We were camphosts for the 2023 season.I can't say enough on how Kelly, Steve and his entire family makes sure your well taken care of..they added a second dog park for the little pups, renovated 5 site to give a better camping experience in those sites. If you need something they are on it..they have the best options for camping.. cabins, teepees, barrel kegs, tent, electric tent, w/e 30 amp, 30 amp full h/hu, 50 amp f/hu, and big rig sites..they have worked endlessly to supply you with the best experience. The campground is not your typical parking lot camping..each site is individually unique..it was made around hills, tons of shade trees, and rock formations. Each site is as level as possible. Restroom are individual with shower sink and toilet.. they are very clean. There is a fort playground for the kids that's fantastic. There is a pavilion that can be used for family gatherings. Several reunions are hosted every year..You will have local wildlife visit daily including deer and turkeys. In the spring the new fawns and chick turkeys are born and are adorable. They are centralized to all attractions..perfect location to everything. The several clients that have been repeat customers for years..staying for 6 to 8 weeks..that speaks for it self..everybody loves it. It's very quiet, the store has everything you need. Michelson trail is approximately 1 mile away which can be walked or ride bikes the 114 miles through the mountains. The hospital is 1 mile away. If your in the area, and you need an excellent place to stay..at the best price.. this is where you want to be.. It's very family friendly including your dogs and cats.
Perfect location for our visit to Custer State Park
Absolutely loved our stay here!! Our check in was easy and the staff super pleasant. This is a family oriented campground with a great play area for the kiddos. Our tent site was spacious, level and clean. As well, the bathrooms are huge and very clean which is always a nice bonus. I will 100% stay here again if we’re ever in the area!
Nice campground
Stayed for 2 nights to explore Custer State Park and Mt Rushmore. Nice size campground (not too big) with wooded sites. Friendly hosts. They have a dog park and 24 hour laundry. One of our party is in a wheelchair and there was one accessible shower. Had to bring own shower chair though. There is a camp store where they sell firewood and a limited selection of other camping needs. I would normally give 4 stars for the limited ADA bathroom access, except that they were very accommodating in choosing a site for us that would be easy for a wheelchair to get around and were so friendly overall. Also it is very quiet yet convenient to see the local sites. I would stay here again.
Great location for local attractions
Quiet, except for road noise having site on the main road. Well maintained park, no campground Wi-Fi at site 63 and 64. Our site had water but no pressure so comes out as a trickle. Filled our fresh tank and used the pump which was fine. Close to all the main attractions in the area.
Unique campground
Nice, helpful people run this campground with a variety of sites: RV, tents, covered wagons, hobbit-like cabins in a lovely shady spot. Playground, store, laundry facility.
Great Family friendly campground
Beautiful grounds. Well kept. The laundry room was neat which for me was a big plus. A small store on site. The owners are friendly. Full hookups available. Driving distance to all the black hills attractions you want. Great place.
Camping with a view
stunning tall pines with lots of deer and wild turkeys walking thru the campsites. full hookups, covered wagons for rent if you don’t have a camper or tent. large playground and a dog park. laundry facilities and very nice bathrooms.
Great location for Custer State Park and surrounding area
Very friendly owners. Gravel pads, most have some grassy areas. Turkey and deer walk thru. Has small clean dogpark. Town of Custer has large clean dog park within 2 mile drive. Stayed in 53 FHU 3 nights then moved to 45 W/E as we made reservations late. Both faced away from the center of the campground which was nice. Nice laundry . Okay bath/ shower..didn't use but looked ok. Great campground for folks with dogs and for super easy access to town of Custer and the State Park.
Much to offer
There are some tent sites with a weather protecting pergola with electricity. The highway is visible but more good than not about this camp.
Average campground
Not level camp site, expensive camp store, had to move camp sites because they have booked ours. Good location to Custer state park.
Great place to stay
Our site was nice and flat with full hookups. There was a hill on the one side that faced the road but we never had a problem with noise. Deer roam through the campground often. There’s a little playground for the kids. The staff is very friendly as well. It was also very quiet at night. We didn’t notice any bugs during our stay either
Welikit
Great private camp in pines, excellent access to Custer and surrounding areas. Very close to Michelson Trail. Sites are well maintained and provide some privacy.
Quiet spot to stay while vacationing
This was a nice campground to stay at while vacationing. The wash house is wonderful. It is a building broken down into several private bathrooms (a toliet, sink, and shower in each room)! Absolutely the best. I wish all campgrounds were like this.
Our favorite place to camp!
We have stayed here at least twice a year since 2013. We love the clean sites and bathrooms. The hosts are extremely friendly. Our kids are obsessed with the playground area. My son rides his bike up and down the hills and has a blast.
Best wash house ever!
It may sound funny but it’s well known that if Mama ain’t happy then ain’t no one happy. But the wash house made Mama happy. Very large and very clean with private showers. There was a sign on the doors indicating they were closed for cleaning every afternoon from 1-3 but that never interfered with anything. The whole campground was very clean and the folks running things were super friendly. We are tent campers and our site was very small and dirt only but we did have a covered shelter and electricity. I would have give those up for one of the grassy sites down the hill with no electricity. We were pretty close to the highway but it wasn’t too bad at night. Our fellow campers were all amazingly friendly and we visited with someone each evening as they were walking past. We came up to ride bikes on the Mickelsen trail which was fantastic and if you are a cyclist you should definitely check it out. We could have ridden from the camp to the trail but had to purchase or pass so drove into Custer and parked right by the trail. They had a couple of projects going on while we were there...adding electricity to some of the other ten sites, building some really cool barrel pods for sleeping in...so they are upgrading and making improvements to an already really great camp ground. Would have given 5 stars but the small dirt tent site, the fact that one of the restrooms was out of paper towels for two days and they ran out of ice over the weekend for two days lost them a star.
Black Hills Perfection!
We stayed for two nights and we really needed longer. Large private showers, wonderful playground for kids, gorgeous setting!!! The campground is covered in towering trees and is so picturesque. Spacious sites and friendly hosts. We loved our time at Fort Welikit!!!
Really Nice !!
We loved the campground and it’s location !! It has Everything you will need!!
Good family campground for tent/RV
Love the location of this campground; it’s close to Custer in case you forget some supplies or snacks and close to popular spots like Sylvan Lake and Needles Highway. The plots are a comfortable size. Lots of room for activities.
No go for tent campers.
We thought we had found a great place to stay. Made a reservation. Paid the $25 deposit did some research and looked at the reviews. Let me tell you how let down we were.
We were driving up to where it was and we could see from the main road our tent site. We thought hey maybe it's one further back and not right next to the road. So we go and check In and we are right next to the road.andnot even just a road to get to the place but like a main road right off the town houses across the street busy road. Also there little plots are small, like very small. Big enough for our 6 person tent & SUV? yes. After that however, not much room for anything else. Super small fire pit and our neighbors were right next to us. Like so close we could hear them chatting. Maybe if you have an RV go for it. If you are tent camping though I wouldn't recommend. We paid the $100.00 cause they are very strict about refund and well let's get honest they do give them even though there was a ton of tent spots left. Even after we knew we weren't getting out money back decided to forfeit the $100.00 and find a different camp site. So many better camp sites. More space, and not right off the main road where you can listen to cars all night and have lights shining in at you. If you really need a place that has a shower, play ground for kids and a dog run then go for it. However if you are like us and like to camp and don't really need a playground or a dog run and would like some space fr ol m your neighbor camper then please find somewhere else. They have so many just take a drive or Google other sites. Your inner Camper will thank you. In the photo, the trees right there are after a 2 lane road the fence is the edge of Ft. Welikit and other edge of that road. Way too close.
Quiet, friendly and clean
This is our favorite place to stay in the black hills. There's wildlife to be seen daily. The owners are wonderful. Bathrooms are immaculate! The spaces are shaded and a great size. Our kids love playing in the kids play area and the dogs enjoy the dog run!
Ranger Review: OOFOS OOlala Slide Sandal at For Welikit Family Campground and RV Park in The Black Hills National Forest Custer, SD
Campground Review:
If you are looking for a family and pet friendly place to camp while visiting the Black Hills South Dakota area, look no further!! We started planning our family trip 6 months ago, and booked the Fort Welikit Family Campground and RV park based on reviews we read online. We wanted to be in between Custer State Park (Kids choice) and The Badlands (Dad and Moms choice)
There are 100 sites nestled in gorgeous tall pine trees. The tent sites are located on the south two loops, and the Tipi and Cabins sites are mixed in with the RV sites. We stayed 9 days in site 20 that is a RV 50 Amp Pull through site. Check in time is 1:00pm, and check out time is 11:00am. **Very important to know: The trees are fighting the Pine Beetle, so they DO NOT allow you to hang anything like clothes line or hammocks on them. ALSO they DO NOT allow you to bring in out of the area firewood. They do sell approved firewood at the office for $4.50 for a small bundle. The family style bathrooms were located just behind our site, and were cleaned daily. (If we ever stayed there again we would ask for a space on a further loop, as this was a high traffic area!!) The offer a laundry room with washers and dryers as well, but bring our quarters as a wash cycle was $1.75 a load, and the dryer is .25 for a 6 minute cycle. The added kids old time fort play area and the dog park area were well kept and there was plenty of room to play ladder ball and washer toss. We would highly recommend this campground to anyone looking for a family/pet friendly area. If you are looking for solitude, this would not be the place for you.

Product Review:
As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time. I tested the OOlala Slide Sandal from OOFOS Footwear https://www.oofos.com/ that I won in the West North Central Review Contest in June. Let me begin by saying I was a little nervous when I thought about what size to order (I am an 8 & 1/2 Wide ladies) I went to the website, and immediately drawn to the OOlala Slide Sandal. When I went into the description, under the "pick your size" button is a handy little "sizing" tab. When you click the tab it reads "If you normally wear a whole size: order the same whole size OOFOS. If you normally wear a half size: Order a half size UP for best fit. (MEN: Order a half size DOWN for best fit) Problem solved!! I ordered the sandals on July 1st and they were delivered on my doorstep on July 5th. Talk about FAST shipping for a holiday week to boot!!
When I took the sandals out of the package I was very impressed with the shape and styling of the shoe. I put them on and know that this was no ordinary pair of slip on sandals!! The arch support immediately took pressure off the ball of my foot, and the cushion put a springy bounce in every single step I took. I couldn't wait to take them on our 10 day family vacation to see how they performed!!
Day #1 we hiked the Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak). It is the highest summit in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. After our 7 mile hike, I couldn't wait to put my OOFOS sandals on and let the recovery begin!! I wore them while showering and walking back to the campsite. My feet did not slip or slide in them, and they were dry within minutes!! The next day we headed to The Bad Lands, and I wore them all day long. They kept my feet comfortable and energized while putting on another 7 miles of walking!! After returning home from our vacation I have worn my OOFOS gardening, fishing, and even washing my SUV. I am 100% hooked on OOFOS!!
