Cumberland Island

Hiking in S. Georgia is a challenge but don’t miss this if wilderness camping is your thing. I suggest you kayak from the boat landing at Crooked River State Park directly to Plum Orchard the hike to the camp.

Brickhill Bluff Wilderness Campground

Brickhill Bluff is the furthest north, primitive, wilderness campsite on the west side of the island. Non-potable water is the only amenity available at this campsite. Hiking the main road puts you approximately 10.5 miles from Sea Dock where the ferry drops you off. Taking the trails that parallel the main road may extend your hike further. Three main cost to account for are the park entry, the ferry, and the daily campsite fee.

Cumberland Island has plenty of things to see and explore like ruins, mansions, beautiful beaches, and wild horses. For those who don't have a lot of time to explore, there is a land and legacy tour offered for a fee (to be paid in advance). There is a higher concentration of mosquitos ticks, and other bugs during the warmer months, so be prepared.

Nice backcountry spot

Be sure to snag your your permit for this spot! We paddled from the mainland in St. Mary's to this spot on the island. If you time the tide right, you can ride the Crooked River out relatively quickly. Just be sure you've got a chart and not just a map!

This area is right on the water (the sound side, not the ocean side) so you can pull your boats right up on the shore. There are no designated sites, just a bit of a flat open area to set up camp. The raccoons are active and abundant here just as they are through out the rest of the island so be sure you have the ability (knowledge and gear) to store your food appropriately. There is a water pump ere that provides potable water.

There are several hiking trails that run through this campsite so if you've got time to do some exploring, this is a good jumping off point. Be aware that you are relatively close to a park boundary as well.
