Rivermouth Modern Campground — Tahquamenon Falls State Park

My family and I have camped here several times in the summer.  We very much enjoy the river and access and kayaking to Lake Superior.  The facilities are well kept and the bath house is clean.

Close to Whitefish Point and its museum, Close to the falls and not too far from Soo if you want to go see the locks.

We stayed in the Pines campground (not the Modern campground). This has the same entrance as the Modern campground but is a road to the left that follows the river bank. It is rustic campground and no generators are allowed. (You can walk to the Modern campground to use the showers in about 7-10 minutes). The sites are located under tall Pines. The view of the river was beautiful.

The modern campground is a pretty nice campground. There are trees behind which hide the loop behind you. There are a few trees between the camp sites, but these don't offer any privacy. All the sites have electricity in the Modern campground. The campground is about 17 miles from the lower falls.

Really enjoyed our stay here. Our site wasn't the greatest, corner lot, but we enjoyed the scenery, solitude, & trails. The whole area is fantastic, I'd like to visit again.

The primitive sites here are even better than the modern ones FYI. I wouldn't hesitate to grab one of those for a couple nights.

The campground itself is nice enough, although some of the sites are small with absolutely no privacy. What made this the least favorite of our campgrounds on our 10 day circle tour was the attitude of the park employees, esp the ones at the entrances. When we arrived, it was 2:10, and check-in started at 3:00. Any other park we’ve been to in our many years of camping lets you go ahead to the site if the previous party has vacated. We were met with “Do you realize that you’re early? Check- in is at 3, and it’s only 2:10!!” We asked if we needed to come back and she barked “No”. Well, if it isn’t a problem, then WHY bring it up? This attitude happened each time we had to go through a gate. Also, the showers were cold at 10 PM. As for visiting the falls, it was a warm sunny day, and the lower falls was SO crowded with people in the water everywhere, that it was one of those “expectation vs. reality” moments. Went back the next morning after 2” of rain, and it was a totally different experience. The best part of the park was the brewery and restaurant at the upper falls.

Right on the River which makes it amazing and a blast. The campground just overall needs maintenance with proper drainage when it rains. We always have a good time here. Definitely look forward to coming back.

This has and will remain my favorite campground in Michigan. Easy access to the Tahquamenon River, bathrooms are always clean and showers all work very well, sites are generally private due to surrounding trees, and the overall campground is small relative to most modern campgrounds.

Great little state park. Small in size but the sites were large.

Stayed on the rustic site 105 at river mouth pines campground. Very beautiful and quiet. It was a Wednesday and Thursday. Water assessable for kayaks

We’ve been coming here for years and it’s always been a great time. We typically get sites on the rustic side along the river. There are some beautiful sunrises. There’s a nice trail right before the organizational campsite that takes you along the river. It has a little bit of a beach and a bench. The rustic side is typically pretty quiet and hours are respected. The modern side looks like the sites are a bit crowded.

We always go after Labor Day for less bugs. The weather is always perfect and camping right on the river is great. We’ve been multiple times and will definitely go back

Reviews can be so subjective, an employees bad day, the crowed at the campground etc.....

Let's start with the campground on its own merits removing all people involved. 

Bathrooms - Centrally located and exceptionally clean and modern with very nice individual shower stalls.

Campground sites - Sites ranged from normal size to no chance for privacy whatsoever. We stayed in site 3, it seemed to be one of the sites with a bit more room.

Ok we arrived at what turned out to be a few minutes before the office closed. The guy working the office seemed to be in a hurry to leave and did not really give us much info on the campground, he just highlighted the available sites and sent me on my way. When we got back to the office, less than ten minutes later, he was gone and it was locked up. So I used the phone service and called my site in. 

As I was doing this another state park employee walks up to the office, I inquire about wood, he says it is not available any longer because the cash drawer is closed out already. I was like can you put $5 on the counter and do it in the morning? No He tells me I need to drive to town and find wood, but does not tell me where to get it from.

I was a bit surprised because we had been camping at state parks in Michigan for a week and had nothing but amazing and super helpful park employees at every park. 

So we drove to town and finally found someone who had wood in stock.

When we got back to the campground we set up camp, settled in and took the dog for a walk. Headed back to our campsite to get a fire going and relaxed for a bit enjoying the fire. After we settled in for the nite, things got loud, people yelling, dogs barking, it was one of the noisiest campgrounds I have ever been in. I am not sure how late into the night it went but it seemed like there were a lot of campsites that got together to party. 

So other then the time around the campfire the stay here really was not our cup of tea so we moved on the next day and most likely will not return to this campground.

This camp ground is amazing. We come here for 4-5 days every September for a canoe race. Easy access to the river for fishing, swimming, etc. 20 min driver to the lower falls were there is great hiking.

Well kept, plenty of trails and room for adventures. The falls are beautiful and 20 minutes from several more falls.

We stayed in site # 29 at the River mouth Campground. It is a beautiful campground and was quiet most of the time. Our site had water & electric, a picnic table & a nice fire pit. The bathrooms were behind our camper they were nice not that we use them.  We drove to the other part of the park I like this campground much better. The other part of the campground is close to the falls & they are beautiful. Root beer falls they call it due to the color of the water. There are many view points you can get very close to the falls.

There isn't much else around but there is whitefish point with the Shipwreck Museum.  It's amazing all the shipwrecks, lives lost & stories behind it all. This was well worth the drive to it. The Edmond Fitzgerald display is there with the bell from the ship, they replaced it with a bell that has all the names of the crew on it.  There is a lighthouse there & several buildings you can go in, really enjoyed it. 

We kayaked the river , went under a small bridge into Lake Superior then turned around it was getting windy. Nice day on the water.

We stayed in site 38, in the Lower Falls- Portage campground. It's an open area which is  shaded. We had 30 amp and access to drinking water on site. Verizon was able to bring in 3G, at best. Bathroom/Showers were about 200 feet from our site. They were extremely clean, even though it was rainy and muddy. As for the rain, our site didn't have standing water, but it was mainly dirt, which was a challenge not to track in our rig. Bring a rug or at least a mat! Nice big fire pits. There is a guy that drives through the park frequently, selling firewood for $5 a bundle. From our campground, it was a short hike, down to the lower falls, store and restaurant. if you make the loop around the lower falls, it's about 3 miles and half of it is through some amazing woods. You can also hike to the Upper falls, that's about a 4 mile hike, one way. But as a reward, there is a Brewery, restaurant, store, big deck with fireplace, at the entrance of the Upper falls. If you truly want to camp to get away from TV, Internet, phones and the daily grind, this place might be for you.

Spots were amazing! Right next to the water, but still had shade. Decent pit toilet nearby as well. We didn’t use the amenities at the Modern sites because they were having water problems

There is easy access to both the Tahquamenon River and Lake Superior. If you plan ahead, you can reserve one of the riverside campsites and just slide your watercraft into the river. You can travel a very long way before you encounter the lower falls, and catch plenty of small walleye. Accidentally, my dog and I went ashore right where there was a trailhead for the North Country Scenic Trail. It looked well marked, though quite rustic, and ran alongside the park for quite a while. The Rivermouth Campground is about 14 miles from the upper falls. We stopped there on the way home. It was OK and real touristy, but we prefer access to the river, so were happy with our choice of campgrounds. It was fully booked so was quite busy, though the river was nice and quiet. The showers and restroom building is very new and modern.

Unfortunately I can’t give this campground the review it may deserve. We tried to camp here In mid- July, but due to recent heavy rains our site was under several inches of water. The campground was crowded and because of the mud, cars were parked anywhere they could to try and not be stuck. The staff were not sympathetic to the fact that our site was under water, and it resulted in our leaving. I don’t mind roughing it out in the rain, but there was no where to put up a tent. We would have needed a houseboat. The Falls were nice but can be enjoyed without camping here. It is the first state park I’ve seen that had a Brew Pub in it. The park seemed overly touristy however with literal busloads of people in and out of the Falls area.

We loved staying at Tahquamenon Falls State Park hiking along the river between the falls was great and it was total worth the extra few dollars to rent a boat and row out to the island. The bathrooms and showers where very clean. Each campsite seemed large enough to stay away from your neighbors.

Tahquamenon falls is a must see... but honestly you don’t need to camp there. It was super crowded everywhere we went, and while we got lucky and got a site that backed into the woods, the firepit and table were right next to the people next to us! The falls were awesome, just wish that it was less packed.

I have stayed at the campground as well as just made day trip visits for hiking. The campground is always clean, quiet, and beautiful. Some sites even back up to the river and make for a soothing nights sleep for tent campers after hiking the miles of trails near the campground. Fishing is not bad either.

There are four choices when camping at Tahquamenon Falls State Park: rustic and modern Rivermouth, Hemlock, and Portage; this review is for Portage. Portage is the most popular campground, due most likely to the closeness to the lower falls. We arrived on a Sunday in September and it was almost, if not entirely, full. The other campgrounds had more availability. Easy access to the lower falls via a boardwalk and then you can continue on to the River Trail leading to the Upper falls (where there was a brewery!). This is a challenging hike but if you go in the summer months, there is a shuttle. There is a gift shop and snack bar with delicious ice cream. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the bathrooms and the shower rooms. Michigan State parks earn extra marks for their recycling: paper, plastic,aluminum, and best of all - propane canisters. I wasn’t sure what “returnables” meant so it might be good to explain. Sites were generous in size but the interior ones did not have any privacy separation, the only reason I am giving this a four star rating. Try and snag an outside site for more privacy.

We has such a great time at this park! The sites were quite generous in size and we felt like we had adequate privacy; we tent, so it’s kind of a must. Of course the main attraction itself, the falls, can be heard late at night, right from the campground; it’s amazing. Do you kayak? It’s a must! They provide a slide/railing to easily Portage your kayak down to the water, and from there, paddle to the island for a different perspective of the upper and lower falls! Trust me!

this is your average state park campground, only you have falls a short hike away. nothing too fancy, but they do offer good programs for kids, which is a plus.

This campground offers breathtaking views of Tahquamenon falls. I prefer to visit this campground in the spring because it is full of tourists in the summer months.

If you love the outdoors and love being surrounded by nature and getting lost in tranquility, this is it! Beautiful, breathtaking Tahquamenon Falls! As beautiful as it is green it is even more beautiful as you can imagine In the fall! This place has it all! There is a lower falls area and a upper falls area to this park separated by about 5 miles. You can drive to either end with a short walk after parking or you can take the North Country Scenic Trail for a relatively easy hike from one end to the other! I suggest wearing secure shoes or boots for this hike. There is a shuttle service available if you decide to hike and need a ride back to the other section. You can rent canoes or kayaks at the lower falls if you desire more adventure than just hiking. The views of the Upper Fallsalls are jaw dropping while the sunset of the Lower Falls is breathtaking. These are the second largest falls East of the Mississippi next to Niagara Falls with plenty of viewing available as well as a 90+ stair climbs and descent to get almost an armslength from the Upper Falls. There is camping availability at both ends of the park. I prefer the lower falls as it is less crowded even though most of the campground is open sites. The Upper Falls does have a restaurant, brewery and souvenir shop. I suggest keeping your gas tank full given you never know where you may end up site seeing and gas stations are not abundant. If you come from the West you will be fortunate to pass through the Moose capital of Michigan in Newberry, but if your lucky enough you will see one of the parks very own Moose. I suggest making a trip North East of the park taking hwy123 East to N.Whitefish Point Rd up to the Great Lakes Shipwrecked Museum. This is somewhat of a tourist trap but a sight to see and abundant information and history. The bell from the famous Edmund Fitzgerald sits in the museum and with Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" playing in the background give you a sense of erienes. If your up for a little more adventure pass up to the Northwest and hit CR 412 and check out Crisp Point Light house. I suggest a 4 wheel drive vehicle as it is a lot of dirt and bumps, but if your into light houses you won't be disappointed with the sight and story of this beauty! There are many more lighthouses in the area but this one is special.
