Overview

Boat Gunnel Group Campground is located in the Daniel Boone National Forest on Cave Run Lake. Widely known for its scenic beauty and varied outdoor recreation opportunities, Cave Run Lake is home to Kentucky's state record Muskie. This 8,270-acre lake is jointly operated and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Forest Service.

Natural Features

The Daniel Boone National Forest embraces some of the most rugged terrain west of the Appalachian Mountains. The forest lies within the Cumberland Plateau, where steep forested slopes, sandstone cliffs and narrow ravines characterize the land in this region. Cave Run Lake is in the Cumberland District in the northernmost part of the forest. The lake is surrounded by the rolling hills of northeastern Kentucky.

Best private area

We end up camping here at least once a year. It is just a short walk over the hill to the lake where we keep our boats tied up to the bank. It is located behind Scott Creek Marina. You will get the occasional hikers coming through the campground as there is a trail that runs through it. It is as private as you can get in the Daniel Boone. We usually have 3 campers with a tent or two. The only problem that we have is that I kept blowing the breaker on the box when I was hooked up alone. It says 70 Amps and I am 50 Amps. We ended up running our hot water heater off of propane to fix the problem. I do have two refrigerators and two AC units. The lot is blacktopped and level. There is a very large shelter with electric and a large fire pit with benches. There is about 10 tent sites. The trails are well maintained. The shower/bath house is clean and as updated as most. The water pressure isn't great and the showers need some repair work. I love this place because you can let the kids run around and play without worrying about traffic.

Beautiful here

This campground is wonderful. The sites are spacious and spaced out. After a week and a half of wonderful weather in kentucky we actually got rain while we were camping here. The area is absolutely beautiful and we would have been bummed had we not had the hot shower here.

After spending over a week exploring the area we know the hiking is phenomenal. you can literally find yourself alone in the woods the entire day and explore a new area every hike. These 2 days we did not have that luxury. Although our previous time has been wonderful as the pictures will show. Sleeping in a van you get in and out wet and while the site and the camping was great our spirits were little down while here. There are plenty of adventure to be had in the area.
