Stone Mountain State Park Campground

This campground is well-maintained and in a beautiful location.It’s a pretty clean place with a friendly and personable staff.

First time visiting and camping, really enjoyed how clean and quiet the campground was. Campsite itself was perfect, close to hiking and easily accessible. Definitely will return!

Awesome place! Campgrounds were nice and spaced out, well maintained...we were right by a small stream that you could hear...stone loop mountain trail is incredible! Long and strenuous but all ages were hiking it...homestead was so neat to walk around at the base of the mountain. Only negative is there showers. Very frustrating....you have to push the shower head to get water...great way to conserve but it gave you no time to enjoy the water. Made it hard to shower and it came out blasting all over the place....only complaint :)

the campground is very well maintained with lots of space between sites. shower / bathrooms are clean. we were in the electric loop. some of the non electric sites are not large enough for even a small pop up. the hiking here is some of our favorites in NC. mountains, waterfalls, old homesteads, there’s something for everyone.

Great trails, and lots to do. Climbing up Stone Mountain was fun.

I loved staying at this campground. My campsite had a lake view and was high enough to see over the tents that would be in front of me by the lake. Clean bathrooms, and friendly staff. A lot was going on that weekend so it was quite noisy across the lake. (Weddings, festivals, Highland Games) i can’t wait to go back.

I stayed here for three nights in early November, 2022. The camp sites are mostly level, well maintained and have tent pads, tables and fire rings. I chose a site that had water and electric hook-ups. The bathrooms were heated, clean and the men’ bathroom had two showers.

Definitely visit the falls, it has a lot of stairs, but it is quite close/short walk, and very worth it! Also, the longer trails have amazing views, including the flora, the distant landscapes, and (chiefly) the spectacular rock formations. 

Also good facilities in general. Am going back soon with a group, to explore even more of this park. Another good thing is how easy it is to access from the Triad or Charlotte, and even from Raleigh it isn't that bad of driving time. An extra bonus is all of the wineries nearby!

Cute little campground. Tent only or RV sites. Upper part of loop A is nice and woodsy. We stayed at site 15, up against a wooded hillside. We had some noisy neighbors but not too bad. Bathhouse was great. Sink for dishes there and a spigot nearby the site. Can buy ice and firewood at the office.

I took a hike up the hill behind this campsite and saw several deer.

You should look at Stone Mountain falls while you’re there. It’s only a 15/20 min hike from parking lot. There are A LOT of stairs to get to the bottom of the falls, but it is very worth it!

nothing special about the campground, facilities were well maintained. this state park is amazing. honestly one of my favorite places we’ve visited. the hiking is awesome. views are incredible. so glad we took this side trip from BRP. we will definitely be back!

We enjoyed our stay at Stone Mountain, especially the hiking and camping.  We stayed on a weekend, and the campground was quiet.  The B loop is nice, with most the sites having ample spacing but not very private.  Great area for hiking and waterfalls.  Restrooms were modern and clean.

Many choices of what kind of site you want and honestly it wasn’t worth the money. Very expensive to get nice level sites. If you choose one of the least expensive sites they are very bumpy and not updated and still cost a lot in my opinion. It’s nice to have things to do on site but they still require a drive and additional fee. The hike to the top of the mountain was short but intense, great view at the top. Playgrounds were beautiful for the kids!!

You just can't beat it. We camped here and didn't even leave. It has so much to do and see. We camped at RV site 40 and I think it's the best. There's a roaring large creek that flows behind the site and a grassy field full of deer beside it. Also we checked out the backpack hike camp spots (5) they're a good hike (1.5 mile uphill) but so beautiful, on the creek, 2 are near a small waterfall. They're spaced out about a quarter mile apart. We went in December and there wasn't many people there at all, maybe 4 other campers all weekend.

Great park with large sites and plenty of space between sites.Bathrooms were clean and we'll maintained.plenty of hiking and creek wading opportunities as well as fishing.also the Blue Ridge Parkway is close by for exploring.

We truly love this campground- it’s our favorite spot!

There are amazing trails in this state park, if that’s your thing.

The bath house on the rv loop is nice and big. They keep it pretty clean. It’s definitely nicer than the bathhouses at many other state parks.

The sites are pretty spread out. They keep things well manicured.

This was a really nice stay, but it was just overnight for us. Took about 20-30 mins off of 77. Site 55 is the best site, but the hardest to get into with an RV. Beautiful views and area. Camp hosts really friendly and helpful. Explored the park in the morning before we left and I know we will be back. Looking forward to staying a few days next time.

This is my go to park to hike. So many trails of all lengths. Historic homestead, amazing waterfalls, hiking, backpacking & climbing.

The campsites are fine. The bathrooms are clean and everything is well maintained... The sites just don't feel very private or well spaced. But the park itself... And being able to stay IN the park.... That is what makes the difference. The hiking trails are incredible, great waterfalls. Some difficult hikes... Some easy. We ended up on a trail that must have had 800million stairs and it still was well worth it.

A bit out of the way but well worth it. Sites are large and pretty much flat. A stream runs thru the campground low in the banks. We had E, W no sewer a convenient dump station. Close to stone Mountain, natural area, not commercial like in GA. It is a beautiful setting, couple miles from a waterfall, 30ish miles from Pilot Mountain, very unique.

I went back and forth on whether I should give this rating two stars or three. In the end, I chose three stars because the mountain itself is so amazing. Geologically this was great place to visit and the trails were well marked and maintained. Beautiful hike. The campground was beautiful but the facilities were run down and dirty. It had, by far, the nastiest park/campground facilities I’ve seen in Kentucky, North Carolina or Virginia this year. I know this park is mobbed on the weekends, but I checked in on a Tuesday and stayed for two nights. The facilities, including the campground bathhouse and the park’s “comfort stations” were dirty, smelly and had bugs in them. The trash in the bathhouse was not emptied in the two days I was there. There was not a single exterior light to the bathhouse, not even something as reasonable as a motion sensor light that would be more energy efficient than a constant lighting option.
Compared to New River State Park, despite the giant Stone Mountain, this was the bottom of the barrel.

We came here as our second ever camping trip and it wasn’t exactly what we were expecting but it was definitely an adventure. It was beautiful and quiet and relaxing. The only thing we were not happy about is the insane amount of bugs in the bathroom. But, ya know North Carolina summers.

We stayed at the Stone Mountain campground 5 nights/6 days, and enjoyed every minute of it. There aren’t many trees between the RV/full hook up sites, but they’re far enough apart that you don’t feel like you’re on top of your neighbor. There is a gorgeous little creek that runs through the middle of the full hook up sites, which made it even more peaceful sitting around the fire at night, and our daughter loved exploring it during the day. The bathhouse was a ways away from our site (53), so we typically rode a bike or drove the truck. This could be problematic for someone with limited mobility, or small children that can’t hold it very long. But it wasn’t really an issue for us. The bathhouse was usually spotless, well stocked with toilet paper, well heated, and not very busy at all. The showers will get pretty warm, which surprised me, and the pressure is pretty good as well. However, you have to push the button down every 10-15 seconds, and the stall is pretty small. They are sufficient for washing off the sweat and dirt from spending a day hiking though. We did a lot of hiking, which is the reason we went. There are a wide assortment of trails, from easy and moderate, all the way to strenuous and advanced. All of them are equally gorgeous, but I highly recommend the loop trail, which takes you by the Stone Mountain falls, then around the base and over the summit of Stone Mountain, and by the Hutchinson homestead. You can also branch off that trail and go to the middle and lower falls, which were also absolutely gorgeous. The summit climb by the Hutchinson homestead is pretty strenuous, but very much worth the views. I’d really recommend taking a blanket and snacks, and resting on the top for a little breather and to take in all that surrounds you. The creek throughout the park is delayed harvest trout waters, which is great for people that enjoy fishing. The creeks are incredibly clear, and so serene. The park doesn’t allow campers to bring in, or harvest their own fire wood, but they do sell bundles at the check in station for $5. The staff was helpful and nice, and the park is very quiet, clean, and family friendly. Keep your eyes open, we saw wild turkey and deer in abundance.

We have stayed here several times with family. The sites are decently secluded. The tent pads are your standard issue gravel and could be uncomfortable if you don’t have a mattress or pad. Wonderful trails and amazing water falls that the kids (and of course adults) can swim in. This is a lesser known state park so get there before it gets too crowded!

Love this park. Internet and phone service available in some parts of the park. Nice hiking area.

My wife and I camped here last weekend. Campground had spacious sites, clean, level and walking distance to Stone Mountain hiking trails. We hiked the 4.5 mile loop trail over the summit and saw some great views. Waterfalls, history, tome with nature. A great spot to relax.

Stone Mountain was a new spot for our family this month!  Just north of Wilkesboro NC, Stone Mountain is on the eastern side of the mountain range that we usually summit heading towards Jefferson and Boone.  

As we pulled in to Stone Mountain, a huge afternoon thunderstorm was brewing, so we were happy to have a chance to set up rain free!  This campground is huge - in fact there are 3 separate loops - each with their own personality and varying amenities.  The visitor center was closed (due to Covid) but we drove through to find our perfect site.  Take a ride around and decide for yourself, but for us - we surely picked the field sites - a bit of shade, while backing up to an enormous field (which had GREAT fireflies!) 

The bathrooms and showers were clean (yes, hot water too!)  Butterflies were abundant and we enjoyed our hike up Stone Mountain.  Good to know - there is a service road just below the summit of Stone Mountain - so if you have a family member who cannot do a 5 mile hike - they can drive to the top and take about 200 steps to see the homestead instead of staying behind!  We love this option for our parents!

Every year this state park and camp grounds seem to be getting more and more popular. We just got back from our second trip from this park within a year. Bathrooms and showers were spotless camp sites clean grass well maintained as usual for this state park! I’m assuming it being 4th of July weekend was why it was extremely crowded on the trails and water falls but for a holiday weekend it was expected. But we were able to enjoy some falls and swimming alone in some new spots we found instead of the most popular ones. This park is one of my favorite trips.
