An RV site for the family

The RV area has ~20 sites. They all have water and 30 amps hookups. RVs are pretty close to each other, but not too invasive. Restrooms and showers are clean and in a very decent condition. Each site has a table and a charcoal . Barely any cell reception, but wifi worked pretty well (we could have a video conference).

The Sanborn park has multiple picnic areas, and plenty of space for folks/kids to play around. There are also some trails for short and longer hikes.

The tent / group camp sites are closed due to fores restoration.

To get to Sanborn you will have to drive up a narrow road. We didn't have any issue with a 21' though.

Turkey and Deer

We had a great time staying in RV site. A lot of trails. Bring bug repellent and enjoy nature. We saw a lot of deer and wild turkey. We hardly had a signal.

Nice

Basically an upper parking lot for rv’s that are really close together and on pavement. Showers were good and hot but not really clean. Very quiet place midweek. Gate closes at 8pm though, so get here earlier.

Not good for large RV’s

Nice campground and the other reviews are correct… I would just like to add that the sites are for RV’s 30’ or shorter. Larger RVs will not fit in the spots.

Busy Weekend

The RV spots are part of a parking lot that is used for the walk-in campsites, so it’s busy. All 34 tent sites are walk-in and uphill, so keep that in mind. Also, they only allow charcoal cooking fires. The picnic tables were nice and made out of concrete, so there wasn’t much vandalism. The showers were closed because of Covid (state campgrounds have theirs accessible). The park itself is beautiful and has lots of uphill trails. We left a day early.

No cellular service

The RV camp spots are just parking spaces on asphalt. The lower spots can flood due to uneven pavement so the spaces to the north (left side of the parking area) are preferable. They also lock the entry gate at dusk so if you’re returning after that you need to exit your vehicle to manually unlock in a VERY dark environment. There is also zero cellular service. Otherwise the showers were clean and hot water is plentiful. The surrounding park is a popular hiking spot during the day.

Convenient to the bay area

My husband and I stayed here with our 2 dogs for a weekend.  It was a last minute decision to go camping and we were able to make a reservation I think only a week in advance, and there was availability.

We did have to hike in to our site, but the campground provides big carts to take your stuff.  The only issue is they didnt have a lot of the carts available, so we had to wait for someone to return theirs.  It was a little bit of a hassle, but once we got settled in, it wasnt so bad.  We showed up after work on. Friday, so that seemed to be the time everyone was trying to get to their site.

Noisy loud neighbors in cramped campsites

We were camping for 1 night and boy, was it crowded! Each and every group was fighting for the "wagons" to haul stuff up the hike-in campsites. Some groups even got aggressive with me and my husband for not "returning" the wagon to them. They even threatened and verbally abused us and a few other campers.

There was a large group of guys who had booked the campsite 29, and they were cooking biryani well beyond 1 am, and were drinking and running about noisily. Post midnight, a few campers asked those guys to keep it down but to no avail. The rangers are pretty much useless. When some of us filed a formal complaint with them, they didn't do anything about it.

Overall, this was a less than average experience. There's a reason that this campground so close to the Bay Area is popular with the larger groups. But best avoided.

Redwoods close to town

Nice little place. RV sites are basically parking lot with 4' strips of grass in between, But it was March and mostly empty. Tent sites are hike in up hill and nicely spaced in the woods. Wagons on site to get your stuff up there. Ranger was useless. you need codes for the gate after 7pm, the showers, and the RV dump and they don't volunteer that info, you have to ask.

drive home and back if you forgot something

Great walk-in campground so close to home in the South Bay Area (albeit walk is slightly uphill). Some campgrounds have tables and others don't - some are too close to others but the higher up hill, you're closer to the trail heads. The campground is just past a public park and sometimes on Saturday's (like our trip was), there is an outdoor wedding at part of the park (you can only faintly hear the celebration). Overall, perfect for even just a 12 hour getaway.

Camping among the redwoods

First of all, I did not realize before arriving that the tent sites are walk-in (my fault). That made it difficult to find, but probably not if you know that before. There is a parking lot for the tent sites near the RV sites, and there are plenty of carts to take your gear to your site. I kind of like this setup since it makes it feel a little more remote and you don't get bothered by cats constantly passing your site. We didn't explore the whole campground, since we were in site 5 and were there for such a short time (just a jumping off point for the Skyline to Sea Trail), but the part we saw is spectacularly beautiful. The campground is full of magnificent redwoods with a creek passing right through. The sites each have a picnic table and a very large and roomy food locker. The bathrooms are close and well maintained. The park itself was very pretty and peaceful. We immediately saw a group of 4 deer lounging in the grass upon entering. I wish we could have stayed longer, but I will certainly be back!

Short walk to excellent camping

This is a nice camping away from the car experience. It's a short walk up a paved path from the parking to the campsites. The park provides carts to help with hauling gear, and storage boxes are provided at the site, near the picnic table. The bathrooms are nice, too. The camping is situated in a dreamy redwood forest, but be aware that there are Lyme-carrying ticks in the area. A really neat camping experience so close to the South Bay Area.

Sandborn County Park

Getting there: Getting to the park is fairly easy compared to other parks in the Santa Cruz Mountains like Big Basin. There is an entry fee of $6 per vehicle if you park in the lot. The lot was full and cars were waiting when we left. If the lot is full and your not towing a bunch of stuff or kids you can also access the park via road parking and the gates (if you park in front of the gate you will be ticketed/towed). Campsites: All the campsites provide a picnic table, a bear box, a grill, and fire pit. There are shared restrooms with plumbing scattered all over the place so one will always be within a short walk. The Park: It's nice. Dogs are allowed on leash. Lots of Redwoods but to far inland to see the ocean or anything. Even during the summer it gets enough of a sea breeze and has enough shade to stay cool.
What to do: Go out on some hikes, there are about 15 miles of trails. If you hike 2 days and stay 1 night you can easily hike the park out. Trails start steep and then mellow out once your on the ridge line.
