About

State Park

High in the Caribou–Targhee National Forest, 90 miles northeast of Idaho Falls, Henrys Lake is a stone’s throw from the Continental Divide and the western boundary of Yellowstone National Park. Situated in a wide, flat basin, and surrounded by 10,000-foot peaks, this shallow alpine lake is as popular with migrating birds as it is with local sport fishers. The small state park at Henrys Lake is a great spot for spending a few days fishing, lounging and wildlife watching, or for exploring some of the area’s other attractions, including Yellowstone, Harriman State Park, Mesa Falls, and various hiking, horseback, and ATV trails.

Campers visiting Henrys Lake State Park will find more than 80 tent and RV sites situated near the lake’s eastern shore. Sites are equipped with electrical and water hookups, picnic tables, and fire pits with cooking grills. Some sites are ADA accessible. Campground amenities include flush restrooms, showers, picnic areas. A dump station is located onsite. The park also has a few camping cabins for rent. Dogs are permitted in the park, but must remain leashed. Camping is available from mid-May through mid-October. Sites are $20–$31/night; cabins are $50–$55/night; reservations are accepted.

For fishing on the lake, the park has a boat ramp and fish cleaning station. Yellowstone cutthroat is the most common at Henrys Lake, but there is also a significant number of cutthroat-rainbow (cut-bow) hybrids. Paddlers can launch from the beach area; kayak rentals are available. Wildlife watching from the park’s 3 miles of hiking and biking trails—as well as the lake’s shoreline–can be exceptional. Besides the prolific number of migrating birds, including waterfowl, eagles and hawks, there are frequent sightings of deer, moose, and antelope. The park also hosts seasonal nature programs.

Beautiful park

Staff friendly, view lovely.

Definitely peeved that there is a $30 upcharge for non-residents and they only give discounts to Idaho military. Interesting!! North Carolina should consider doing this since we have BEAUTIFUL state parks too. Do what Idaho is doing to everyone else...kind of sad...would have given five stars if wasn't for this....army vet of 22 years.

Great Views!

The camp spots are paved and nicely spaced overlooking the lake. Restrooms/showers were clean and well maintained. There are a few sites with full hookups but most are water and electric. Watch out for afternoon winds and thunderstorms. Free kayak and life jacket use. The dump station for the park was closed and had been for some time so you’ll need to find a place to dump when you leave.

Lake camping with great views

We stayed here as a one night stop over to rest between Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. It’s on a beautiful lake with Mountain views all around. It’s extremely peaceful out here and east access to the lake for kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing. There is a hiking trail through the park and it is very close to multiple trailheads in the national forest nearby. Only downside is the mosquitoes, but it’s summer so I expect them almost everywhere right now. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is the price. When I selected this site it was $37 but when I put in my info and booked it was over $80. For that price we typically get full hookups, and I never pay that much for a state park in the south.

Amazing Views & Great Yellowstone Base

This campground is situation on Henrys Lake and provides amazing views from the campground. There are trails to explore without going too far. The park is ~20 minutes from the West Yellowstone entry, but nestled away from the hustle of the tourist town. Clean shower house. Super friendly staff/hosts/rangers.

My only negative is it’s $71 a night if you’re a non-Idaho resident.

Overall we’d stay here again hands down!

Stunning views, close to Yellowstone NP

You're greeted by friendly Idaho State Parks volunteers at the kiosk and given a brief rundown about the park including easy to follow directions to your campsite.

There are hiking trails with great views of the lake and wildlife. Bring your camera and binoculars because the bird watching is phenomenal.

The park is very clean and well maintained. Each RV site has electricity and shared access to water or individual water depending on the site. Each RV site is paved and has a fire ring. The sites are very nicely spaced.

Caddis Loop sites have water and power and 8 sites have sewer, but half or more of the sites are not level. Adams and Blue Dun loops have power, water, trees and most sites are level.

Restrooms and showers are cleaned daily and restocked throughout the day.

Impressively, 99.9% of campers do a good job picking up after themselves. Trash is picked up daily at 930am at your campsite. There are no dumpsters.

The campground dump station is out of service for the 2021 season. There was a notice warning about that on the reservation website. The park has 8 sites with sewer connections that cannot be shared, so plan accordingly.

The resident park ranger is very pleasant as are the resident volunteers that do the bulk of the park maintenance and cleaning.

Unaccommodating upper staff

In summer 2021, the campground’s dump station was out of order. While there are a few full-hookup sites in the park. The staff would not let us dump our gray water in one of these sites while temporarily vacant. On top of that, they would also not offer any sort of pumping service to aid us.

*Update*

I emailed the state park service and got this reply back.

I see and understand that the park’s dump station is broken. But, what I do not understand is why, when there is a vacant full-hookup spot, I am not allowed to dump my gray water there. I have a one week reservation and can go 2-3 days on my gray water tank. It doesn’t seem to be any harm if I were allowed to use my portable tank to empty some of my gray water in, while the full-hookup site is unoccupied. This is very frustrating and extremely unaccommodating. You are charging campers full price to stay at a broken campground and not trying to help anyone deal with YOUR malfunction. All solutions given are over 10 to over 20 miles away! I’m aware you cannot help the distance to other dump stations but, you could provide customers with a pumping service or have your system pumped periodically. I am extremely disappointed.

 Philip J

Hello, Philip

Thank you for your email. We have not let anyone use the sewer sites to dump because the system there would be overused. When the Caddis Loop was designed, it had only 8 reservable sewer sites, because it could not support more. If the park let all dump there as you suggest, then we would have another problem.

The dump station is not part of the price of your stay, it is only an amenity the park has been happy to supply. It would have taken$20,000 to pump the dump station tanks each week of the season and then we did not know if that would solve the problem. The decision was made to close it. There are gray water cisterns in the Adams and Blue Dun Loops where you can dump gray water or the entrance station has a phone number you can call for a pumping service. Any other questions?

Beautiful but Windy

Henry’s Lake is an absolutely beautiful place. The campground and facilities were generally clean. We loved the location in proximity to Yellowstone. Our site had water and electricity.

We were in a pop up and the wind was a bit strong and unpredictable for us. One night we had to move down the road to the KOA to get out of the wind. If we were in our travel trailer we probably would have been okay.

Depending on the direction of the wind and your site, you may get the aroma from the fish cleaning station and vault toilets by the boat ramp. We were out most of the time so it wasn’t an issue. If we stay here again, we would get a site away from the boat ramp.

Several of our neighbors were disappointed with the dump station being closed and the lack of notification. We did see the alert on the site and didn’t need sewer hookup. This wasn’t an issue for us.

Overall, this is a great campground. We would certainly stay again if in our TT.

Should be 5 stars but the sanitary dump wasn't working without a heads up

What beautiful views and an awesome spot to stay.  We had fantastic fishing in the lake. The sites are maintained well and very neat. It was one of the nicest campground we've ever stayed.  The showers were spacious and very clean.

A BIG issue for us was we were given no heads up that their sanitary station wasn’t working.  We made reservations back in January and nothing was on the website.  They really should have followed up with emails or even phone calls!   We weren't even told when we checked in either.  With an issue this bad, there should have been some communication and a discounted price since the dump wasn't available to use.   We had to back track 40 minutes into West Yellowstone and pay to dump at the Grizzly RV Campground before heading north to Glacier.

A + Campground

The campground has alot of spots available for tent and rv campers. They also have a few cabins as well. The cabins just have beds in them and no other amenities. The bathrooms were the cleanest ive ever seen for a campground to include their showers. The water is great for drinking and the lake is easy to access from 80% of the camping spots. They have pavilions for picnics and large areas for dogs and kids to play. The water on the south side of the lake by the dock is Shallow for quite a ways so swimming with kids is doable. The lake is forgiving for kayaks and other small watercraft until the wind picks up then it can be dangerous. The staff was awesome, they had bear bins for your trash and the park was well maintained. If your looking for a nice getaway give this park a shot, you won't be disappointed.

Very nice campground on a lake

Nice campground right on a lake and close to the west entrance to Yellowstone Smallish state park (44 sites plus several cabins) right on Henry’s Lake. Located 16 miles from West Yellowstone, MT (and the west entrance to Yellowstone NP), it is a nice quiet place to camp but with easy access to the park. We camped here for three nights and our site (35) had a view of the water but in my opinion, Site 33 is the best as you have an unobstructed view of the lake. We reserved our site in March for July and are glad we did as the campground was full. Sites are either electric and water or electric with access to water. The bath/shower house in the Blue Dun Loop was new and immaculate (I dropped my soap in the shower and had no qualms about picking it up and using!) However, they are still working out the kinks and there was a sign warning that there may not be hot water; I had one hot shower and one cold one! I saw single kayaks near the dock which I assume were available for rentals although we did not inquire further. I highly recommend a day trip to Upper Mesa Falls (your camping tag will give you access with no additional fee) and/or Earthquake Lake. We did both in one day. Lots of families with kids and apart from the rude campers next to us who arrived at 1:00 am running their diesel engine for 45 minutes while they set up, it was very quiet after dark. I would give this campground 5 stars except for lack of privacy between sites and not a lot of shade and it was HOT in July.

Beautiful and so much to do

It’s a pretty huge campground. We didn’t even realize it until we wandered through for an evening walk and saw the entire other section of the campground. Most sites had fire pits, and they’re pretty well spaced out so you’re not on top of your neighbor. My kids loved riding their bikes around the campsites and there are some really cool trails. Paved if your of that speed, but it looked like there was a pretty rigorous hike up along a ridge. We used it as a basecamp for day trips into Yellowstone and it was reasonable. There were a lot of signs for fishing on The lake, but we were not really there for that.
