Road closed due to weather!

I’ve camped here in the past with great results but unfortunately the road is closed - I’m assuming due to snowy road conditions.

Great spot near town

While it’s not far from town it gets you away from the others. While you will have others out there they keep to themselves. There was some nudity while out there but they kept to themselves also.

Weekends way to noisy

I've been camping here for 2 days. Everyday there's gunfire way to close. I don't think anyone should be allowed to shoot so close to campers. Besides the guns, at night you hear people partying and racing up and down the road. These are the major cons here.

Pro: the view of the mountains, seeing wildlife and the beautiful weather.

Pros and cons

The spot was really nice but pretty busy, it was a Saturday night though. I had to drive pretty far in to get a spot. There was also people doing target practice which if you’re someone like me who has anxiety it’s a bit stressful. Super easy pull off and lots a spots.

Beautiful, plenty of spots

I love this road. The road has a clearly marked sign to turn left off 180 to enter. The main road is gravel and easy, the off shoot roads to camp on are often deeply rutted, but navigable in a minivan if you drive carefully. At the start of the camping season in Spring the campsites are clean, but become more littered as the season progresses. Please help keep it beautiful folks. There are lots of roads/trails to walk on. Cows graze among the trees in summer, mostly with their calves. Lots of wildlife. I am able to stream on Verizon.

Very quiet stay

I pulled in Sunday afternoon and only say 4 other campers. Extremely quiet during the day and night. Didn’t see any wildlife but I’m sure they are around! No amenities so come prepared for dry camping. Flagstaff is about 15 min away and had good AT&T service and was able to work remotely.

Spacious and quiet

Plenty of sites to pull off on along the road. Though we have a 4x4 truck it is by no means required for as far as we went. I could have gotten into our site and out of our site in a camry. Spacious and private between camps, incredible cell signal for AT&T. One of my new favorites.

Overall nice place,

The main FR 222 road is old but paved so it's easy to dive on for small cars. Some of the campsites are accessible with a small car but for a better more secluded spot you definitely need a bigger car with 4x4. Regardless I enjoy my time there is was pretty and quiet

Beautiful dispersed spot

Tons of spots along FR 222 in which have a great distance in between camp sites! Would definitely come back if I’m ever in the area!! Can be loud at night and during day due to non stop cars/bikes. But other than that tons of wildlife Giselle’s, open range cattle, coyotes are loud at night time. Temps are 50-60 at night 70-80 during day. Tons of dead trees so be careful where you set up! Roads can handle any clearance! Please check it out!!!

Worth it

I’m in a Minivan and the roads were a bit of challenge but nothing bad whatsoever. There are so many places to pull over and tuck yourself away. I would recommend this spot to anyone who’s traveling alone and wants some extra security. (Shooting range is near by so be aware you will hear gun fire)

Awesome place nestled in the woods. Tons of open area for dispersed camping. Short drive to town in case you want to grab a bite to eat or forget something.

Noise from road but I think it’s a detour from 1-40

I’m a fan of this spot. It’s within 10 miles from Flagstaff. Good road that doesn’t require 4WD. Plenty of spots for tent camping and also big rigs. My buddy and I both have service with different providers. I will say the traffic from the road is a little loud but I believe there is construction on I-40 which is detouring people along the forest road. Although the traffic is loud, the forests allows you to move further away from the road for a more quiet night. I would definitely stay here again if I’m ever in the area.

Wish we could stay longer!

This spot is amazing! There were plenty of options when we drove up the road. We can see one other camper from our spot but we didn’t really hear anyone overnight. We did notice some trash around and will pick up what’s around us before we leave. If we lived closer we’d be out here all the time!

Beautiful

I enjoyed this spot. Accessible by my sedan style car, roads weren't too rough until I got further down and had to turn around. Such a gorgeous area! It was quiet the night I stayed there, lots of cars back and forth on the main trail throughout the nights. I will say, I went on a Tuesday to beat the crowds and there were only two spots open that I saw!

Bittersweet

Long gravel road with plenty of pull offs close and far from it. Nice flat areas for camping. Very upsetting to see most of the sites are littered with trash. Please remember to practice “Leave No Trace” principles, disposing of trash and human waste appropriately, so we can all continue to enjoy the places we love so much. :)

Great spot

We came here last minute because we were unable to get to a different site with our car. We were here the end of April and it was a little chilly but not uncomfortable. The surrounding forest is BEAUTIFUL and you can get peaks of the mountains through the trees. We tent camped and it was very quiet with no ambient noise and you can see tons of stars. There was an already built fire pit and the ground is pretty flat in areas for tents. It is dispersed and there are no facilities, we could see another tent but never heard other campers. There was the occasional car on the dirt road but not excessive. I can see that it could get pretty dusty but our site was about 50 ft from the road and it was fine. In the morning I was awakened by lots of bird sounds, would highly recommend this site.

Beautiful pine forest, plentiful sites, fits bigger rvs, decent cell covera

About 20 minutes outside Flagstaff, past the "luxury resort" gated communities, up the mountain, is a well-maintained though narrow hard gravel road with many dispersed campsites right off of it.   Many of the sites are suitable for even large rigs, with space to turn around.

Earlier reviews complained about the dust.  There is dust, lots of it, right off the road in the turnoffs.  But we found it quite simple to drive in a little further where the ground is a carpet of pine needles, soft, fragrant, and no dust at all.

We are here in late October three days before the temperature is scheduled to plummet and the place will be covered in snow, but it's in the 70s now.

Very usable two bars of Verizon, one bar AT&T.  This probably varies depending where you set up.

The only downside to the place are the gunshots in the distance.  Lots of shots, so probably not hunters, or else really bad ones.  Not sure if that's a common occurrence.

Free in the Pines

We pulled in on a Saturday in Late August for a lunch break and to scope out a future camp spot. This looks like a great place for this time of year. There were a scattering of trailers and class A RVs, some tents, and free range cattle roaming through the sites. We look forward to staying another time.

Convienent and Easy!

This was a great spot for a quick night of camping. My friend and I were able to drive out, as the road is very well maintained, and set up camp right off the road. We were lucky to get a spot with a beautiful view of Humphreys. I highly recommend this spot if you need to get away for a night!

VERY dusty but lots of space

We came out in our van on a Saturday around 5:30pm. Lots of spots open and we ended up at one right off the road- that was a mistake. The road is very well maintained and smooth and so cars drive really fast down the road creating so much dust!! We regret not following one of the side roads to find a spot away from the road more. We were sneezing and felt pretty dirty from the dust by the time we left the next morning. We could see two other groups from where we were, but we were in a van so we can’t hear any noise at night so that was fine! And it felt like we were far enough away too. Not sure if there were lots of ATVs or off-road vehicles on the road at night because, again, we can’t hear anything when we’re sleeping in the van. Overall we will probably be back but definitely we will not park right off the road again. It looked like even some people parked off the road about 400-500 feet were getting dusty too, just not as dusted as we were. I had Verizon cell phone service the whole time!

OK for what it is

This camping area has lots of sites, lots of campers, and lots of atv's. The road in is narrow and graveled and most sites are fairly close to the road. Being so close to Flagstaff, I feel a lot of people come out here from town to ride and play. It is VERY dusty from all the traffic and offroaders, and there are people target shooting in multiple spots and partying late into the am.

Dispersed in the Forest

Picturesque forest boondocking not far from Flagstaff off of highway 180. Turn onto Forest Road 222 and take the first road on the right. Plenty of "campsites" with existing fire rings and places to park and set up a tent.

There were less than 10 groups in this entire area over Memorial Day Weekend.

Got a little cold at night since it's at decent altitude.

Would definitely stay here again
