Buckaloons

On our last trip, the bathrooms were filthy and frequently out of order.  We’ve been camping there for nearly 50 years and have seen a steady decline since the government outsourced the management of the campground. Sad.

I stayed at Buckaloons in July 2022. We decided to launch our kayaks shortly upriver in Warren, PA. Buckaloons turned out to be the perfect mid point for us to get off of the river and camp for the night.

We come here at least once per summer. It is very family friendly, pet friendly and just beautiful. If you kayak, you can drop in up in Warren and come in right at the campground. Ice and wood available on site. Dollar general close by just in case.

You really feel like you're camping when you're here!  The campsites are large and not crowded on top of each other.  There are woods between the sites which increases privacy and keeps it really quiet.

Buckaloons is right on the Allegheny River and there's a boat ramp onsite. If you're a paddler make sure to visit Allegheny Outfitters just up the road in Warren and get a river guidebook.  

Given its location on the river this is a great place to make several different runs down the river. You can start or end at Buckaloons and make many different combinations of trips to suit your fancy. 

There is a shower house onsite. Many sites are electric and there is a dump station on the grounds. Pet friendly.

Worth the visit!

Stayed for the 4th of July. Peaceful and well maintained. Hosts are extremely friendly as well. Plenty of space on each site for whatever you want. Only downside was no playground (apparently it was torn down after the onset of Covid) and the showers were a bit of a walk - both “issues” are easily overcome. Will definitely stay again.

Nice little campground on the Allegheny River, hosts were friendly and facilities were clean. River was running way high from all the rain so we choose not to kayak, but a lot of others did.

We spent 5 nights here and it was perfect. It's just myself and my toddler. There is a Walmart not too far away if you need supplies but they do sell both ice and firewood here in the campground. If they are out, ask and they will get more for you. The staff are really, really friendly. 

Ice is$2 per 7 lb bag and the wood is$10 for a pretty big bundle. I have attached photos. 

When I booked I was told that because of Covid-19 there would only be vault toilets and no showers, so I was beyond surprised to see that everything was up, running and smelling super clean. I struggled to find a place open during Covid-19 (May 2020) so again, super happy. My toddler is 3 and everything is very family friendly. There is a lower and upper loop. Make sure you check Recreation.gov to make sure the site you are booking has what you need. We were at the top loop,#39, very close to the bathrooms and entrance. 

The campground doesn't have wi-fi but I was able to use my phone as a hotspot. I trade stocks for a living and the connection was good enough to do that:) I have Sprint. The spots are all spacious, I'm very surprised to see someone complain about that... and my spot in particular(again, 39) is more private than others with more trees separating me from other spots. The road is one way throughout the loops so there's no big traffic. Lots of kids riding bikes, adults walking and chatting. Tons of friendly dogs. The trail is also very pretty and makes a good loop.

Wasn’t sure what to expect since it was a nearly-last minute booking, but our site was larger than most we’ve booked at other locations. We were in spot #39, which is near the end of the loop. Finding fresh water outlets was a challenge since they were not easily labeled, so we ended up circling the loop a second time to fill up the fresh water. We realized on the way out there was a fresh water hookup at the dump station with plenty of space to easily park and not taking up space in the loop. Electric was 30A and our site was not level, but we were able to find the right spot. VERY shaded and the host had plenty of firewood. The campground was not too big so the kids could easily ride around in their bikes and still be close enough. Internet service was great. We had 4 bars of Verizon LTE and music stations were out of Warren. We’ll probably book again next season.

Nice campground on the Allegany River. This is a good river to canoe, kayak or tube on. We walked the campground and noticed that most campsites seemed to be a fairly decent size. There is a really nice walking path that encircles the campground and follows the river which was pretty neat to do.

A nice boat launch into the river. Playground could use a little attention. Bath house is nice and clean, nice water temp and pressure. Sites are larger than most. Cash or check only if you walk in
