Great park

Been here before came back because we liked it so much. Sites are good sized compared to alot of state parks good for tent and rv. Cell service is good, bathrooms are older and could use updating but are decently clean for use.

Alum Creek - Nicely Designed and Well Maintained

Alum Creek State Park is a very well designed State park. Its located north of Columbus, Oh just off I-71N. The sites have level pads. The park is very neat and clean. Our particular rv site was an electric only site (L06) but water was just across the street so if was convienent to fill the camper. This was a very pretty campground with boating and water sports as the main activity.

When approaching the campground make sure you GPS is set for the campground and not the park. the two are separated by a few miles and signage at the park to the campground is not clear, especially, at 11:00PM when it is dark.

While were there they had a trivia night which was fun and a free pancake breakfast on Sat. morning which was quite delicious.

For Astronomers this is a Bortle class 4 site with an SQM rating of 21.27. I did not get observe from this site as it was cloudy due to wildfire smoke. Overall we had a great time at the park.

The electric only sites were priced at $33/night.

Very Noisy

Everyone online is constantly raving about Alum Creek so we finally decided to try it out. Initially we had site A9 but when we arrived we realized the main road (55mph) was extremely close and loud. We ended up looking at all of the open sites and picking C3, which literally might be the best site in the park. Even still, the constant road noise and insane amount of small plane traffic is extremely annoying. The fire station across the street doesn't help either. The park seems to be roughly 80/20 mix of small sites to medium/ large sites. Usually my reviews are a ton of positives, then a few negatives. This one unfortunately is almost all negatives. The oddly places bathrooms have no parking, only the two shower houses on our half of the park did. I say oddly places because they are kind of in the middle of the woods with multiple paths going to them. You would definitely benifit by finding these paths before it's dark or you'll be lost like we were. Also you may not want a site with one of these paths if you don't like people walking through your site. Due to looking for a better site and it being October, it was dark by the time we finished setting up. One of the few nice things about the park is how dark it gets at night. Unfortunately, there are barely any signs around the park and the ones they have ahine green in your headlights and are almost illegible. Kind of like the light yellow site numbers on the grey electric box. The park does have many nice amenities like, miniature golf, a large dog park, many trails and a nature center. Down the road is a very large beach, a dam and parks. The absolute best part was the camp store. Literally the nicest people in the world were working here... I'm pretty sure we wouldn't stay here again, especially in the summer when it's probably crazy busy. Especially when Delaware state park is 10 miles away and literally our favorite park in Ohio. The two are complete opposites.

My Favorite OH State Park so far

This is my favorite Ohio State Park to camp in so far. Good ATT coverage, look carefully at length of pad as some are shorter. Lovely beach nice views. Only problem was some street noise and the Trick or Treating and Halloween events first weekend of October meant there were a lot lot lot of cars and people and 1.5 hours with the streets closed for activities.

Peacful & Pretty

We camped as a family if a full service site. The sites are large enough the kids can run around and not feel like they are in someone else’s area. There is a nice park for the kids, mini golf, and the small camp shop was very helpful for some newbies. It was the perfect place for our family to start our camping story.

Nice road trip or weekend stop.

Pros: This place is nicely wooded for shade and privacy. The sites are spaced really well. It feels like true forest camping. The super helpful and friendly staff made check in easy and pleasant, and lots of info was provided. Full hookup sites are available for 45 bucks, and there seems to be lots to do nearby.

Cons: lake had a sign that said the bacteria levels were higher than state standards. A sign next to it said to watch for algae blooms. This man made lake has evidently been damaged significantly by the species that built it. We went in anyways because we had waited all day and it was super hot... but the water wasn't looking real clean and overall it was a concern and a disappointment. This is on the second day of summer so I can't imagine how nasty it gets in late summer. Some road noise and some trains, so not totally quiet.

It is a pleasant place and has a nice feel to it overall. It worked well for a one night stop.

Huge State Park Outside a Big City but You'd Never Know It

Our RV GPS wanted to take us to the maintenance gate about a mile from the park entrance where you check in. Waze, however, took us to the right entrance where there was an entrance sign. Check in was fairly quick and we asked about cancellations for a FHU site. We were offered site B-4, but when we checked it out the site was too small for our 39’ fifth wheel. We went back around to the campground’s(CG) potable water fill up at the dump station, arriving right after the 3:00 PM check in time. The water spigot has a splitter so you can fill on both sides. Later we found that there are brick water fountains that have a spigot periodically throughout the park but they are not marked on the map. After filling, we headed to premium water-view site K-21 that is a back-in 30/50 AMP, no water nor sewer. Alum Creek is a huge CG with multiple types of sites i.e. FHUs, water view, electric only, etc. What we liked abut this CG was that many of the sites have vegetation on both sides so even if the sites are close together you have privacy. We got 5 bars on Verizon and a lot of OTA channels. Due to the amount of mature trees, satellite could be iffy depending on your site choice. There were restrooms and restroom/shower houses throughout the park/loops. We were able to park sideways in our site with wheels on the grass with no problem. From the K loop there was a large path to the lake for fishing, swimming, or kayak launch. Delaware, OH is about 10 minutes away with all the amenities. In the main/old part of town, parking on the side streets is free.

We stayed at site J24 and the only down fall was that the fire ring did not have a grate.

Nice park

Camping was excellent in this park. For a state park the camping was great. Spots were spaced nicely and you have room to stretch out without being in your neighbors sewer pipe. We stayed at B16 and it had no problems with the 37’ RV and tow vehicle. Staff was super friendly and the camp store was very adequate (with ice cream too) 😋. The park close to the camp office was nice and had some great activities including volleyball, swings, slides, a nature center, and mini golf, just to name a few. I would definitely go back to this park without hesitation. Well maintained and the facilities are clean too.

Good Campground

Most sites seem good (from a tent-car camper perspective) / music on Friday nights/ pancake breakfast on Saturday / kayak launch sites / ice cream$2 at the store.  The camp has its own beach, but floats / kayaks are not allowed.

I live near Columbus so I may not camp again, but just go to the park which I hadn't been before.  Near the park = Easton shopping center, Ikea, Polaris Mall, Columbus Zoo + Zoombezie Bay Water Park

A Wonderful State Park

First off we have to say that Ohio State Park campgrounds are some of the best we’ve ever stayed in. Most Ohio state park campgrounds have spacious sites with trees or other foliage between campsites so lots of privacy and a feeling of being apart from other campers. Alum Creek is no different. The ODNR has upgraded a number of the sites to FHU though most are still electric only. Alum Creek Lake is a large reservoir (by Ohio standards) that has excellent fishing, plenty of undeveloped shoreline to explore from kayaks, canoes or paddle boards and a very large beach. Not as many hiking trails as most state parks but you’re not far from High Banks Metro Park in Lewis Center that is a beautiful park with miles of trails along the Olentangy River. We love Alum Creek and will stay again for sure.

CLOSE TO HOME

We usually drive past Alum Creek State Park on our way to further adventures since it’s only 11 miles from home and 3 miles from our storage place. BUT , every spring, we use Alum Creek for our quick ‘shakedown’ weekend. We hook everything up, clean out the basement and get ‘FREEDA ROAM’ ready for the season. Everything at this state park is always ready for locals or for travelers. There are lots of woods for hiking, boat ramps for fishermen and water enthusiasts or just nice relaxing surroundings.

Alum Creek State Park is a beautiful park and great campground just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Columbus and minutes away from attractions such as the Columbus Zoo.

The campground has good sized sites and is wooded throughout with clean bath houses, well maintained roads, and easy access for big rigs.

There is also a very nice dog park in the park including dog beaches with lake access for your pups to swim.

We love this campground and the beautiful lake and appreciate the easy access to local attractions, shopping, and more.

Staycation Vacation in November

Our first time camping at Alum Creek this past week (our vacation for 2020) and we were at site G27, at the end of the cul-de-sac. Our pad was very level and the site was a nice size with neighbors blocked by trees (a bonus). We did have a path next to the site, not necessarily for hiking, but a few kids rode their bikes down it. The fire ring was nice and big with a great cooking grate. Only bad thing thing about it was that it was so high off the ground that your wood would burn quickly. We tried to pound it in more, no go, so we added rocks around the outside to help. We had plenty of room for our ez-up/kitchen and our privacy tent to try and stay self contained. We were really happy with the site and would book it again.

We saw a ton of birds, deer, racoon, cat and even a snake in the campground.

The campground had plenty of trails insides itself including a nature trail for the kids (and big kids too). By our site there was beach access for swimming or kayaking (no dogs allowed on this beach). A playground was up by the entrance - a far walk for kiddos from our site. The bathrooms were kept clean and the bathhouse showers were decent as well. They had the bench inside your shower stall which is always a plus.

The campstore was closed during the week, but I understand they have wood and other items (credit card only). But, you can buy wood right down the road from two houses. The one we went to had $5 bags and $10 bags (exact change only). We saw the park staff daily driving around and the Sheriff a couple of days.

You can even order from the local restaurant and they will deliver it straight to your site - the pizza was delicious!

Beautiful, private sites

This is the proper listing for the campground. The camp sites are spacious and private, surrounded by trees and brush. Beautiful walking trails. There’s also a great mountain biking trail in the vicinity. There’s a small beach within the campground, a bigger public beach a short drive away, hiking trails and campground events to enjoy. The prices here are reasonable, however most sites are booked by seasonal campers who pay for the whole season and leave their RV/set-ups in one place the whole season, so all the choice sites (ie lakefront) are always taken. From what I’ve been told you might be able to get into one if you book the whole season a year in advance.

Beach, Not a campground

The location of this listing is for the public beach and not the campground. The campground is farther north. This beach is really nice at the beginning of the season but the busier it is the worse it gets as the summer progresses. It seems like most of the people who frequent this beach or boat in the lake do not clean up after themselves or their pets. By midsummer the beach is a mess and the fish are dying in droves. It’s very disappointing.

Nice campground

We stayed the weekend at alum creek state campground at site K2. I would have loved one of the other sites that were lake front but this campground seems to stay pretty full all the time. Everytime ive went to book it’s only had a couple spots available. The spot we had however was nice it was set back in the tree line so even though we had campers on each side of us we never seen them while at our site. The site was nice size with plenty room for us. There were lots of areas to get water from however only one we found actually worked which was very frustrating. The bathrooms are in need of updating but not dirty. Their is a camper beach that is decent but a lot of debris washes up from the boats there because it’s it’s kind of in a inlet. We went to the main beach which was very nice and the water. Their are lots of food trucks that set up in the parking lot of the beach on the weekends at least. We had a good time the worst part of our stay is their are lots of horseflies at the campground area my husband got bit three times 😬

This is a huge campground! I tent camped by myself--felt very safe.  Happened to be next to the park host. No choice of where to locate my large tent.  Showers/bathrooms were OK--older facilities.  Wish this park had a laundry facility--another Ohio park I recently stayed at had a fairly new shower facility that included a laundry facility!  Did not appreciate the waste management company emptying the dumpsters at 4:00 AM!!!  There is a huge, lakeside beach that was just packed with people (no social distancing) and there was trash everywhere--not enough dumpsters.  Near to shopping (Polaris), if you are interested.  Will try to get a lakeside site next time.
