About

National Forest

The campground is situated along an inlet at the northwestern corner of the lake, a short distance back from the water. Lake Pillsbury, the largest lake in the Mendocino National Forest, is popular for fishing, swimming, and boating. Nearby is a boat launch ramp. There are 44 sites, best suited for tent camping, but also able to accommodate small RVs or trailers (up to 16 feet). A picnic area is adjacent to the campground. Campsites are well shaded by oaks and pines. Some sites are set back among the trees away from the water while others have nice views of the lake.

In Upper Lake, CA, at intersection of State Rt. 20 and Main St., take Main St. 0.9 miles to Elk Mountain Rd. (a.k.a. County Rt. 301 and Forest Rt. M1). Turn left onto Elk Mountain Rd. and go 27.1 miles to a "T" intersection. Turn right, staying on Rt. M1 and go 3 miles to campground on right.

We survived the road to Lake Pillsbury!

We were so happy we were able to snag a few spots here on July 4th weekend 2020! We had never been to the area and were nervous that the sites were only first come, first serve. We downloaded our map just in case we lost service, and we were so happy we did. We lost service and started down the craziest gravel road I have ever come across. It could have been a half-hour, maybe 45 minutes on this road, when we finally got to a paved road with signs leading us to the campsite. We almost turned back a few times, but we made it, and due to the T-shirts and drink cozies we found in the local store, surviving the road to lake Pillsbury is part of the adventure.

The sites we chose were fantastic! Great picnic benches, nice fire pits, running water, and close to the bathrooms. The campsites were pretty secluded and well-spaced out. We spent the day in the lake nearby and overall enjoyed our weekend.

Nice lake camping

Arrived early Friday afternoon in August and there were only 3-4 spots occupied. We got our pick of spots without a reservation. Most spots offer plenty of shade and space between neighbors. Bugs were moderate, bring bug spray. Pit toilets were clean. All camps have a fire ring and picnic table and a few have brick ovens. This is close to the lake, but no direct lake access. Weather was pretty hot and humid until a few hours after dark. Of all the campgrounds on Lake Pillsbury, this one seems the most secluded with privacy and distance from neighbors. The road to get here is mostly dirt and pretty windy, 4WD recommended. This is a popular area for hunting and off roading, so be prepared for a lot of OHV noise and gunshots echoing through the valley. In the evening it sounded like there was a gun range on the other side of the lake, 100 gunshots per minute until after dark. I would give 5 stars except for the OHV and gunfire noise. But the best part, in the right season the elk herds come through the dry riverbed next to the camp. We saw a herd of 30+ elk and listened to them calling all evening and in the morning.

Always a site available

Pogie point is one of my favorite camp grounds around Lake Pillsbury. Not many people camp there because there is no direct access to park your boat next to your site. Normally a spot where my buddies and I group camp and make some noise. We don’t disturb anyone, because no one is there.
