Wind Creek State Park Campground

About

State Park

Camping near Birmingham, South of Alexander City on Alabama Highway 128 you’ll find one of the largest state-owned campgrounds in the United States, Wind Creek State Park. However, that distinction is not the only thing that makes Wind Creek special. Wind Creek State Park is the public's access to Lake Martin.

Wind Creek’s 1,445 scenic acres hug the shoreline of beautiful Lake Martin making the park an angler’s paradise. Crappie, bluegill and striped bass are just a few of the species the lake has to offer. Several fishing tournaments are scheduled at the park each year.

If you're in the mood to test your nerves of steel, journey to the "Chimney Rock" area of Lake Martin. This is one of the hidden gems of the lake. After you test your nerves of steel, take a relaxing visit to Wind Creek State Park's North Picnic Area and enjoy some swimming and fishing on beautiful Lake Martin. After a full day at Wind Creek State Park and Lake Martin, take advantage of the park's only dairy creem, Creem @ The Creek for great food and beverages.

The park’s 586 campsites are spread over 320 acres and offer ample opportunities to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. Campsites include 102-30 amp waterfront campsites, 18-30 amp sewer waterfront campsites, 211-30 amp sewer campsites, 216-30 amp base campsites. For guests who prefer to stay in a camping cabin, the park has seven camping cabins to choose from, camping cabin 2 is handicap accessible. Each air conditioned cabin has a kitchenette and a private bathroom. Guests will need to bring their own bed linens, towels, cooking and eating utensils.

The 39 premium campsite amenities include; water, sewer, 50/30/20 amp electrical, water front access, and TV service. Three of the newly renovated sites are handicap accessible. Bathhouse and playground facilities are conveniently located throughout the park.

Separate from the above campsites we have an area restricted to equestrian camping. These 20 campsites are first come first serve and all have 30 amp electrical and water service.

The place is big

But also poorly signed and the front desk is pretty unhelpful. She asked if I had been here before and I said no and yet she never explained there was a code to get in. Frustrating at best. It is a huge campground, can't imagine the number of people in the summer. Seems I drove past some wilderness areas and hikes on the way in. We won't get to explore them on this visit.

Everything is perfect. Clean campsites with power and water and fire rings, near by bait store that sells a lot more than just bait. The park rangers and staff are here help and friendly. Restrooms and showers are spotless. The views are amazing.

Very clean campground. Stroller friendly for the most part - we took many walks around! The marina store has tons of useful items that you could forget to bring along with alcohol. The waterfront view was gorgeous! We will be visiting again soon!

Beautiful Alabama lake

Stayed at Wind creek and the atmosphere was wonderful. Lots of fun trails to hike. Located right on beautiful lake Martin there's plenty of great fishing. Even has a pier to fish from. There's a great ice cream and place to get burgers by the pier too. They even have a zip line. Loved it here. Very convenient to Alexander city as well, that has a quaint downtown and a Walmart if you forgot anything. Highly recommend!

Summer in December

Camped here to ring out the old and ring in 2022 with a group of Sisters. The staff was professional and quick at check in, even inquired if I was aware of the forecasted incoming weather during my stay and explained emergency procedures. HUGE campground. All the sites are nice sized, though an update is needed on pavement, pads and amenities. They keep what they have well maintained. Tree top, mini golf and archery activities are present. Of course you are on the at one time largest man made lake so all those water activities. There are nice trails that are adequately marked. Once again updates would be nice. There is an Equine campground and a contractor for trail rides nearby if you don’t have your own horse. The area offers many small towns with antiquing and interesting local businesses/restaurants. Worth a visit for a weekend or week of your summer if you can get a reservation.

Wind Creek State Park

Great camp grounds with plenty of things to do to keep everyone entertained. I gave it 4 stars only because you have to stay here for a week to get premium sites with 50 amp service. But this area is very clean and has very spacious camp sites. We were in section E. This area was very quite and had full hook-ups at our site. The WiFi in this section was not good at all. We used our cellphones with unlimited data to stream shows at night. Verizon cell phone service can be flaky in certain areas. We will be sure to visit this park again for a weekend get away.

Great for young families

We stayed this past weekend. Luckily, we chose the E (more quiet) area because we didn’t want to stay for more than 3 days. Explored all over and saw how crowded c and b were. There are a few less crowded spots on the water but for the most part it’s very close. Good if you want your kids to play with others on the playgrounds. But not good if you want peace and quiet.

Great place to go camping!

Awesome campground. If you look at the map you’ll see that some sites are full hook-up and some are not. We stayed in C section with full hook-ups. They have playgrounds throughout the campground, trails from 1 mile long to 15 miles long that can be utilized by horse, bike, or on foot. Boat rentals include two different places. The marina for motorized jon boats and pontoon boats. You can rent these for 4-48 hours. If you’re renting one of their boats then you need a vessel license. If you don’t have a vessel licenses then you can take the test at the marina. At the Creem Shop (they sell ice cream, burgers, etc) you can rent pedal boats and canoes. They have a zip line and tree line adventure course, mini-golf, a beach area for swimming, and plenty of fishing spots. They also offer church services on Sunday morning. Check in is at 4 pm and check out is at 2 pm. Spots are close together but I’ve seen worse. Campground is clean and wasn’t noisy. We will definitely be coming back for a longer stay in the future.

One of the Best!

We really enjoyed our stay at Wind Creek. The lake is beautiful with plenty amenities. There are quite a few campsites on the lake, the rest still have lake views. Some slots are smaller than others, which is something you have to be cautious about when reserving your spot. Other than that, everything was amazing! Wind Creek is definitely a place we will return to in the near future and quite often! Check out the views from the Silo in the day use area! Amazing views of the lake!

Lakefront Serenity

This park has beautiful sites. We stayed in the premium waterfront (January 15th for 6 days, during offseason) and while there were quite a few other neighbors we felt like we had the place to ourselves. I’m sure the place is hopping during season. We kayaked, fished, hiked and the kids geocached, biked and scootered. Great cell service (my kids homeschool). The bath houses were extraordinarily clean and we saw them cleaning them at least once a day. The camp store was a little bare but had a great selection of live bait and tackle. Would definitely return again

Pretty neat place

I say this because we got here 1 November and it was half full. This is a very LARGE campground, it would be very busy if it were packed. The gate coming in is very very tight, and easy to miss. The only sign directs to the park (not the campground), follow. Our neighbor waited months to get a water front spot, we booked the day before. Absolutely beautiful, great water front spots if you want to pay the price (with discount and fees, waterfront ended up $60 a night). Very family friendly and lots to do when everything is open. Def worth checking out!

Words can’t describe

This place was awful. We pulled into our “camping spot” and pulled right back out. It was packed in like sardines and even if we were not in a pandemic, it was too crowded. Not exactly camping. It’s just a spot on a over crowded lake to park you’re RV. Do not expect to tent camp here. The staff was super helpful and very polite though, which is why I am not giving it one star.

Love this campground/ Park.

We have been here multiple time with the latest visit being 4/2020. We have stayed in most sections at least once. Site are mostly level. Some are tight to back into but doable. Some sites and FHU and some lack sewer. They show movies on weekend nights outdoors by the main playground. The playgrounds must be the best because I see children out there at 7am until way after dark. When it's open anyway. Was closed on last visit. Fishing pier, zip line, hiking trails and water related stuff. Many sites are on the water but they book many months in advance during warm weather. Boat launches and docks around in different locations for campers to use.

The bath house in the premium section is closed due to storm damage. They fill propane and sell firewood. Marina in the park area.

We will visit again.

Great all around campground

This is one of the largest state run campgrounds with over 500 sites. We stayed at site 100 it was an excellent site right on the water next to us was like a private beach. This is the only public access to Lake Martin. Large lake for swimming, boating, fishing. Sites are very open to each other but a lot of shade. Bathhouses are large and very well taken care of but I did not have any hot water at the time. Bathhouse was also a bit of a hike from site but had parking area so we drove over there and included a nice laundry facility. Several hiking trails fishing and other outdoor activities at this park. Cabins are available and premium campsites that have 50 amp service, water, sewer, cable and waterfront access. This park is close to stores and restaurants within a 20 minute drive. This campground definitely has a lot of amenities.

Best first camping trip ever

We booked last minute hoping to squeeze in a camping trip, our 2yo first camping trip. We haven’t been camping in years but instantly impressed by this park. Very well maintained. Some of the nicest bath houses I’ve ever been in. Clean, ac and working.

We stayed at c99 which was a perfect spot for tents and kids. We were on a wedge between a water cove the bathrooms and the playground. Perfect location. The kids would play at the water, feeding fish or ducks and the adults would do the chores they needed too. The donut truck also shows up at the playground every morning. The big beach is a little walk (2-3blocks) but it’s worth it! There is a snack shack with pizza sandwiches burgers and ice cream, a zip line and the silo tower to explore.

The playground is practically brand new and huge. All the kids loved this. There is put put, kona ice and boat rentals.

The park seemed like it was at 90% capacity but you wouldn’t know it. It felt like a handful of people were at the beach and the playground, etc.

Definitely will be back soon.
