Georgetown Lake

Overview

Jim Hogg Park sits on the north side of Georgetown Lake in the Hill Country of Texas, about 25 miles north of Austin.

Boating is the most popular way to enjoy the lake, and a boat ramp is provided for guests. Fishing is excellent in the area, and the lake contains Black bass, White bass, Hybrid stripers, White crappie, Channel catfish and Flathead catfish, but its most known for its abundance of Smallmouth bass. The San Gabriel River Trail is a 26 mile rugged trail winding through dense juniper forest, hardwood bottomlands and prairie grasslands. The trail wraps completely around Georgetown Lake via the dam and is open to both hiking and biking. Hunting is available for for small game like dove, waterfowl, rabbit and squirrel, as well as white tail deer. Hunting is by permit only.

Facilities

Jim Hogg Park has 142 reservable campsites, including five large group camping shelters, and convenient amenities like flush toilets and showers are provided. Picnic shelters are also available, allowing for large parties, cookouts and family trips.

Natural Features

Lake Georgetown is a reservoir on the north fork of the San Gabriel River in central Texas. The dam was completed in 1979 to provide flood control and water supply for the nearby community of Georgetown, and now provides countless recreation opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.

Nearby Attractions

The nearby town of Georgetown offers gas, groceries and more. The historic downtown square district has shops and restaurants, and concerts and events are held on a regular basis. Additionally, Austin is located just 25 miles from the lake, offering countless tourist attractions.

Spent a week in Georgetown ,tx ACOE park . Big park 148 sites , we are in spot 148 , next to the entrance . Park is an hour outside of Austin if that . Not bad but the sites are on top of each other pretty much , one after another not much real estate between sites . Lots of Deer , and some good trails . We came for the Longhorn game and stayed a week . I will stay again

Beautiful campsite on the lake

Close to Austin, Lake Georgetown will never disappoint. The campsites are clean, ours was next to the lake. The day/night we stayed the wind never dropped below 18 mph, so we didn’t do much outside. The dump station was very easy to access from both directions. A definite go to again place.

Great Place to Camp

We really enjoyed camping here! Although there are a lot of campsites, they are pretty spread out. Each site has a covered pavilion, which was really nice. The bathrooms are good camping bathrooms. We just wished there were more trails to hike on! We saw a few deer run through our campsite during breakfast!

Jim Hogg Campground on Lake Georgetown

The campground is divided into 30amp and 50amp sections. Many sites in the 50amp section are level enough for a class A coach to get level using automatic lifters. Some require additional levelers.

There is a lake front section but most are not level and best suited to trailers.

Each site has water and electric with a group dump.

Nice campground with spacious lake sites and good hiking

This is a large campground with many sites, some of which are even double sites if you're camping with friends. A decent number of them are lake front and all have a cement covered pad for the picnic table. The park has access to the 26 mile Goodwater loop hiking and mountain biking trail that goes around the entire lake. The trail is very rugged for bikes. The boat traffic on the lake was pretty low so it's a good place to take a kayak or canoe. The main downsides are the pure number of campsites in one park and the fact that there's only one dump station for all of them!

Very clean quite camp

Great campground. Everyone was appropriately spaced out. We were able to see tons of deer and even a little fox one morning. There is swimming by the boat ramp but no beach, it is a rocky area but the kids and adult had so much fun. Water is beautiful. This is definitely my tip list local spot for us.

Great stay

Enjoyed our stay at the park, good sites with shade, a grill, fire ring and covered shelter. Park hosts were great,  very friendly and helpful. Walking the dogs in the morning saw several grouping of deer, as people came out, they would run into the wooded areas, as soon as we passed, they would come out again. Unfortune but our trip was cut short to a family emergency, but enjoyed the time we had. We will return; had too many plans for the area from zip line to the caverns and walking the downtown square

Great spot, clean and quiet.

Pros: Beautiful lake views, lots of space between sites.

Cons: Dump station is at entrance of park and park is fairly large to haul a portable dump tank.

Friendly and rustic

The camp hosts here were great! Super friendly and very very helpful. The campground was really nice and the views over the lake were beautiful. We stayed in site  61 which was very unlevel. We had to use six blocks on one side and four on the other just to make our front level with our back. Our neighbors had similar issues with leveling out. There are definitely more level spots so just be mindful when booking. Unfortunately, you can’t really tell from the photos on the website.

There is a grocery store less than 10 mins from the entrance and lots of restaurants around as well. The trail around the lake is 26 miles long and can be accessed from just outside the gates. I would recommend walking over the dam. The views are amazing. Would definitely stay again and already scoped out the best spot for our 36’ fifth wheel 😁

Beautiful sunsets

I have stayed at this campground several times. The campground is well-maintained with spacious sites. Many of the sites are wooded. Each site has a shelter with a concrete base. The sites have water and electric. The shower and toilet facilities are OK but not great. The site that I had most recently had a beautiful western view over the lake and I enjoyed several beautiful sunsets.

Simple and Easy

Me and the wife went on 06/18/2019. Right near a nice clear lake (no sand, you can swim but bring swimming shoes, sharp rocks). This seems to be primarily an RV site, it comes with an overhead canopy that provided a lot of shade, under the canopy was a wooden park bench, a sort of breakfast bar type thing attached to the canopy. Few feet away was a BBQ pit, a fire pit, a driveway for 1 single vehicle, a pipe for water, and an electrical box that had your regular RV connections as well as your regular household plug in. If you're getting a spot near the lake, be prepared for other guests with kayaks to walk through your camp to get to it. Bathrooms are provided, zero ventilation so it gets hot/cold with the weather. Showers are provided as well. The bathrooms were dirty as expected just accommodate for that. If you're walking through the camp at night bring a flashlight it's very dark. Minimal bugs during the day but once nightfall came there were TONS of junebugs. We car camped here and it was amazing.

Jim Hogg Park + Lakeside Views

I would actually award this park 3.5 stars. Jim Hogg Park is located on the north side of Lake Georgetown. The park and its facilities are a bit dated, but if you're looking for a quick and convenient getaway for a few days it is worth checking out.

There are campsites that fit most RVs and campsites for tents. Almost all of the campsites are within easy walking distance to the lake. The park gets consistent visitors through the spring, summer and fall. There are fewer visitors in the winter. There are a huge number of campsites and I've never had a problem finding a spot, however during the peek seasons it is recommended to reserve a site in advance. It seems that many of the visitors to the park are day trippers.

Each campsite has a shelter, picnic table, grill and campfire pit. There are a couple of restrooms spread around the park, but I would say that one might have to walk a while to reach one. Many of the campsites have one or two trees, but many sites have no shade other than the shelter. There are trees and forest surrounding the campground.

One thing that makes this campground an easy place to camp is that it is only about 40 minutes from the city of Austin and 10 minutes from the city of Georgetown. Along the road that leads into the park there is a Randalls Grocery store where one can find groceries and supplies.

There is a nice 26 mile hiking trail called the Goodwater Trail that circles around the lake. There are also ample opportunities to fish in the lake either from shore, along boat docks or from a boat.

If you do find yourself with a campsite along the lakefront, be warned that during the summer you will likely hear ski boats cruising around the lake.

Jim Hogg Campground + The Goodwater Trail

The Jim Hogg Campground is located on the north side of Lake Georgetown. The Goodwater Trail passes by the campground and is often used as a stopover for people hiking the 26 mile loop. The reservable developed campsites have a cover, table and a fire ring. There are RV sites as well. There is not much collectable firewood in the immediate area because most of it has already been picked up, but there is collectable firewood a half mile outside the campground down the trail. If you’re hiking around the loop you might want to collect a few logs on your way into the campground and carry them in. The campground has easy access to the lake, but I would not say that is the best location to access the lake.

We have stayed at shelter sites and regular sites and all have been nice, clean and well maintained. The bathrooms are always clean and have hot water.

its on lake Georgetown, but to get in the water, you’ll need to go to Russel Park, but it is beach-like access. There are a few picnic tables over there as well.

SiteThis time we stayed at site 86, but we have stayed at a couple of the shelter sites several times.
