Charleston KOA

Quick 1 night stay Aug 31, 2023. Fast check in. Nice info packet upon arrival. They even had a free kitchen trash bag in it. They pick up trash at your site. Paved, not completely level, but close. Had enough room to stay hooked up to 36' 5th wheel, plus park a car sideways in front of truck. Just like all KOA's the place is well maintained and spotless restrooms. All employees kind and happy looking. Nice dog park. Had a 30lb propane tank filled at what I would consider a decent price. There were other amenities, but we didn't use them. A little bit of a noisy area, but we've been in worse. Would stay again.

I gave this koa 3 stars because it has the least amenities out of all the koas we have been to. It is still a very nice park.

The bathrooms were clean but nothing special as far a presentation, that goes for the park as well. The cell phone service isn’t very good and neither is the Wi-Fi they offer. The dump station area was an ordeal. With odd placement and only one sewer with a cap that just doesn’t seem to open. We didn’t bother looking for someone to ask about it. You might want to get a sewer site if you don’t have another place to dump on the way home fortunately we’re heading to another campground with a dump station. The park is a little noisy with planes and faint traffic but not to bad. They offer propane onsite which is supposedly operating, but they said that about the dump station. We shall see.

The KOA itself and the sites are pretty nice. Outside of the grounds is a trailer park on one side and industrial on the other.

We really like this campground! We have an extended stay here while we wait for our new home to be built. It is clean and close to shopping and close enough to Charleston which is full of history with lots of touristy things to do. The only drawback that we didn't mind, it is in the path of the Charleston Airport and there is a railroad close by. If you enjoy watching Airforce jets, you will see those too. Last but not least you will frequently hear the song of my people 🥰 Emergency vehicles. During the night it is much quieter. The people we met, both staff and fellow campers are all very friendly. Cons: Back-in spots are a little tight to get into Playground not maintained Wooden tables and fences were covered in little bugs Rec center was closed.

Part of the reason that I review a lot of these is because we travel with dogs and I use this to read reviews for other people that travel with dogs.

Typically koas and Red roof inns are go to and we'll go to whichever is the best and if you are going to be in chucktown then you should not stay here it's really far from everything it's very expensive for what it is you can stay at a b&b for this price let a rri

This is our second KOA, to say we are disappointed is an under statement. Very unkept, not mowed, floods on most spots and we have been here for a while. Staff are friendly and helpful if something is needed but don't expect them to do anything without asking first.

We chose this KOA over the one in Mt. Pleasant as we felt it was closer to what we needed. Tent sites are small and some distance from the restrooms. The restrooms are clean but could use some updating. Lots of traffic noise and planes. The biggest turn off was the seemingly run down trailer court that you first see when turning off the highway.

We probably won't stay here again unless it's just an overnight passing thru.

Upon check-in all seemed to be going well...that is as I ignored driving thru the trailer park at the entrance to get into the campground...until I pulled up to my camp site. It was very narrow with and over grown tree on each side of the entrance to it. Luckily I keep a machete in my truck. I spent 5 minutes trimming the trees just so I could try to squeeze into the site. It was very difficult as others were parked along the narrow single lane road as they couldn't fit their vehicles on their sites with their campers. It took about 10 minutes to maneuver my pop-up camper into the site. Then... I had to squeeze my truck in best I could. I then had to trim yet more trees, otherwise they would've been scraping the roof and my awning all weekend. Then... I discovered those on the tent site next to me weren't happy having 1 picnic table so they took ours as well. 

I will NOT be returning or suggesting anyone else to visit this campground!

This is a pretty nice KOA but it is not one that really is a destination KOA. You moreso camp here because you want to visit the local area, not because you plan to spend a ton of time AT the campsite. It was a great location. There is a decent bit of noise from the traffic.

We're locals and visited the KOA to check availability before recommending it to incoming traveling friends.  Due to Covid and no apparent individual working the office, we didn't bother with check-in rather made a quick pass through the closest loop to complete our assessment.  We almost  completed the 200 ft journey to the exit when all of a sudden golf-carting security cut us off at the pass and coldly demanded we leave.  We bit back laughter and bid Officer Fife a good day subsequently deescalating a national emergency in the making.

Our friends wisely chose Charleston County Park over this location.

This KOA is located 30-45 minutes from the city, if you have to be closer to the north area for family or just cause Charleston has limited availability for RV’s , this is the place. We were purchasing a home and stayed here 5 weeks Overall every other campers was considerate and quiet. We had no issues with anyone running a business or being rude. The staff is not overly friendly but not unpleasant . The amenities are limited, not a KOA for kids. The pool looks nice but was closed for the season. The playground area is very small with one gym set. A horseshoe pit looked overrun with weeds as was the basketball area. The roads are very tight for larger RV’s and trailers. The wooded sites are close to the interstate and you can here traffic constantly also the wooded area is a little marshy which doesn’t help with the mosquito control. the traffic to turn left out of the -ark can be a nightmare during rush area , I recommend right turns only . The biggest con for me was the laundry , it is open air and surrounded by trees and foliage which blows into this area. The tile is ripped and a hazard , no trash cans and no place to sit. Also it is shared with the trailer park adjacent to the KOA ( same owner) A note is posted that weekends are for KOA tenants only but many workers use the facilities. We have a dog that we kept on leash and never had an issue with management telling us he couldn’t be .

Camp in a very busy location outside of Charleston. Not very big, but cool if passing through.

We were put next to a camper running an auto repair shop out of his campsite. The rules we were given upon settling here clearly state that campsites are to be maintained in"a safe and orderly manner and... keep it camping." The rules further state that any and ALL external items must be"camp related(grills, lawn chairs, coolers, bikes.)" Since when are using pneumatic power tools, power saws and hammers"keeping it camping or camp related?" This mobile auto repair shop, as his business is so named on his trailer, operates about six feet from the bedroom in our camper where we sleep. The other day when I complained the management told me they would"talk to him" but they never showed up to talk to our neighbor and he continued hammering and drilling away from 7am until 10pm that night. Apparently the campers surrounding this guy have no rights; only the auto shop owner has rights here. There is a reason auto repair businesses are only allowed to operate in industrial zoned areas. I never realized campsites can be operated in these environments alongside an industrial business. It's disappointing enough for the local campground manager to allow one camper to trample the rights of the other campers, but when the KOA corporate response is to hide behind broken rules and passing the buck to the local manager, that's pathetic. Maybe the managers are intimidated by the picture of an assault rifle with threats to deter visitors that this guy has posted in his window. Not many nationally known companies would allow a local manager to sully their name and run such a trashy operation, but it appears KOA is an exception. Not only is the noise ridiculous, but this campground has not had functional public toilets and showers since before we got here and will not have them operational in the near future. This place also has the worst wi-fi reception of any place we've stayed. We are full-time campers and if this is how you treat your guests, KOA will be dropped to the bottom of our list when seeking future accommodations.

I agree with the other reviewer. My opinion is very strong about this place but will try to stick with facts. If you have to stay overnight due to traveling through, this would be adequate. A lot of the campers are there for work and are more permanent. Not super family friendly of a campground. Even though we visited at the beginning of December, it appeared unkept. Unsure what it would be like in the spring/summer. Dirty is how my husband and I described it. Most of the “roads” are paved which works out nice for a stroller. The dog park is a fenced in area only with swing, trash can and picnic table. They do not allow dogs to be tied up. In their words “must have an owner attached”. We have a 90lb Lab and 4 lb Yorkie. During the day, if the weather is nice, the dogs prefer outside on most occasions, as are we. The lab is not aggressive in the slightest bit and doesn’t bark without reason or at all. We received a warning from the campground via a note on the door for him being outside on a short lead to be within their rules. Never mind the yappy other dogs in the park where owners stroll through multiple times a day and allow their dog to poop on your campsite without cleaning it up and other better hidden sites with dogs tied up. The biggest part of the warning that frustrated me was that I wasn’t told directly. Instead I saw the lady comping through the site and asked could I help her (she stuck the warning on the door) even though I was clearly there and she saw me multiple times going to the laundry, strolling around with the dogs, etc. Approaching me directly about a rule violation or a complaint from a fellow camper (as I assume is what sparked the warning), etc would have been much more preferred. The playground is small but in good working condition and has an infant swing which is nice. Laundry area is sufficient and easily accessible. Some camp sites have old picnic tables and look run down but you can tel they are slowly switching them out. We stayed at a deluxe site (C15) with a fire pit, swing, outdoor seating, etc right on the end of a row. This appeared ideal until we saw all the foot traffic that came by with their multiple dogs (sometimes as many as 2/3 per person). If there has to be a next time, we would select the deluxe spot a little further up from C15, towards the middle of that row. We also believe some the the foot traffic came from the neighboring trailer park. The general area of the camp ground is very accessible to grocery stores, restaurants and convenience stores. There is a lot of noise from the highway, airplanes (which my son and husband love) and workers getting up early (5:30am) to go to job sites. During high traffic times, it can take 30-45 min to get to downtown Charleston so be aware. For our next trip to Charleston we will plan more in advance and book early at a different place.

Felt like this was a location where several out of town workers camp - just seemed less family friendly. It’d work as a pit stop but I wouldn’t go back again. The Mt. Pleasant KOA is a much better bet for the fam.

It’s in the middle of town in North Charleston so it’s near lots of store but it is loud and the spots aren’t very shaded. But it’s much cheaper than staying at a hotel and the campground is run by young adults who have no idea what’s what but the place was clean and very family friendly

We wanted to stay close to Charleston and be able to visit the beach, but all the beach campgrounds were full, so we found this KOA. It wasn't a bad drive at all to get to downtown Charleston or any of the close beaches. It was so easy to get there, right off the interstate, and check-in was a breeze. We were one of only a few tent campers. Most people were in RVs and Campers, but the noise was minimal after dark and we felt like we were out in the wilderness. Our dogs even came with us and enjoyed the dog area. The showers were kind of small for my liking. I always felt like I was about to touch the wall when showering, but other than that, everything was great.
