About

State Park

Burlington Campground is open year round and is centrally located next to the Visitor Center on the Avenue of the Giants, approximately 2 miles south of Weott at Humboldt Redwoods State Park Camping. The campground has 57 sites in old and second growth redwoods, and 3 hike & bike sites for visitors arriving on foot or bicycle. Across the street is a short nature trail that leads to the river where there is swimming and fishing. A summer bridge provides access to additional hiking trails.

Burlington Campground is on site-specific reservations year round. However, some sites may not be available in the off season. Sites that are not reserved are available on a first come, first served basis for one night at a time. The campground access road that winds its way through the towering redwoods in Burlington Campground is narrow and may not be suitable for certain vehicles.

Fees are $35.00 per night and include one vehicle. Extra vehicles are $8.00 per vehicle, per night.

The Burlington Campground entrance station can be contacted directly at (707) 946-1811. Calls will be returned promptly during the summer season, but it may be difficult to reach staff in the off season. Reservations cannot be made at the park.

Incredible experience

We loved staying in the Redwoods! Such a peaceful and amazing place to dwell.

There are no hookups, so come prepared! We liked our little cozy spot. The actual sites are nice and spacious, but the area you have to park your rig are TINY, so it can definitely be difficult the bigger your rig is. I had a challenging time backing in our 21 ft trailer.

But once we were settled, we had a great stay and I wish we could have stayed longer!

They also have free coffee and tea at the visitor center that we took advantage of in the morning. Nice touch!

Like No Other Campground

We stayed here when all the Redwood Nat’l/State Parks were fully booked, and I’m beyond pleased that we did! Truly fantastic, one-of-a-kind place to stay—with phenomenal hiking in old-growth groves, too!

Bathrooms were adequate, floors were often wet, but most had soap and lights, which you don’t always get. Showers coin-operated, hot and good pressure. Floors puddle a lot. You do get a whole room to yourself, though. Really nice dish station with two big utility tubs and hot and cold water in our area of the campground. Wood available at check-in station.

Site fairly clean, but several old tent stakes lying about. Lots of noisy crows overhead in the evenings. Tree canopy keeps things pretty dark all day, but we were never cold. Slept really well. Site was fairly level once we figured out how to configure our two tents. LOTS of poison oak but it’s mostly contained in fenced areas between sites. We were able to avoid it fairly easily. Sites are generous but you are pretty close to your neighbors, and the main road is very tight, believe what others have said about it.

Be sure to spend some time at the Visitor Center—it’s a nice one and the folks are very friendly.

Like camping in a dream

Generous campsites nestled amongst giant redwoods…incredible setting to camp in.

About 30 minutes from supplies, restaurants, etc…and it gets dark early thanks to the valley and giant trees…so plan accordingly.

Data service on Verizon was anywhere from no service to able to stream.

Some of the facilities and tables need some TLC, but nothing that dampened our enthusiasm for the campground.

Loved our stay.

Comfortable and Gorgeous!

(3/23/21) Burlington Campground is a wonderful place if you're looking for a relaxing, comfortable forest retreat. Although I don't have any, I think this would be a great place to bring kids who you're hoping to inspire an outdoors lifestyle. Lots of nice, easy trails around and amenities are kept clean and well stocked. I've camped quite a bit along coastline, close to the water, so I was surprised at how warm the redwoods kept us overnight, despite it being early spring.

I stayed for a brief 2 nights as I was on the road, but I would absolutely love to come back here again for a longer, more intentional stay! Totally recommend - if you do stop here for a night, enjoy your stay!

Lovely Camping

We came here in early October 2020 for a Friday - Monday trip. The campsite is large and spots are spaced out. Due to COVID a lot of sites were closed, which made everything feel very spaced out.

The area is beautiful. The campsite it self has tons of beautiful redwoods and ferns on the property. It was beautiful to just sit and admire the scenery.

Bathrooms and showers were clean and the campsites were across the street from some short but beautiful hikes.

The visitor center was closed but right next door. The area to check in did sell wood and we noticed a lot of staff throughout our trip.

The campsite was super quite and very peaceful.

We brought our dog which was great. Lots of trees and lots of shade. I think almost every site was shaded. Bring your hammocks because there was plenty of locations on each site to set them up. I would be aware that many of the upper sites are on a slope.

Each site came equipped with a fire ring/grill, picnic table and bear box.

We had the best time and went a little ways up north to go fishing outside of Fortuna. We actually caught a fish this time :) Fishing near the campsite was not recommended due to the low water level. However, their were plenty of options just a short drive away.

We stayed at site #35 which was large but had a slope. However, we were able to find two kind of flat spots to put tents and it was totally fine.

Gorgeous trees and extremely clean

This was not a crowded campground and several sites were blocked off to give more space with Covid-19, which gave a buffer between neighbors. A pretty equal mix of campers and tents and it’s a fairly quiet campground with fewer families. People are just chill and enjoying the gorgeous redwood trees. Trails are right across the street from the campground, so easy access to explore the park. Firewood is expensive at $8/bundle, but the fit pits are nice and contained.

Family friendly campground beneath the redwoods

I stayed here in late July for three nights with my 6 year old daughter and our 3 friends.  Site 13 was easily large enough for four tent set-ups in separate areas of the site, though none of them were completely level.  There are three kinds of sites in the campground - those backed against the woods or the fence separating the campground from the ranger houses, those in the middle, and those next to the Ave of the Giants.  The ones with the most room and privacy were backed up against the woods/fence, and we were in one of those sites. Each sites has a metal fire barrel (with half grate), a picnic table, and enough room to park two vehicles. Each site also has redwoods growing in them and often large stumps (many with steps cuts into them for climbing).  Water spigots are available about every other site.

This was a very family friendly campground. My daughter and her friend loved playing among the trees and stumps, and riding her scooter around the loop.  Rangers frequently walked/drove around the campground and a camp host went around every morning to check sites and car tags.  Of the three nights we were here, only one was kinda loud with music and voices, but they went subdued around 11 pm. The only other bother were the three dogs in the adjacent camp that were....  well, dogs (they barked a lot). Road noise was present but not distracting.

The location was great. You could stroll over to the visitor center (rangers set up on the outside over the weekend) or across the street to the nature trails.  A short drive takes you into Myers Flat or Founders Grove, and you are smack in the middle of the Ave of the Giants. I would have given this campground 5 stars, if it wasn't for the comfort stations (bathrooms).  They had a sewage backup/clog the day we arrived, so we didn;t have showers for the time of our stay. They brought in port-a-potties within hours of the restrooms being closed, but not sinks or soap.  With CV-19, I was not happy about not having a clean restroom facility.

Despite this, however, I was glad I went.  The area was beautiful and peaceful. We went strolling around the redwoods and swimming in the Eel River (south fork). Would recommend.

Good family campground

Like most of the reviews, the campsites are roomy but little privacy. The bathrooms are clean and showers are nice for people who aren't big into camping.

There are lots of old redwood stumps to explore and climb on for kids. The Gould nature hike is easy and informative with lots of interesting sites. Walk down to the river for stone skipping, wading fun. Also the river hike on the opposite side of the river was amazing, we didn't run into another hiker, so peaceful.

Also the rangers there were awesome.  Our car wouldn't start when leaving (due to leaving car doors open).  But the rangers had a battery starter pack. Saved us hours of waiting for AAA.

Breath taking campground in the avenue of the giants

My partner and I stayed at the Burlington campground in Humboldt Redwoods State Park in March and could not have had a better experience. We were able to get a first come first serve site without much difficulty (we were very concerned about this as we were driving up from San Francisco). Our site was nestled amongst historic, giant redwoods in the heart of the avenue of giants. The site its self was clean and came with a fire pit, picnic table, and bear locker. Staff was helpful and accommodating. There are several breathtaking trails that connect to the campground and others close by car. We can't wait to go back!

Good Option Along Avenue of the Giants

I ended up here because the Hidden Springs Campground down the road was closed. The highlight of the Burlington campground is that it's right by the Visitors Center so you have easy access to the wifi, free coffee in the morning, and lots of educational opportunities. In fact, I even had wifi access at my campsite. The campground was almost full when I arrived without a reservation around dinner time mid-September.

The campground and most of the campsites are pretty close to the main Avenue of the Giants road so if you're a light sleeper this may be an issue. The campsites are large and spacious but there isn't much privacy between them as the undergrowth is largely absent. There are showers, flush toilets, plenty of water spigots, and tables and bear lockers in each site. Unfortunately my site was pretty far from the facilities and there didn't seem to be a direct way to access them without going through others' campsites or walking way around on the road.

There are also really wonderful looking hiker-biker sites. The entire area is incredible and if you have time, take a slow drive through the trees. Ask the rangers for good local hikes and take lots of stops along the turnouts. I definitely do not regret taking the Avenue of the Giants rather than the faster 101.

Absolutely a must!

Omgosh, I can't enough about this campground! The actual campsite was huge! It was beautiful, nicest camp host/rangers, gigantic trees all around, dogs, families, handicap sites, clean bathrooms with hot water, big visitor center, daily planned activities, so many great hiking trails, and the best part is: COFFEE at the visitor center! You don't have to brew your own! It's not Starbucks, but if I can get my coffee, a couple of granola bars and get going in the morning without taking out a cooking utensil, it's a world of diffence. It's one of the nicest campgrounds we've been to, and we love camping, so there's many to compare to. I actually locked my keys in my car and the ranger drove me from the trail head back to the campground to get in touch with AAA and took my husband and my daughter to get her hiking badge while I waited to someone to help get my keys out. That's what I call service! I have to go back! So worth it, it's a must.. :-)

Beautiful

The Avenue of the Giants is one of my favorite places in the whole world. Burlington camp ground is basically right in the middle. It's right next to the ranger station/visitor center and just a few minutes away from Miranda, where you can pick up some last minute supplies. The biggest problem I have with this campground is that it's situated right next to the main road, so there a lot of traffic moving through. It's a slow speed limit, so it's not super loud or anything, but it does break the serenity a bit. The rangers are very knowledgeable, which is great if you're looking for things to do/places to see on you're trip. If you forget your firewood, you can pick some up at the ranger station. Each site is provided with a fire pit and bear box. You definitly want to use the near boxes, it's not uncommon to spot a bear while in the Avenue.

Beautiful, serene, cool

Gorgeous campground in the Redwoods. We have stayed here twice. Once in March and once in July. The shade from the redwoods makes this a cool haven from the hot California summers. Campsites are mostly shaded. Campsites are large with good fire pits and picnic tables. Lots of redwood stumps for the kids to play on. If you plan to hang your hammock, bring extra rope as the trees are SO BIG that regular hammock ropes won't reach around the trees. Spent several afternoons reading in the shade of the redwoods in our hammock with a blanket on top of us. Even the 13-year-old boy fell asleep reading in the hammock. Short walk to a beautiful swimming hole when the sun warmed things up in the afternoon. The closest store is okay for snacks and essentials but not much else. No real restaurants nearby. Be sure to have your cooler fully packed and bring your meals with you. Clean restrooms with coin operated hot showers. Water spigots close by to campsites.

Stopped here twice once on the way down doing the PCH and once on the way back up both in May mid week. The first way down we got a site that backed up to Ave of the Gods which was not as noisy as one would expect it was peaceful. Nice bathrooms and a fun little exploration to the river. The way back we we spotted a camp site we wanted so traded the reservation for a non-reservable site. #14 in Burlington has a burnt out redwood you can actually put your tent inside of which was incredible. Would stay here again and again, maybe try a different loop.

There is something truly humbling camping under such big trees. This camp site was beautiful. We were in site 9 and it felt pretty private because it was up further from the two neighboring sites. Downsides are that it was across from the bathroom (I was traveling with a 1 and 2 year old so that was done on purpose) so it was car traffic from people too lazy to walk there. I didn't expect that. I'm also a tent camper and tents are mixed in with rv's so you get the rv buzz to until generator shut off time. The bathrooms were nice running water and flush toilets. Showers are pay showers too. Half the campground was closed when we went for renovations so it was not as busy as it probably usually is. The highway was close so you could hear some car noise but it wasn't as bad as the other reviews have implied. Nice amphitheater and trails around the site!
