Overview: A stay at Troutdale Campground enables guests to enjoy all the beauty and recreation offered around the Middle Fork Boise River. Weather is usually good from mid-May through late September and is easily accessible by car in good weather, although the road is sometimes rough and the drive can be seemingly long. Checking with the Idaho City Ranger District (208-392-6681) on road conditions before heading out is recommended. Natural Features: The campground is situated along the river and wildlife watchers may want to look for deer and elk. Waterfowl, eagles and osprey are attracted to the river. Recreation: Trail #130 begins nearby, leading to Bald Mountain. Check the Idaho City Ranger District Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for trails in the area that are open to hikers, equestrians, mountain bikers and off-road vehicles. Click here for an Idaho OHV safety message. The Middle Fork Boise River offers excellent trout fishing and good swimming holes. Big game hunting is a popular activity in season.

Directions

From Boise, Idaho, travel State Highway 21 north to the turnoff of the Arrowrock Reservoir. Travel east along the Forest Service (FS) road 268 approximately 33 miles. You will travel past the Arrowrock Dam and several other campgrounds before arriving at Troutdale Campground. The FS road 268 is narrow in places and may be rough. Use caution when driving to your site.

Good For Week Days

Driving highway 21, pass Lucky Peak and making a right after the bridge is the most heart wrenching drive once you are driving along side Arrow Rock Reservoir, one of the most dangerous drives in the country. It's a one lane road off a shear cliff with vehicles going both ways. Best to drive through on a Monday through Thursday. The campground is basic, but I preferred the dispersed camping site adjacent to the river on the grounds. There is some good hiking and backpacking once you get past the small mountain town of Atlanta. Vaulted toilet, and fire rings. The river is great for swimming, and near by hot springs. Animals we saw in the area are Bald Eagles, Meadowlarks Grouse, Whitetail deer, deer, snakes. When hiking in spring and summer wear snake gaiters.

The only ones there....

Troutdale is a small, roadside and riverside campground along the Boise River. Picnic tables and a FS potty are the only services. No water pump. What it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in a beautiful setting by the river. There's a small beach to make excellent river access. And the cliff/hill across the river affords wonderful shade in the later afternoon/evening.
