walk to our campsite, as well as walk back the next morning to retrieve our vehicle.

Google information said it closed at 10pm, but turns out ‘winter’ hours it closes at 9pm. (I later discovered this was printed on Window hanger we were told to post in our front window and on the camp map they had given us.)

Soft red sand for days

The sand near the lake was fun to play in for my family building sand castles and also relaxing. We hiked around the lake and found the cliff diving and fishing coves. I like that there are more private areas if you look. We also did the dune buggy tour ride and I am so glad we did! The water was a little chilly in May but we went out to our knees. We both got swimmers itch so beware. I let the employees know a few days after. Just remember to shower right after getting into the water. There are showers right near the lake. It was a beautiful view.

Nice campsite. It was a bit cool when we went, not too busy - which is the way we like it.  The campsite itself was nice but it could get a bit loud with all the ATVs zooming past. If you're interested they do have rentals and the park is well maintained by the state.

We stayed at site 3. Nice view of the water. We did find a giant scorpion limping past so be aware.

The dog and the kids had a lot of fun at the beach.

Amazing state park

The sand is orange which it’s breathtaking not to mention soft as can be. The water is warm like a bath. The sun rises and your in a place of perfection when the sun goes down your tired as can be but you had a day of wonderful adventures: if you have ATVs they have a lot of great trails and off roads available. The campsites are just a short few steps to the water and they have covered areas as well as barbecue grills fire rings and tables you also park your vehicle right in front of your camp spot they do have some areas with hook ups for your RVs but make sure you reserve ahead of time because the spots fill up quickly because this is a great location to fish, jet ski, kayak, paddle-board, ATV and really anything you could ever imagine. When we came we rented a Jetske it was about $200 for all day super fun had a really great time I also noticed while we were jet skiing they have a scuba diving area which was pretty neat there’s so much the state park offers here at Sandy Hollow. we set up camp and had a great day wasn’t too warm the weather was just right and when we started packing up I noticed some little spiders that didn’t affect us all day maybe they were just looking for shelter but super freaky when you’re wrapping up and you see all these crazy spiders honestly that was the only thing I could actually complain about this place was a wonderful Place I definitely recommend wearing water shoes because some of the areas where you’re stepping into the water have branches and leaves and other stuff so you just wanna make sure your children’s feet and your feet are protected. other than that this place is amazing and we love it so so much

Perfect Site!

This has to be one of my most favorite state campgrounds thus far! Warm, blue and clear waters, red sand and red sandstone landscape all around. Location is convenient as there is a Walmart around the corner and St. George is not too far. There is not a bad spot in this campground. We've stayed Westside Campgrounds in Sites 4,6,7 and 15. All were great and had good spacing between the next spot over so you really have your space and privacy. The bathrooms were clean and the hot shower stalls were also clean. Campground hosts and rangers were all welcoming and super helpful. All the sites are a short walk to the water and it is gorgeous! Great for kids and adults. Nice and quiet campground and very clean all around. Each site has an area for a tent pad and came with a covered picnic table. Most sites are pretty leveled and well paved. There are sand dunes across the other side of the park along with the water rentals and the Sandpit Campgrounds. The beach is on the side of the Sandpit Campgrounds. The Sandpit Campgrounds have a few sites with hook ups but I'd only recommend it if you have your OHV to play with or else it'd be noisy and dusty. There is also a little restaurant on this side too. Book in advance up to 4 months because this place is a gem.

Absolutely beautiful

Pros -

  • The views are amazing.
  • Almost no light pollution. You can see so many stars at night.
  • Walking distance to the lake/beach
  • The beach area is gorgeous with lots of smooth sand and cool red rock formations.
  • There is a restaurant in the park that has decent food.
  • They have a place the rent sea doos, boats, UTVs, etc. Although I read that they are very particular about charging extra fees, and that the equipment is old. I won’t judge this review based on those comments because I did not have personal experiences with this.
  • It appears that this is the place to be for riding trails. There are so many off road vehicles running around it’s unbelievable. I wish I would have done more research ahead of time and enjoyed this about the park while we were there.

Cons

  • The cookies we bought at the restaurant had mold inside of them. They were quick to refund the money, but that entire restaurant is run by teenagers and they literally said nothing to me when I showed it to them. They just counted my money and handed it back to me.
  • No one was wearing a mask at the restaurant during this pandemic, and they were not taking it very seriously.
  • The park closes at 9 and you have to be inside the park before it closes. They will lock you out.

Overall, I wanted to rank this park high because it’s a phenomenal park. The biggest issues were at the restaurant and it doesn’t appear to be affiliated with the park.

Nice lake, lots of UTVs

Spacious State Park campground with water, power and gray-water hookups. Every site had a picnic shelter and nice views of the surrounding desert. The reservoir itself, though small, had a lot of boat traffic but was refreshing to swim in. This area is a 4X4 paradise, so expect to see lots of quads and nice-by-side UTVs racing around the place. For us, it was a quick stop to top the tanks and drain the grays and for that, it was perfect.

The only way to the camp ground is through the front entrance which they close at 10. If you arrive before 10 but have to leave to get something after 10, don’t expect to get back in. They lock the gates and put spikes on the exit so you cannot reenter the park. I wasted my money booking here because I ended up getting locked out of my camp site.

Beautiful Lake & comfortable space

There are a couple options for camping in Sand Hollow SP. We stayed at the Westside grounds with FHU. We really enjoyed our stay here as there’s plenty of your own space with neighbors behind and in front rather than side-to-side. Our site was mostly level with a grill (that was closed to use due to fire risk) and a shade structure with a picnic bench. The grounds were very quiet at night during our stay. We stayed in late June and the temps were hot so it was nice to have the lake nearby for swimming, boating, kayaking, etc. Swimmer’s itch is real but only affects a percentage of people. Thankfully, we weren’t affected. We drove to the other side of the lake to find a quiet spot to spend the day. Shade is at a premium, so bring your own. The dispersed tent sites around the lake seem nice and private but please pack out what you pack in. We carried out some garbage strewn at the site where we spent the day. Bathrooms are intermittent and nicely maintained. The lake can get crowded but we found it’s easy enough to find a private spot. The temps were near 100, so we were grateful to have the FHU at our site, though evening temps were very pleasant and we slept with windows open. Can’t wait to return with some shade, rafts and a SUP!

Sand Hollow State Park

Sand Hollow is a beautiful man made lake with bright red sand and clear waters. This park allows for motorized and non motorized boats, off road vehicles, rentals, camping and dogs.

There are very limited spots by the water to camp, and fires are only allowed in specific fire rings. Outside firewood is not allowed. There is also an entrance fee to enter the park, National Park Passes will not work here.

There are nice day use areas, and areas designated for camping. Tents and RVs allowed, although most access roads are covered in thick sand. I would not recommend taking a low clearance vehicle. There is also a small restaurant for food and vault toilets for use.

You cannot camp around the entire lake. The back portion is fenced off, only allowing half of the lake to be occupied. I chose to camp as far away from the other campers by the backside of the lake. It was a very beautiful, sandy spot right by the water. However, it seemed like the other people staying at the park had no sense of respect or personal space. We set our tent up around 2:00pm and we constantly had ATV's, families with dogs off of the leash, fishermen etc walking/driving right through our site. This continued even through the night until quiet hours. Light and sound travel very well over this lake, so someone drunkenly singing with their buddies across the lake sounds like they are right next to you. People are driving their cars at all sorts of hours blinding you with the reflection off of the water. There are Park Rangers that drive around but don't seem to do anything. There was litter everywhere hidden in the sand. There are a couple of trees and bushes that provide some shade but I would recommend bringing a shade tent. There are also a couple of metal tables with attached chairs at some campsite locations.

This would be a beautiful location to visit for the day with your family. I would not recommend camping here overnight unless you don't enjoy personal space, respectful neighbors, quiet hours or humming RVs.
