Leasburg Dam State Park Campground

Large private spaces. Beautiful desert scape. Lots of small trails throughout the park.

General: Very small (24-site) campground north of Las Cruces. Sites are in three loops and all but six of them have electric hookups. All sites need to be reserved. 

Site Quality: Sites are gravel with a concrete pad; they are generous in size and spaced far enough apart to provide more than sufficient privacy. Each site has a covered picnic table on a concrete pad. 

Bathhouse: Clean and basic. Challenging to get water out of the taps (hint: the far-left sink in the women’s bathroom will give you the most water). Didn’t use the shower so cannot comment on that. 

Activities: In addition to several short trails that traverse the campground, there is one established short trail (Upper and Lower Mogolian trail). The ranger recommended a nearby hike less than 10 miles away that takes you through a slot canyon and then you can hike to a mesa; I highly recommend this one. There are also two small cactus gardens, a playground, and an amphitheater (although I don’t know if any programs were offered). 

Aside from an occasional train, this campground was very quiet; two nights was the perfect amount of time to spend at this campground.

Well. I would have liked to have stayed here as we had reservations. Due to issues beyond our control we arrived after dark and the park closes and locks the gate at sunset. So there we are with reservations and can’t get in so we have to scramble to find something else. But let’s say we did arrive before they shut the gate. We wouldn’t have been able able to go out to eat or get groceries after dark. And if we had to call 911 the responders would have been slowed down by having to get the gate open. I wouldn’t want to put myself in that type of dangerous or inconvenient situation. Totally ridiculous.

Wish we could have stayed longer than one night. Lots of places to explore. Sites are spread out with some elbow room. Would stay here again for sure!

Beautiful location, level campsites. Roads are nice.

Stayed here in late May for two nights. Sites were well maintained and reasonably private. Hiking trails around to check out the area. Bathrooms were clean. There is a playground for kids and a visitor center that was closed during my stay.

We have been living in our airstream for the past month now and this has been my favorite place we have stayed. Nice cement pad and shaded picnic bench with the mountains in the background! It was so cheap too I think $15 a night you can’t beat it. 15 minutes from las cruces and 50 minutes from white sands np.

This campground has clean toilets and showers. A bit windy but you get clean covered shelter with picnic tables and a grill (when available). Plan on visiting again.

We had site 6. Very clean and lots of little trails to walk. Fantastic level concrete pad. Water and electric. Gate closes at sunset, don’t be late!

You can't beat New Mexico State Parks. Water and electric hook-ups for $18. Great views and a concrete picnic shelter to boot.

Well maintained park, clean facilities, and delightful monthly activities with the local astronomical society including live music, refreshments, and stargazing.

Like many New Mexico State Parks, Leasburg Dam offers beautiful views and nice facilities. We have the facilities here to be among the best. We love the adobe shelters!

All in all a pretty nice cg. Not a lot of signs. The ones that were there were a bit faded. Beach was closed..i think lake was dried up.

Perfect little campground. The space was level and we had no problems hooking up to water or electricity. Covered outbuilding with a table and a little shade made for a great night.

The camping spots have a (mostly) level concrete pad to park your rig on, be it trailer, van or tent. We had water, electricity, fire pit and an Adobe structure covering the picnic table. Some spots were a little close which would be great if you were visiting with friends. The restrooms were just pit toilets and a bit warm inside this time of year. The hosts did keep them super clean. The current camp hosts, Bob and Sandy, were fantastic. Super helpful, respectful and friendly. We wish we had more time to explore the park. We stopped over for a single night while traveling down the 10.

Been here for two days and moving sites for our third. Overall, this is a great camping spot for cars, vans and RV. Location feels a bit random driving in, but that ends up being an advantage as it partially secluded the park from outside traffic.

Pros:

• Several pull through sites with partial shade
• Close to I-25, so easy to locate/access
• Clean, well-maintained, including main bathrooms near entrance (these are closest to the Cactus and Cholla loops, both with hookups and pull through available)
• Short walking trails with great views and extra access to back end of Cactus loop, Greasewood and bathrooms
• Sites are reasonably spaced out for some privacy, very quiet during our stay
• Mountain and desert views

Cons:

• No showers, which isn’t their fault (COVID obviously)

We’d been traveling a lot with lots of short stays and we’re looking for 5 nights near Las Cruces to hunker down for a bit. This park is about 17 miles north for easy availability to Las Cruces, but far enough away for some quiet and relative privacy. The only issue was we had two full days of high winds and blowing dust that kept us inside. We used the time to get caught up on a few things. The other two days were spent exploring Las Cruces including laundry mats and a great visit to White Sands National Park. Verizon service was very good. Unfortunately, NM still has the Park Offices closed along with the showers.

Really beautiful park near Las Cruces. Very clean, nice bathrooms. Inexpensive. Pets allowed. Very large sites with a great view of the mpuntains and the Rio Grande.

Leasburg State Park is an awesome place to camp with stunning mesas and clean sites. the Campground is close to the Rio Grande where we played. The Visitor's Center is charming with a book exchange library.

this campground is very nice, lots of walkways with desert flowers to see, on rio grande river, we enjoyed camping here, bathhouses are nice, staff are friendly and helpful
