Mount Herman Road Dispersed Camping

If you keep driving up a few miles you’ll find some good and open spots, great for the dogs. I have a Promaster and got up with no problem.

We drove a couple minutes up Mt Herman road and then found it barricaded and closed so had to abort mission.

The sites were very spread out, easy to feel like there’s no one else around. Some gunshots can be heard from surrounding area throughout the day. Beautiful views though!!!

Very quiet and spread out

Very nice, super dispersed campsites so you won't be bothered by those around you. The drive up can be a little daunting at night but during the day it is plenty fine. The trail up to the peak is a great trail, pretty difficult at parts, but the view at the top makes it 100% worth it. Very windy

Feels fairly remote although you can still see town from much of the road. Not too much traffic, sites well spread out so no noise concerns. Good access to lots of trails.

Great views if you're willing to drive the winding road up the mountain. If you're in an SUV/truck it should be no problem. Lower clearance cars can still enjoy many spots lower on the mountain.

I visited for one night on a Sunday and it was pretty quiet overall, but expect to hear the faint rumble of 4x4s pretty often.

We stayed along the Mt Herman Road and it was gorgeous. Lots of folks out there enjoying the beautiful weather - it rained both afternoons and never got above 80* F on either day (we were at 9,338 ft in altitude). There is a LOT of trash out there that you don’t really notice until you stop to take a look The first place we stopped was so covered in broken glass that we opted to find another spot bec our pet pig, Schnitzel could have been injured. We found another spot though that was fairly clean and the. Also picked up a garbage bag full of trash so that we could leave the spot better than we found it.

The pin, as other have said, only takes you to the trailhead. We continued about 3 miles farther along the road where there was many bigger pull offs. Spent two nights here before heading west again. The Pilot in Monument has showers and was an added bonus for being 15 minutes from our spot.

My sister was visiting and had never been camping before and I’m so glad we found this location because it was a gem! We didn’t have any issues with bugs, the sunset was amazing and we felt safe. There was a couple other groups nearby but our site still felt private.

Pretty easy road going up, you have to go past this point another 15 minutes or so and you will start coming across camp spots. Some are on some little side trails that are unmarked. I found one that was a little ore challenging to get to but well worth it, needed to use my 4x4.

The pin marker for this is a trailhead pull off, hardly a big enough spot to camp. You have to go a couple more miles to start finding spots! We made it up in a stock forester with no problems. Road is narrow in spots and some fast drivers, not a fun time for this anxious passenger haha. Our spot was fairly clean except for bits of broken glass everywhere—if you’re ground camping plan to spend some time making sure your spot is clear.

It's a long, bumpy road up to the very top, but there are some open spots to park your vehicle and trailer in somewhat seclusion toward the peak. Very happy I discovered this place but you'll have to go a lot further up than where the pin/map marker is dropped!

I recommend not going if you have a normal low clearance car... although I did notice someone somehow got a Prius up there

It’s worth checking out. Some sites are trashed, people need to pack all their trash and take it with them. Found one that was clean and great views.

We decided to go camping during spring thinking it would be warm enough and it snowed (as should be expected in Colorado). The trail was decently covered in snow but all around was not to bad. We had fun but froze our butts off.

We had worst camping experience here this week. We initially planned to do disperse camping for 4 nights here but ended up having to leave early after 3 unbearable nights. First night, we chose to camp at first “roundabout”, ATVs and all kinds of traffic drove past every 5 mins into night and early morning. Second night, a family of 6 children parked their three cars 10 yards from our tent and unleashed hell. The place has many sites and places to BBQ and camp but they decided to disturb us as much as they can by staying 10 feet away. They arrived at around 7pm and partied and screamed thru 11pm and then happily left. The third night, a 3 car convoy of teenagers with beers came to camp right next to us, again same story partied all night long despite strong wind and rain. They laughed and smashed all beer glass bottles and that’s why you will find this place full of glasses. We left the next morning and Would never to come back to this place

I was heading to the Mt. Herman trailhead and decided to continue on as far as I felt like and am glad I did...beautiful view,the switchbacks were very narrow and a lil scary at times but as it was a nice time of year end of June weather was awesome ...so...double thumbs up! And it was free so yayy to that😁

Sorry, No photos. It is very beautiful up there. I have only been here once, and I did not do enough research. I recently purchased a 26ft sustainable travel trailer and decided to take it out for the first time. Well the road up is very tight. Very skinny switchbacks. About half way up looking for a way to turn around. We got lucky and found a space just barely large enough to back in to carfully. I am a first time TT owner so, yeah it was a bit nerve racking. Although it was very beautiful, I will not make that mistake again. Don't go up if you are pulling anything larger than a tear drop trailer. I didn't go all the way up, so I don't know if there is any kind of turn around up there. If someone knows, please enlighten me, as would like to know if I was going to be screwed if I went all the way up.

are there pull off sites on the road or do you have to walk to them

I noticed on here that it says there's water hookups and electric and Sewer excetera however this is dispersed camping and does not have any type of amenities at all. if you go up to the Meadows or thunder ridge it is a pay campgrounds and they do not have electrical water are sewer but they do have restrooms if I am remembering correctly. It's been 15 years since I've been up there to camp. Now if you're talking about the dispersed camping this is where all the kids from Monument and the areas go up to party on the weekends and it can get pretty Rowdy from what I understand. It's a beautiful area up there I could have it that but you need to be careful and Camp away from the kids.

Looking for a quick spot to stay the night as we were traveling through. Easy drive up, found a pull out fairly close to the main road with established fire ring. Great views of the city lights and then sunrise. Seems like a lot of options. Surprised there was so much traffic early morning—tricks, bike, dirt bikes. Would happily stay here again.

30 minutes and kick back and please crack a cold one for Colorado being the best place.

If you enjoy panoramic views of the Rockies, drive in dispersed camping and putting your off-roading skills to the test, this dispersed campsite is a must visit! My 9 yr old son and I happened upon this mountain top paradise somewhat by accident. We were looking for a less challenging day hike with low traffic and decided to try the Mt. Herman trailhead. My ever burning desire for a view and solitude lead us up Mt. Herman rd to the location I marked on the map for this listing. Access was challenging, even with our 4x4 Jeep seeing as there was pretty deep snowfall accumulation, steep grades, and hairpin switchbacks heading up. However in warmer seasons this would be easy access for most stock 4x4 vehicles. No lift necessary, just a desire for the boundless views afforded at the summit. There are multiple pull offs, relatively low traffic aside from the occasional off-roading convoy passing through spreading merriment and good cheer. There are some really cool fire ring setups and plenty of epic views to make your own. If Colorado’s what you want, here’s a great place to experience the back country without having to drive for hours to access it. We had a blast! Please ALWAYS remember, be Kind & rewind!!
