Big Modern But Nice

My family only got to stay here for a night while traveling. But it was very nice, in a modern state campground kind of a way. The sites were spacious, flat, and fairly private. There was plenty of room for riding bikes around, including a paved path to the lake. One that I would go back to.

Wholesome environment, Mayflies galore

I had a fantastic and totally welcoming weekend at Maumee Bay State Park with my dog. First time taking him camping and I was so appreciative of the facilities at the campgrounds & the park - I was able to focus on making sure he was comfortable instead of worrying about anything else!

Campsite neighbors were very respectful - lots of RVers and large family groups. The park store was clean & efficient and the park itself offered coffee & donuts every morning for a dollar. Very sweet!

One item of note is that there are sooooo many mayflies around - flying, landing on you & your gear, and oftentimes covering the ground around the park. Totally fine if you’re not shy of bugs, but something to be mindful of.

Ohio Gem

We spent two nights here on our trip to Michigan. We were quite pleased with the campsites and how large they are. You don't feel like you are close to anyone because most sites are surrounded by trees and shrubs. If you are looking to stay more than two nights keep in mind that there are only electric hook ups, so you have to fill your fresh water tank before you set up. Water fill stations are conveniently located throughout the campsite. Don't forget your bikes for this campsite! There are miles of paved bike paths throughout the campsite and a short ride to the lake.

Large Park and Campground

We followed our RV GPS right into Oregon, OH, and the park. There were plenty of signs to Maumee SP and then signage through this huge park to the campground(CG) area. Check in was quick and easy at the gate. There’s plenty of RV parking out front and you walk into the gate office building to check in. As we were on electric only, we asked about water and were told we could go to the dump station or in our CG loop. We choose the dump station where there are 2 potable spigots, one on each side of the 2 dump lanes station. In retrospect, we were glad we filled at the dump station because the spigot near our site was broken and we would have blocked traffic. As a side note, the spigot was fixed the next morning. We then drove to site 137 with 50/30/20 AMP but no water or sewer. Back-in was easy with the site being large enough for our 39’ 5th wheel and F450. However, we did park a little horizontally to ensure we were well off the road as this was the 4th of July weekend. We choose the 119-144 Loop, site 137 because of the nice water view off the back of the site. Many of the sites in the CG, and especially in our loop have shrubs or hedges between the sites providing great privacy. What we did not know was that 137 lacked shrubs on the yard side thus, we had a clear view of the camp host site next to us. Also, the loop's power station was on our site. We noted after our arrival that sites 136 and 139(also with water view) were the most spacious and private in this loop. Those two sites were among the CG’s top 10 sites in our opinion. We had 4 bars on Verizon and plenty of OTA channels. Due to trees within some sites, satellite could be iffy. Within the CG, two loops share a central restroom/shower house. The shower house near the activities shelter also has a small laundry. The first loop has the CG’s full hookup sites but only sites up to the turn-around, i.e. 1-11 and 21-29; the sites in the cul-de-sac part of the loop were electric only. We also noted that the best or most private sites tend to be on the backside of the turn-arounds in each loop. We enjoyed the multiple bike and walking trails plus the golf course. We took our dogs for a walk on the Mouse Trail that’s a grass and dirt trail that goes around the entire campground area. We enjoyed the trail although some spots were muddy due to recent rain. However, we were surprised how close the western side of the CG is to a subdivision and realized this was where all the firework noise came from over the 4th of July weekend. The subdivision is about 150 to 300 yards through the woods away depending on your site. There are also two large beach areas near the lodge and golf course that we did not utilize but a lot of people did and there was plenty of space available. If we were to stay here again, we’d probably stay on the eastern side loops away from the sub-division.

Winter Camping

This is our 4th time to this park but the first trip in the off season. Only one campground loop was open, but they did have a shower house and bathroom open, only 1 potable water pump was open and the dump station was open but the black tank flush water was shut off.

There are no staff around so if there is a problem you have to get in touch with ODNR.

The trails were still maintained but some sections were closed with posted signs that it was hunting season.

It was still a great trip and one of our favorite parks. I believe all or most of the sites are 50 amp. We have Verizon phone and had great coverage at the park.

My favorite State Park so far!

LOVED this park.  There is a great amount of greenery between sites, bathrooms were good.  So much to do you don't have to leave the park:  great bike paths / hiking paths, a lodge with restaurant, cabins, golfing, kayak rental, beaches, tennis, basketball.  Really, almost anything you can think of.

SO MANY BIRDS - definitely a bird watchers paradise.

NOTE:  if you have time, the Toledo Botanical Garden was free and very much worth a trip!

THIS is how campgrounds should be!!

This campground is so thoughtfully planned out, it's amazing. Every site is separated by a line of brush/bushes, maybe trees, so that you aren't jammed up against your neighbors. Some sites have shade, some do not, but at least you have shrubbery. The bathrooms were clean and some had doors you could lock yourself in- I appreciated this safety feature.

I'm sure it gets crazy in the summer, but I was there during the week in September and it was nice and quiet. There is an awesome marsh trail, a beautiful beach on lake Erie, a hill you can climb up for great views, marsh trails and more.  You could easily spend 3 days here and not get bored.

I'm almost reluctant to review this because I don't want it to get too crowded! Shh! Don't tell anyone!

So Much to Do

This park is huge. There is so much to do here, we didn’t leave the park at all! Just a short walk or bike ride to Lake Erie via a paved path. I highly recommend taking a bike, as there are so many trails and paths to ride throughout the park. The marshy swamp area was neat to see, there were several frog species, snakes, and we even saw a muskrat. The park is very educational, they have a nature center where you can learn about the local flora and fauna. There was a doe and her fawn that we saw almost daily in the park, as well as other deer. A resort is adjacent to the park that has many amenities if you prefer not to camp. There are several ponds throughout the park and lots of green space.
While we were there we had the pleasure of viewing the nested piping plovers that haven’t nested in Ohio for 83 years. 4 chicks remained on the beach during our stay, prepping for the flight south. Several volunteer ornithologist kept a watchful eye on the chicks for safety and didn’t mind educating us on the little creatures. The campsites are nicely sized and vary in privacy. All equipped with a picnic table and fire pit. Some sites had a concrete pad under the table but there didn’t appear to be many, just a handful of what appeared to be newer sites. The park held social events, such as an ice cream social and coffee and pastries several mornings. The camp store was impressive, stocking a variety of perishables and even refrigerated items such as lunch meat, cheese, etc. Very impressive park, we will be back and extend our stay.

Enjoyed the spacing and privacy of the sites

Sites are spaced far enough apart and usually with a divider of trees or bushes between sites to give you a little more privacy than most campgrounds. We have a teardrop, so we can’t rely on an RV to provide privacy from the sites next to us. Very well laid out, although a bit of a hike to the bathhouse if you are far down the spur. Take that into account when picking your site if you aren’t self contained.

Clean, spacious, fairly private with lots of activity options

We've camped at Maumee Bay State Park twice and enjoyed it both times.  The campground is part of a larger resort complex that includes a hotel, marina, a nice beach on Lake Erie, a second beach on an inland lake, golf course, mowed hiking trails and - our favorite - about 5 miles of beautiful, paved bike paths.  It's all very clean and well maintained.  The whole place has a welcoming, friendly vibe.

We camped on site 47, electric only.  Very level and spacious paved spot with its own shade tree.  Nearby shower house accessible by well-lit paved path.  Our only problem was a bit of water puddling near the camper/fire pit but it went away after the first night.

The campground is spread out so everyone brings bicycles and also saw a few golf carts.  Very nice for family bicycling!  Saw lots of wildlife on our rides.

The surrounding area is kind of industrial.  We toured it the first year we went (very interesting!) but stayed close to camp this year.

Wish we had booked more nights; we only stayed for one night in our 17' travel trailer with full hook-ups. Clean bathroom with shower was a bit far from our site but the layout of the campground made the walk pleasant. Sites well spaced. Wish we had bicycles to ride on trails and to the beach (bike rentals were not yet up and running when we were there). Immaculate grounds and perfectly groomed beach.

The only thing we dislike is the wait for the dump station.  Be ready to wait on Sundays if that is your check out day.

Quiet. Beautiful.
Lodge on site, cabins too Store, pool at lodge, game room at lodge. Bathrooms, showers houses. Clean and kept up. Each area has one.
Roads are set up with a circle at the end. Drive down them loop around then drive out. Angled driveways, easy to get trailer in. Or back in A and C class easy in and out too. Lakes, beach, canoe, kayak, bikes, hiking, boardwalk, wild life preserve, birders Haven, a scenic hill to climb.
More pictures to come.
They also have Hosts that stay here, and get free camping for helping parks out. Quiet times are observed. Perfection!!!! Wish all campgrounds had this layout.

The trails are really nice and the boardwalk trail over by the lodge is my favorite. The beach area is nice and clean... to cold this trip to swim. Lots of wildlife at this park. We saw deer, raccoons, muskrat, lots of bird species and several snakes.

The camp store was closed due to COVID as was the nature center.
