Tallulah Gorge State Park Campground

My two girls 18 and 20 had rented a van from Atlanta and this was our first stop , we had rented space 28 ,with hookup for water and electric. 

Great spot ,stone bench and table ,fire pit , and grill ,the grill was a big hole in so a bit difficult to BBQ on it .

We got there around 3 pm , and went for a walk to check out the area first that day .

Nice area and trail. Toilet and shower is opposite in bathhouse,my oldest daughter tought it was dirty and old. It was her first trip in a van and camplife. We slept very well the first night.

Next morning we got up and run walked to get a permit to walk the stairs down to Tallulah gorge and to walk over, we got the permit and walked back to get breakfast ,and after that we walked all the stairs down. I had had a incindent with my foot two weeks before leaving and coming down to the falls , I got scared looking at the others walking over the rocky stones in the water and fall in . And I decied that for me that was probably not the good way to start the camping life and only driver to walk over there. Told the girls to go without me, they went out in the middel of there ,but think they felt sorry for their mum not be able to join so they came back and we went up again.

Its heavy to go up the stairs again,but its very beautiful . When we got up we felt we had seen what s to see there and since we had next day was rafting in Nanthala river early morning ,we decied maybe it was a good idea to leave the campground and find another spot nearer to that . That turned out to be a good idea, the traffic to get there took longer and would have been hopless the next day.

So dump statition is on way out ,first time for the girls and me to deal with this alone,we managed.

Tallulah Gorge State Park has lots to offer. Hiking, waterfalls, beach, playground, fancy visitor center. The campground is more small rv friendly due to narrow roads. The campground is mostly shaded but no privacy between most sites. Bathrooms were kept clean and were in better conditions than other state parks we’ve visited. It was a nice perk that we had direct access to the hiking trails from the campground.

We enjoyed our relaxing 2 night stay, our neighbors were all friendly. Bathhouses were kept clean but showing their age. Short distance to the hiking trails.

Tallulah Gorge State Park has a small campground with small sites but some large enough for big rigs. The roads in the campground are steep and hilly. Sites are close together and the showers/restrooms are small and dated. But, you should come here for the hiking and views of the Gorge.

Sites are somewhat spread out. Hilly with trees

General: Smallish (50-site) campground; all sites have water and electric with the pull-through sites considered premium. An interesting thing about Georgia state parks is that when you arrive and check in, you become eligible for a senior or military/veteran “rebate” which is not available when reserving. 

Site Quality: Gravel driveways and most appeared level. The sites are spacious with foliage providing some separation between most sites. You would think by looking at the map that sites 12,18, and 20 would be most private/desirable, however, these sites are closest to Highway 441 and although you don’t see the highway through the trees, you will hear almost constant road noise (including engine braking from 18-wheelers) which does detract from the ambiance of camping. Each site has a large concrete picnic table, lantern hook, bbq grill, and fire ring. 

Bathhouse: Two bathroom/shower houses in the loop. Reasonably clean. Shower stalls were private with benches and hooks and the water was warm. 

Activities/Amenities: There is a playground in close proximity to the campsites. You can easily hike to the Interpretive Center (less than a mile) and from there, hike on several trails. I recommend the North and South Rim Trail Loop but there are around 1100 steps, and you do need to be in reasonably good shape. During peak autumn colors, this was a gorgeous hike! Note: you do need a permit if you plan to hike down into the gorge. We were told this is an extremely strenuous hike that takes 4-5 hours and only 100 permits are granted each day on the day you plan to hike. The Interpretive Center is open 8 am– 5 pm and the staff is very helpful. There is swimming in the summer, fishing, tennis, and spring/fall whitewater releases. There is also a gift shop with the usual t-shirts and souvenirs. There is a laundry room in the campground, however, several of the units were out of order. We didn’t use so cannot comment on the quality of the working units. 

We spent two nights here and enjoyed hiking on the North Rim and South Rim trails, descending to the suspension bridge but not all the way to the floor of the gorge.

It’s perfectly situated to visit all the cute towns in northern Georgia and they have well maintained sites, hiking trails, and a swim beach not far. You can buy wood and ice on grounds (honor system) and check in is at the interpretation center. This was the perfect escape from the city for us.

We visited for one night as a stop between Panama City Beach and Pigeon Forge. Using the website for last minute reservations was not possible but it indicated some walk-up sites were available. There was no staff person at the entry and no way to pay for the site with money in a registration envelope. We did find a nice campground host who said we could pay at the visitor center the next day, which we did. We stayed in a pull through site with electric, water and sewer. There are smaller sites also available for tents or backing in and with fewer hookups. There is a dump station also. It was clean, peaceful and quiet. The sites are pretty close together. The gorge and visitor center were great. We did a morning hike along the upper rim and saw several of the falls and the dam before continuing our trip. If you arrive at the visitor center early you can get one of the 100 daily permits to hike to the canyon floor, but we didn't do that. There is not much around the park in terms of gas, stores or restaurants without driving 15-20 minutes. There is a playground and showers / restrooms.

Sites were so easy to get into, nice small loop with minimal noise. Clean bath houses and laundry on site that was only $1 per load!! Hiking and views of the Falls were breathtaking! You will need a permit if you want to access the floor which we were unable to do due to high water levels all three days we were there. You can still hike to the bridge without a permit and it’s still very challenging because of the steps!

Drove in here after hours. The cell service is great and the camp host is kind and friendly. I checked in with him in the evening and he told me to park and pay in the morning. This was supposed to be a one-night stop but I’m going to take advantage of the good service and hiking trails for another evening. Tent/car sites have electrical and drinking water spouts. The showers could use a deep clean but the water is nice and hot. There’s a lot of sites but they’re pretty close together. Lots of trees but no brush for noise or privacy. Little pricey at $34 bucks a night but it looks like they have laundry. Overall, I’d say this is a good place to clean up and plan your next adventure while enjoying some hiking.

Staff super encouraging and helpful. The hike to camp location was spectacular. Great views!! Stayed 2 nights , had a blast! ❤️❤️

Was fortunate to stay as campground host during the winter. Only 50 campsites for RV’s, one fantastic group site, and several remote tent sites. Most trails are easy but the steps to the suspension bridge and bottom of the gorge can be challenging. Laundry room that requires quarters, 2 separate bathroom locations. The interpretive center has a great gift shop and offers educational programs.

This is an amazingly beautiful state park. The bathrooms are super clean. Great cell service. Site 12 very private 18, 20 not bad 45,47,49 50 good too try to pick end spot

A pretty place with good hiking. The campground was fine, but the sites were too close for a state park atmosphere. We had a premium site, but I’m not sure I would have called it that. There was quite a variation among the sites, so know what you’re getting. Also, apparently on M-Th there is no one to check you in and we had to go to the visitors center, which is a mile away and was quite crowded. Not great when pulling a trailer.

Campgrounds are close to the road, so you can hear trucks and cars passing, it’s quiet enough that’s not going to bother your sleep but it takes away from the being immersed in nature feel. They’re a little close together, and the area near the bathhouses and trash had a strong enough smell that I wouldn’t wanna stay at those sites, at least not in a tent. The host are friendly and funny, the hike to all the overlooks (there are many) is definitely worth it. Tallulah gorge is twenty minutes from black rock mountain so take advantage and visit both places.

This is a beautiful campground with awesome trails right from the campground. Lots of stairs to the bottom of the gorge but so worth it. Beautiful views from all trails and a very cool suspension bridge.

Camped here several times. The gorge is a thing of beauty with several overlooks around the rim. There is a nice trail from the campground that will lead to the gorge. At this wtiting permits are not being issued to hike to the bottom of the gorge. Dogs are permitted on the trails except the trail leading to the gorge. The campground has two well maintained bath houses. Has a few pull throughs and nice shaded sites all through the campground.
Campground hosts are friendly and available to assist. The interpretive center in the visitors center is one of the best and there is a film depicting birth of the gorge.

Great park. Many hiking opportunities in the park and surrounding areas. It is 1099 stairs to the bottom of canyon!Campground was nice. Sites are open and unlevel but most were a good size. Sites are gravel with table, grill, water, and electric. Campground is very hilly. It was great to be able to access trails from the campground. You can also walk to the day use area from campground which has a trail and beach picnic area. 2 bathhouses were good. Laundry facilities available. There was little cell reception and no tv reception here. Went to Helen for a bit-IMO it's overrated. Branch out from the park because there are some great hiking trails in the area. They were not issuing any gorge floor permits the time we went. There is a fabulous museum/welcome center here with some history and facts about the park. Park is pretty busy. It was spring break when we went but it was not overwhelming. It was nice to see kids riding bikes and running outside.

Took my boys after studying the 7 Natural wonders of GA and this gorge is one of them. Did not disappoint. The hike to the bottom is not for the faint of heart. And the steps back up will challenge the most fit among us. But the views and experience is well worth the pain. Campground while being big rig friendly is a little tight ( we have a 42ft motorhome). If your large try to book sites 34 or 35 pull through. No sewers, but easy to use dump station next to the exit. Make sure you add this stop to your Must see list

We tent camped here back in March and absolutely LOVED IT. The trails were well maintained and accessible from the campsite. The bathrooms were clean and close by. The sites can be close together but I still felt like we had plenty of privacy. The visitors center is also close by! Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get floor permits due to weather-but the other hikes and wineries close by kept us busy. Each site has electrical hookups, fire pit, and a water pump. We can’t wait to go back!

I couldn’t do all of the steps, but sure was a great view. There’s 3 sets of steps. 210, 310, and 350 steps. Not for the out of shape people, for sure but many great views to see from the top.

It was beautiful and the campsites while close together, were still rugged feeling. The waterfalls were beautiful, the stairs down was worth the view, tough getting back up though lol

Great camp ground. The park was clean, well maintained, had more than enough facilities and you can also buy ice and fire wood on site.

The only issues we had was the noise from the highway (quite close), and it’s a compact campground so your neighbours are a little close. Perfect for hiking the gorge however.

Would stay here again.

Very nice campground and well maintained. Short walk to the hiking trails which connect directly into the campground. Sites are very close together but still offer trees and shade. Bathhouse is in very good condition. Each site has a large concrete picnic table, fire ring and charcoal grill with grate.

This is a place you most definitely have to make a stop for. The views from the top trails are amazing! We didn’t get to go to the suspension bridge or gorge floor as we had our dogs and the floor was closed but still worth seeing. We hiked most of the upper trails and they were all well kept, easy, and had breath taking views. Don’t see a lot of places like this in the south region. Definitely a gem.

It was a really sweet, quiet, clean campground.  I was so pleased with the site we were on, site 13, was centrally located, relatively easy to back our trailer into, and a perfect partial shade site.  The camp host met us as we drove in even though we were slightly after office closing hours.  The restrooms were clean, the showers were clean, and all the people we came across were so friendly.  The proximity to hiking was about as close as you could get, and though we didn't make it to the beach, it was walkable distance as well.  We will definitely be back somewhere down the road!

I haven't actually gotten to camp here because it's always booked but I have driven through the campground and I visit here often. You are in between Clayton and Clarkesville where there are good local places to eat. The campground is up the road a bit so you don't really hear the highway noise. The Campground is secluded and quiet. So many stairs down to the gorge but worth it! The waterfalls are beautiful and the park staff are all very nice. I have been here for every season and it's beautiful in the summer, fall, spring, and winter. There's an easy paved trail with water access just across the way that is good for dipping your feet in the water and maybe throwing a fishing line. I love coming here!

We stayed in site #4 with water & electric. The spot was tight & the people's picnic table next to us was up high & looked right into our windows in our camper. The best site was #12 we should have moved into it the day after we got there is was open. The campground closes & locks the gate at 10 so be out if your not staying the night.  My cousin was visiting & she left at 10:10 they camp host walked up the gate was locked he had a head lamp on & totally blinded us very intimidating. 

We hiked at the gorge but didn't walk all the way down into the canyon it's a long way back up 300 stairs each way. There is a beautiful hike across the highway the Shortline trail it was beautiful. The old railroad ran through there it's worth the walk, flat trail with a stream running along it. I think it was about a 3 mile hike.

Drove to Black Rock Mountain checked out that state Park & the Campground. Glad we didn't pull our travel trailer up to there is was a tight winding narrow road.  Did some antiquing & ate at the Dillard house. It's a family style meal & way to much food. The place is packed.  Next to the Dillard house is a small distillery RM Rose my husband picked up a bottle of Burbon Whiskey single barrel. 

We went to 12 spies Winery it had a great sunset view we got some wine & sat outside watching sunset.

This was our second visit, we always stop here when we are traveling between North Carolina and Alabama. This particular day it was super foggy and sprinkling (nothing to stop us though) and it turned out really great because we got to see a completely different scene from our last summer, sunny day visit. Short walk to the overlook, we took our 3 children; ages 7, 5 and 2. The view shows a beautiful cascading waterfall. To get to the bridge and bottom there are a good many steep steps, but worth it if you're able. There are about 50 campsites, some RV with hookups and some tent! Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. If you have kids the visitor center is really cool and they have a playground!

Didn’t make it to our destination so had to improvise. This place allowed me to make an online reservation and complete check in the next morning. For $30 (roughly) we had access to a bathroom and a great clean camp site.

Edit to add: if there is a chance you will stay at another state park within a year get the adventure pass for $105. It comes with 3 free nights. I spent $62 on another camp site the next day.
