Champoeg State Heritage Area

This was the first campground I went to using this app and it absolutely exceeded my expectations. The tent sites were clean as well as the bathrooms and showers. Super peaceful and the park hosts were very nice and accommodating. Will absolutely be coming back!

If you show up late for a Yurt rental, things will get hectic real fast! The information on their website conflicts with their actual practices, which is exactly what the Ranger (Kyle Parker) told me, so don't expect a refund or anything like that if you show up and your rental is locked. 

It seems this place is run by people who barely work, so when something comes up, they're grossly unprepared/ incompetent.

This is a great place for a relaxed bike ride. Wooded trails, not too hilly. Rangers are super friendly, facilities are clean. Looking forward to going back!

We had a great spot in B-Loop. Close to the restrooms and also close to the off leash dog area. We thought it was very quiet and everyone in the loop was friendly. We will definitely be back.

This campground is dripping in green in the spring!  It has a very park-like quality with manicured landscaping and very nicely laid-out sites with plenty of space in between. Each site is paved to accommodate RV’s and campers with electricity and water. The bath house was clean, the water was hot, and they had almost enough towel hooks (can we ever have enough?). 

The park offers hiking, cycling paths, huge picnic areas and a disc golf course, in addition to boat landings for a canoe along the Willamette River. If you want to get out of downtown Portland for a quick and easy weekend away, this might be your place. There are also winery tasting rooms within a few minutes drive.

The park’s proximity to I-5 means that you can still hear the traffic but not so much that it disturbs sleep. Nearby towns of Wilsonville and Newberg have all the usual services. We don’t usually camp at state parks because with our solar powered system, we never need to plug into an electric hook-up, however the nice shower after a few days on the road was really worth it.

Great pull thru site and on the end of the loop. It had a big shared grassy area in the middle, big enough that multiple families were out playing games and having fun without getting in each other’s way. The site itself was clean, grass right to the edges of the trailer parking. It’s had a nice, level area for the picnic table and the fire pit was just off of that. Power and water hook ups for out trailer. I would definitely purpose to reserve this site again.

My first RV campground. I purchased my Artic Fox 1150 in Portland and drove directly to this lovely state park so that I could read my manuals and learn how to live in my camper for the next year on a cross country road trip. I learned later that I was a bit spoiled by this first experience. Oregon has done an excellent job with its state parks. Only one loop was open for the winter, but the sites had full hookups and good spacing between sites. I stayed in four different sites over two visits in the month of December, and they were all great. The rangers and camp hosts were all great as well. There was a one acre plot set aside for dogs to run and play….a big plus for me. I was also able to remove the camper from the truck and run errands. I found out later that a lot of places will not let you do this.

This is a great spot for a quick weekend outing if you live near Portland.  Nice hike along the river and interesting history to learn about.  Not much privacy at sites and the cabins are small but the campground is well kept and easy to get to.

Well, we have lived in the Salem area for 15 years and have always said we needed to camp here but could never get a campsite because it was always booked on weekends. Retired this year and we had weekdays open and discovered why this is such a popular camp. This is one of the nicest campgrounds we have ever stayed at. Grounds are beautiful with lots of room between campsites. The hiking and bike trails are great with lots of interesting sites to see. If your into geocaching there are lots to find. We camped at Champoeg State Heritage Area in a Fifth Wheel.

This was our first trip in our new pop-up camper! This was a great campground to try it out in. The sites in A loop are definitely closer together than B loop, but we liked being close to the playground. The bike trails were fun and the fall leaves are gorgeous right now. I was surprised that it was practically fully booked mid-week in Oct!

This camp grounds has walking trails, biking, fishing, big park area. In the A loop camping area it is clean however the sites are open to others.

Big campground with lots of amenities but still a friendly feel and nice spacing. Well kept and clean facilities from bathrooms to dump station. Would definitely come back!

Came here for one night to meet a friend who was camping here and was pleasantly surprised. There wasn't a lot of privacy, but my site was nice and level with a picnic table and fire pit. Electric and water at the site and a very nice, new dump station on the way out. 

Did a walk along the bike path--lots of people out biking. Very pretty and cool on a warm day. Didn't see too many kids. A very nice off-leash area for the dogs. Didn't make it down to the river or the historic site.

Beautiful rv park. Big spaces, pull through and back up. Few sites have sewer but some major upgrades are happening to add more & improve dump station. Great for bike riding. Nice playground for kids. We always try to stay in B loop, tends to be a little bit quiter crowd. Frisbee golf nearby and paved trails all over!

Great historic park with no issues with hookups in the RV area. Spring and summer can be a bug challenge so bring lots of insect repellant!

It sure has been beautiful out. Dog friendly Rv and tent camping. Kids play area. Super nice group camping spots. Loop B is where it’s at. Nice spaced out camp spots in Loop B. Unfortunately we stayed in Loop A due to needing a 30amp plug for our RV. Loop A camp spots are a little close together, though people were respectful. Nice places to hike and play disc golf if your into that. We camped in a 21ft RV spot had full hook ups, easy to back into spot. We would definitely camp here again.

Champoeg has a little everything. GREAT biking trails that are kid friendly. There lots of historical sites around the campground to enjoy as well. Loop B is highly our favorite because it is smaller and more private and close to the river. We’ll go back year after year. Our kids had a blast!

A nice campground, no WiFi and no T-Mobile service though. Close enough to Portland to visit the City when needed.

Try the Oregon Strawberry Shake at Burgerville. Simply amazing.

It fits right in with most state parks. No sewage lines except for a few spots that are almost always taken.

People are great, Park is easy to navigate. A few spots in A loop like A-7, A-21,23 used to be tent sights so they aren’t at your typical “RV Angle” and tougher for long rigs to get into.

Grass, streets and sights are all extremely well maintained. Worth the visit!

I just drove through because i was in the area.  It was not a campground for me.  It only had a few tent sites from what I saw.  Mostly just huge RV's.  It was very open.  I like much more secluded places.

So much potential being right on the Willamette River, but unfortunately there is basically no view of the water. We had a rough visit that I’m sure was an anomaly. We had a change of itinerary that brought us to Woodburn and had to arrive with no reservations. There were sites available (after Labor Day) so no problem. Were were told to “pick any unreserved site” so we did so. Got unhooked, leveled, and fully set up, then went to register for the night when the ranger told me that the site was reserved. IT WAS NOT TAGGED. So, we had to pack up and move. Total bummer. Beside that, the park is unwatered and was just dry and unattractive. Upside was spacious sites in B loop, but we just had the view of a dried out field. Paved sites, level, with plenty of electric/water sites. I wouldn’t stay here again unless it was in the spring.

Love to stay here when all the other campgrounds close. Nice hiking trails. The rangers are very nice. Beautiful scenery. Only downside is some of the people who stay here make it uncomfortable for others and destroy the bathrooms. But other than that I'd stay again.

There’s cabins and yurts if tent or RV camping isn’t your thing. Close to water for.

Lots of cool things to do, bike trail that goes along the river and a really cool play area for the kids plus a great big dog exercise area.

Great fishing and biking, the yurts are fun too.

Very nice disc golf area. Easy access to Public bathrooms, and dinning. Great park hidden in between woodburn and Hubbard.

we chose this site based on its central location to points if interest we wanted to visit while in Oregon. we didn't spend much time at the site, except for dinner and to sleep. it was quiet and the onsite staff was friendly. no complaints. very quiet.

Champoeg State Park is on the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, and a great place to camp if you want to do a long biking getaway. The campground is pretty full service for a state park. You can buy ice and firewood onsite, and there is a small store that is a short walk away. There is also a children's playground and lots of bike paths.

What Champoeg is lacking is atmosphere. Since you're in the valley, the campground is mostly just flat land with very little tree cover. You'll definitely be able to see your neighbors whether you're in the tent or rv area.

Biking the loop to St. Paul is a fun countryside ride. The location is also pretty accessible to wine country.
