Letchworth State Park Campground

About

State Park

Located in Western New York state, about 45 miles southwest of Rochester, Letchworth State Park is known as the “Grand Canyon of the East.” Straddling the Genesee River for 17 miles the park encompasses more than 14,000 acres of deep river canyon and dense woodlands. The area was purchased in 1859 by William Pryor Letchworth, who recognized its natural and scenic value. He then granted it to the state in 1906 to be preserved as a public park. The park’s main attraction is the three dramatic waterfalls on the Genesee, which pour over escarpments up to 100 feet high. In addition to the spectacular scenery, the park also offers year-round outdoor recreation, from hiking, fishing and birdwatching to a variety of snow play.

The large campground in Letchworth State Park makes a good basecamp for exploring the area’s many sights and recreation opportunities. It contains 270 tent, trailer and RV sites in eight separate loops. All sites have electrical hookups, and there are water spigots, restrooms with showers, recycling stations and a dump station available. Additional accommodations in the park include camping cabins and the Glen Iris Inn. Visitors also have access to several picnic areas and playgrounds, a swimming pool, sports fields, trout pond, a museum, and nature center. Campsite rates range from $24–$26/night, plus additional fees; cabin and lodge rates vary; reservations recommended.

The best way to see many of the park’s sights is to get out and walk, hike or bike on any of the 66 miles of multiuse trails that wind through the park, and vary in distance and difficulty. The waterfalls are best viewed along the 7-mile Gorge Trail. One of the more unique and exciting ways to see the park is by hot air balloon. Other activities in the park include paddling on the river, nature programs, guided walks, and interpretive exhibits. The park also offers some of the best birdwatching in the state. In winter, many of the park’s trails become snowshoe and cross-country ski routes, and a few are even open to snowmobiles, so no matter what time of year you visit, there’s a way to play outdoors.

Big park with lots to do

This is a big park with a pretty nice campgrouns. The sites aren't huge, but it's nicely laid out. There seems to be a lot to do for the whole family here without leaving the campground. There's a bathroom in every section that seems to be in need of updating, but functional. The playground is huge and there's lots of room for riding your bike around. The rest of the park is huge with a ton of trails and lots to see. Only downside is that the park is so big you really need to drive around to see everything.

Beautiful and accessible.

The waterfalls and gorge had several overlooks to enjoy if you are not able to hike. The campground is on the opposite end of the park from the falls, so it is a long and pretty drive. We enjoyed hiking along the falls trails. The museum had some interesting history, although we were left wondering how Letchwork made his original money. There were lots of lovely places for picnics.

Suzeas Gluten Free bakery is advertised on the map and located in Mount Morris. The owner is a character, and we loved all the baked goods we purchased there. It was another bonus for us.

Nice Campground with Decent Amenities

Visited Letchworth State park in late July 2023. We stayed in loop 500.

The park, itself, is great. Not a particularly "wild" experience. The trails are mostly paved, and there are snack bars and toilets located throughout. A road runs along the south rim providing access to the overlooks, waterfalls, nature center, and visitors' center. But the gorge itself is fantastic, and the trails are pleasant. We liked the nature center, though it was a little small. Staff was universally helpful and friendly.

The campsite wasn't spectacular, but it was solid. The sites are a little close together (you can see your neighbors through the trees), but it was still quiet. They all have the standard fire pit and picnic table. There are central showers for each loop, and we found these to be clean and in good working order.

Awesome State Park

Really enjoyed our 3 nights of camping at Letchworth.  The camp sites are large and spread out.  Bath houses are modern and clean.  Electric hookups at each site and water spigots spread through out.

We camped in the 700 loop with allows pets.

The camp store was great and even had a separate mini farmer's market with fresh veggies and fresh baked goods.

Lots of good hiking and some great vistas.

Great first time camping experience

The site we were at #402 was kinda uneven and sort of exposed as it was almost at a fork. Even the most balanced piece of land was a sloped a little bit. The site was just 1 spot away from the restroom and about 5m walk to the camp store. Camp store had everything a camper would need although a bit expensive ($9 for firewood). Other than that everything was perfect. Many RVs and trailers so restrooms were mostly empty.

Awesome State Park. Grand Canyon of the east. Miles of hiking trails. Gorges and falls. Numerous picnic areas. Newer bathhouse. Only down side would be the cell service, if needed. I enjoyed being off the grid during our stay. There’s a nature center and a visitor center. Electric/water at most sites. Dump station. Helpful staff.

Beautiful, Well-Maintained Campground

A peaceful car-camping campground. There seemed to be foliage between each campsite which created some level of privacy for campers. The bathrooms in the 600 loop were nice and clean.

You can see a photo of each campsite here: https://www.campadk.com/campsitephotos/campgrounds/Letchworth/site/629

Our campsite (629) was fine, but there was an electrical box and a standing dead tree in the middle of our site.  I would probably try for a different site next time.

Letchworth Park was beautiful. We did trail #1 and went to the Harvey Swimming Pool (10 minutes away from the campground) - it was great!

Pleasant State Park Experience

I spent 2 nights here with my teen daughter and 2 little dogs in July. Everyone should visit here at some point it really is the Grand Canyon of the East. It is a well run camp site, no cell service but well-stocked camp store. We booked a last min site in front of a bathroom/shower but it was still very sizeable and quiet. Camp staff cleaned facilities regularly, we not in an updated loop but still found the showers hot clean pleasant. lf you want to check your messages you have to drive to one of the entrances or by the pool, the staff will tell you where you can get service.

Amazing State Park!

We stayed in Loop 700.  New bathhouse which was immaculate.  You have your own shower, own bathroom facility.  Spacious and clean.  Each loop has their own bathhouse.  We had electric with a water spigot right at the end of our site.

Sites were a bit tight to get into, and some not very level.  I could see where if it rains, this campground would be a mudhole.  Lots (and I mean lots) of gnats/mosquitos, but somehow we weren't bitten.

Those "negatives" are FAR outweighed by what you get at this park.  It's just simply stunning.  The woman who works in the camp store (one of the best ones we've seen at any campground) told us to head to Middle Falls at night because they light it up.  It's just gorgeous.

We spent the next day traveling to pull overs, checking out the park from top to bottom, eating lunch at Glen Iris Inn, and just sitting in awe of Upper Falls.  It truly is an amazing state park.

Clean, workers are friendly and helpful.  Again…just be aware of the bugs.

Nice campground

The campground is very clean. Our site wasn’t the greatest (#811) as it was narrow and outside our RV door was a steep drop off making it impossible to use our awning for a seating area. We had 3 days of rain which did add to the issues…the area was muddy so keep that in mind. Power was stable. No water at the site but there are spigots around the loops. The bathrooms are older in this loop but adequate. Cell coverage was great in the morning but by 3pm each day it was saturated somehow.

The park itself is beautiful. Plenty of hiking. I only wish they had a bike lane along the main road. Will definitely go back.

Good Camping inside the Park

The campgrounds are conveniently located inside the Park so easy to get to the amazing falls towards the south as well as the dam in the north. We were in loop 300 which does not allow pets. Decent bathhouses right opposite our site. Our site was a gravel drive with a grassy area containing the picnic table and fire ring. Unfortunately due to rain the day before the grass was extremely muddy which make it hard to get to the fire ring. There was also white a lot of noise from adjacent sites, we could hear everyone's conversations and screaming kids. There was a laundry facility but no dishwashing.

Beautiful place

Letchworth is absolutely stunning. The views are beautiful, however the scenic areas are at least a 10 minute drive from the campground. The park is massive.

There is a huge variation in site sizes. We lucked out and got a large site with privacy and an area for the kids to run around, however the site directly across from us was little more than the gravel pad and fire pit. Some of the sites are right on top of each other. Great for group camping, not so much if you want any privacy.

Only two out of the 8 loops (200 and 700 loops) have updated bathrooms (single toilet with handheld showers in half of the bathrooms). The others loops have older facilities with three traditional toilet stalls and two showers.

We loved our site but would’ve preferred to stay in a loop with the updated bath houses as we have younger children and a tent trailer.

All sites have electricity. Some loops are pet friendly, some are pet free. The camp store has a good selection of necessities, albeit expensive for discount brands. The pool is 4-5 miles down the road from the camping area.

Would absolutely camp here again.

Unexpected Surroundings

In most states, those without falls like Niagara, this state park would be the pride of the land. With three serious drops in as many miles, the Genesse River winds it’s way through what locals call the “Grand Canyon of the East.” Many states try to make such claims, but this might be the closest any come to actually living up to such. It is stunning!

Along the river this park gives the motorist the distinct feel that she is on a parkway, not unlike Shenendoah, or Blue Ridge. Every few miles the winding pavement breaks out onto a few of the ridges and valley below, before ducking back into the forest of Western New York.

The campground, which is about 15 miles from the major falls area, offers what many come to expect from state parks. There are a wide variety of campsites, all reservable online, which can accommodate lots of different types of camping, large RV’s, small tents, and everything in between. Most, if not all, campsites offer electrical and water is available close by.

The bathrooms are practically luxurious by most camping standards, with single-use restroom/ showers available at all hours. The camp store offered a few grocery items, along with cold drinks, firewood and ice in addition to laundry facilities. Within a short walk were many hiking trails, an old-school fitness path, and a stellar playground where anyone under 9 years of age should get a great workout.

But let’s be honest, we’re not coming here for the campground, it’s the rest of the park that makes the drive worth it. So, check it out and get to know this stunning place first hand and be sure to bring a picnic basket.

Hidden gem

My husband and I just got our first camping setup (tent). Letchworth was a wonderful first experience together. The campground can be almost 15 miles from the entrance of the park at points, but we just asked someone at the visitors center and found it easily after that. The restrooms are all well kept regardless of being updated or not and the campground as a whole is very quiet. There are very active raccoons and skunks that have been pretty domesticated, so putting away food is very very important. The skunks also are not easily startled. The only downside was a large group of young guys that were being really loud and obnoxious well into quiet hours our last night, but it was nothing my pair of earplugs couldn’t fix. Also probably wouldn’t have even heard them if we were in a camper rather than a tent. Overall, it was exactly what we wanted and needed. We will absolutely be back!
